Vote for Our Official Top 20

Yes, I do this always at the beginning of the new year. And I intent to do so soon.

Maybe some more members will use the great Lockdown months for a new list before the update?

There are also some of our longtime members which haven’t updated their lists for a zillion years. Scherp for example, or our chief Seb … now’s the chance …

That was my old Top 20. The new version follows (with directors and good enough music composers stated) :

This is my actual Top 20:

    1. Once Upon a Time in the West
    1. The Good, the Bad, the Ugly
    1. The Mercenary
    1. The Great Silence
    1. My Name is Nobody
    1. El Puro
    1. Cemetery Without Crosses
    1. A Fistful of Dollars
    1. For a Few Dollars More
    1. Companeros
    1. Django
    1. Boot Hill
    1. The Last Killer
    1. Duel in the Eclipse
    1. Blindman
    1. God Forgives…I Don’t
    1. Duck, You Sucker! / A Fistful of Dynamite
    1. Matalo!
    1. Hate Is My God
    1. A Minute to Pray, A Second to Die

The films in each group are very close, and I could swap them around easily. And the next which are outside the top 20 are also very close to the ones which are in, but these are the ones I think are at the moment the most fun to watch.

20 Spags for a better world …

Btw the voting started 15 years ago in Jan 2006, so it is small jubilee now.

Looking forward to the next 85 years and the 100th birthday …

And this is the most deviating list, the one the most different from the forum taste:

Quite interesting …

Only one from the forum’s top 20, only 3 from the top 60.

@stanton had put a revolver to my head and forced me to reconsider, so I shall attempt an upgrade of my list as follows:

The previous 15. is out, sorry Giulio, its place takes (new) Tepepa
The previous 11. is out, sorry Sergio, its place takes 16.
New 16: Anda Muchacho Spara
The previous 19. switches with 14.
The number 8. and 13. trade places
And the previous 20. is out, sorry Sergio (this is a tough one that I might regret after a way overdue rewatch of the film, but hell, we need to make tough choices), and its place goes (new) Death Rides a Horse.
And then I did some more thinkging and I need to demote Companeros to 18, and I kick Keoma (sorry bearded man), and put in a surprise title that has really grown on me and will surely cause some controversy

Which makes the new list as follows

  1. Once Upon A time in the West
  2. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
  3. For a Few Dollars More
  4. The Great Silence
  5. The Big Gundown
  6. Il Mercenario
  7. Django
  8. A Bullet for the General
  9. A Man Called Sledge
  10. God Forgives, We don’t
  11. Cemetery without Crosses
  12. Run Man, Run
  13. A Fistful of Dollars
  14. Forgotten Pistolero
  15. Tepepa
  16. Anda Muchacho Spara aka At the End of the Rainbow
  17. Texas Adios
  18. Companeros
  19. And God said to Cain
  20. Death Rides a Horse

Yes, interesting. The only ones that I really don’t like are the atrocious His Colt Himself His Revenge, Django and Sartana are Coming and to a lesser extent Law of Violence.

Making a comparison even Austrian forumer Viva Matalo’s list (that I remembered as the strangest, probably because it included as number 14 none other than Halleluja and Sartana Strike Again!) seems fairly ‘‘normal’’.

Good one, Sledge is part of my Alternative Top 20.

Just checked, and yes, that list was also pretty spectacular …

I like Sledge very much, not sure if I would categorize it as a spaghie though. It’s more along the lines of a very successful hybrid, that’s why it’s not in my Alternative Top 20 after all.

I guess it just lacks a handful more Italian names in the credits, but otherwise…

Unlike most other westerns directed by US directors in Europe I think Sledge is closer to the SW than to the US stuff.
At least for this one I never questioned its Spaggie status. Also for Five Men Army.

Both are Italian productions or co-productions so no question for me either.

But I think there are some which were co-produced by Italians, which are doubtless no Spags for me. Especially not Chino (J. Sturges) or China 9 (M. Hellman), but I would have no problem to view 3 Bullets for a Long Gun as one, so much spagiesque is that one.

And Red Sun, the total Euro-Western, it’s in the list, but it is still not a real SW for me.

Which of course we still disagree on.

Of course …

After hard years of reshuffling and rearranging, handwringing and hairsplitting, invoking all the gods and goddesses of the Occident and Orient, pleading for illumination, I have finally managed to compile this list. As ever, San Procrastinato was of no help to me.

  1. Sergio Leone, C’era una volta il West, 1968

  2. Sergio Leone, Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo, 1966

  3. Sergio Leone, Giù la testa, 1971

  4. Sergio Leone, Per qualche dollaro in più, 1965

  5. Sergio Leone, Per un pugno di dollari, 1964

  6. Damiano Damiani, ¿Quién sabe?, 1966

  7. Sergio Corbucci, Il grande silenzio, 1968

  8. Sergio Corbucci, Django, 1966

  9. Giulio Petroni, Tepepa, 1969

  10. Sergio Corbucci, Il mercenario, 1968

  11. Giuseppe Colizzi, Dio perdona … io no!, 1967

  12. Sergio Corbucci, Navajo Joe, 1966

  13. Sergio Corbucci, I crudeli, 1967

  14. Sergio Corbucci, Che c’entriamo noi con la rivoluzione?, 1972

  15. Sergio Corbucci, Gli specialisti, 1969

  16. Sergio Corbucci, Vamos a matar, compañeros, 1970

  17. Carlo Lizzani, Requiescant, 1967

  18. Eugenio Martín, El precio de un hombre, 1966

  19. Sergio Sollima, La resa dei conti, 1967

  20. Giulio Questi, Se sei vivo spara, 1967

Ok then, after some hesitation, the 15 years of voting update.
191 lists now, one worse than the other, but all guaranteed lordoftherings-free, and when we reach the 200, it will be one of the great achievements of mankind.

What happened since the last update in the top 20?

Finally Run Man Run fell out (for now) of the top 20, probably for the first time since the voting started.

Apart from that FoD lost one place in favor of Django, as did My Name Is Nobody, which is now behind The Return of Ringo.

New in the top 50 is Dead Men Ride, for the first time. Quite interesting as this one did not get a single vote before 2010.
And The Ruthless Four is instead now out.
