Remember reading that myself.
Would like a few titles here and there that have never had a dvd release any where in the world to get released by Wild East.

That just sounds weird to me, because most of their releases (except maybe at least for some the couple early crap looking stuff that wasnāt really available anywhere else at the time I think) seem to be either direct copies of other DVD releases or they used the exact same material the other DVD companies used.
Of course it is possible, but why would they do it differently this one time? If they paid MGM, MGM would surely provide a print⦠and if its PD (or they think its PD
) why not do like most PD releases out there are done, copy another release.
Might not be possible. Regardless if they generally pay for the films or not. Like it or not WE to me seems to depend on the other (well mostly it has been region 2ā¦) region releases and sales.
Restoration of the films cost money and the companies owning the rights and prints need to get their money back and make some profit when they sell the rights (and I have no doubt they want to make lots of profit
). Since it is so easy nowadays to make a perfect copy and maybe add a different language audio track or subtitles, releasing the film in one country will mean it can then easily be available in every damn country (And the internetā¦) as a bootleg copy eating away at the potential sales it had as an official release.
I simply doubt WE with their ~1000 discs is nowhere near what would be expected if that were the first release of the movie (and in English!) anywhere and no other release were yet in sight.
The Swedish company Fin de Siecle that has released a couple of Italian spy movies and other stuff apparently wasnāt able to buy rights for spaghetti westerns or crime movies because Sweden is a too small market. They would have released them with English tracks. But I would say Sweden is too small only because people generally donāt buy foreign or different region releases. If every person who wants to see these films on DVD would buy them (as long as a right audio/subtitle option is provided) regardless of the country/region it was released in, Iām certain we would have much more films out in English audio because what would it matter where it was released as long as everyone buys it regardless (of course that will never happenā¦).
Now we just get them mostly as bootlegs with crap VHS audio.
As a rule, all DVD and BR distributors, from Wild East to Gaumont to Televista, should issue each and every DVD and Blu-ray with an English language dub and or an English subtitle option. No matter how limited the market in whichever country, an English option expands the marketability considerably. I would buy a lot more discs from Italy and France if they had English options. I stress the word options; no need to replace the inherent or preferred language. Itās a relatively inexpensive thing to do. The fact that DVD and BR distributors donāt do this mystifies me to no end.

Iām watching Tequila Joe right now and the picture quality looks pretty good to meā¦

Yeah preach on brother.
What drove me crazy in the past was that even some of the Koch stuff was not english friendly with their special features. It canāt be that hard or costly to add subs right?
wild east must be taken from a very good print
just wonderin when dvdempire will have in stock the DEATH RIDES A HORSE dvd from wild east?

According to a Koch member it is
Otherwise they would do it
Give a few dvdās or something to a fan who does fansubs to do the subs, fairly cheap option there.
But the problems isnāt so much getting the subs done as far as I recall. When Koch buys the rights they buy the rights for the German-speaking countries, that is, they are not allowed to make the releases any more edible to the English-speaking part of the world. Thatās why the English siubs that has been on those disc have been hidden away and not mentioned anywhere.
The same reason Fin De Siecle put hard-burned Swedish subs on their releases. Not because they wanted to but because they had to to scare away people
In the end we of course shouldnāt be frightened off because of hard-burned subs or extras without subs. It is very minor issues. The movie is the most important part, I rarely take the time to watch the extras.
Used to watch alot of extraās, but find myself not bothering with many these days.
Yes Iām waiting for that too.
You have to pay copyrights to everything, Stanton is correct, the cost is not in the making of the subs, but companies like koch buy the rights in order to sell a film in a country with a determined language/subs (Germany in the specific case), if you buy for a worldwide distribution (with multisubs) those rights are pretty much more expensive, this is even more important in countries that use language dubbed versions, which is not the case of Portugal we prefer original language and subtitles.
Copyrights are a pretty complicated issue and they can be wherever you expected the less, for instance I colaborated in a Portuguese clothes company that selled long-sleeve shirts with several country flags in its design (In Portugal everyone knows what Iām talking about), and they had to pay copyrights (and it wasnāt so little) to those countries
Why not just buy direct from WE?
It might be different with DRAH since it is differently priced than what the discs normally are but DVDEmpire usually sells them cheaper. The discs that used to be $19.95 (but are now 21.72?!) at WE store are under $16 at DVDEmpire.
Donāt know if this is the reason for DVDEmpire preference of these two gentlemen though.
Yeah I quess the new pricing on the site has to do with pay pal. But when I ordered DRAH from 'em, the site said it would be like 10.75 or something to pre order but when I got to the pay pal part I was only charged 9.99. I was charged the same price I paid to pre order It Can Be Done Amigo and that was way before the change.
Just ignore that, theyāre still $19.95 at the checkout. Theyāll probably fix it soon.
Will give DVDEmpire a try next time as their prices appeal to my good nature.
They certainly do
If you actually bothered to buy a WE you wuld notice that the prices are the same (19.99) as they have been despite the two two dollar increase.
DRAH looks better than XXX and has better audio. You can actually tell what is going on in the dark scenes.
