Vote for Our Official Top 20

OK, there are probably several left to reach a revised Top 20 for me, but the big problem is I want to avoid buying candidates that fail, so to watch them at Youtube before buying is a fair solution if they are to be found there. But I will only do that if they have been released in English on official DVD/Blurays of good quality and my impression is that is not so often the case with the remainder or at least as my latest new candidates imply.

Regarding your 71 ranking of Ramon The Mexican I can (I guess) probably (I don’t remember your Top 20 of course) pick out several right now of your high ranked picks that I don’t like, so maybe your ranking in this case mostly reflects our different tastes. I know that I rank it higher than many of the essential Top 20 on this web site which I in many cases don’t like at all. I believe my ranking of it reflects my special tastes and few others here probably rank it as high more due to the different tastes and not that they have found several better that also I would like.

My emphasis is probably on 1. (dark) mood, 2. music, 3. scenery and I want to avoid too lighthearted stuff (except for My Name Is Nobody) or full of (for me boring) fist fights or with much civil war themes or with much mexican revolutionary themes.

Not?
And if not, then, according to whom else?

Fair enough. My point was just that there are some films outside the top 100 that are well worth searching out.

I think not? The forum never had a vote or a poll for a top 100 as far as I know. If it had, I’m certain that some films outside the top 100 would be whithin, and some whithin outside.

Search me.

The issue is that since the beginning we’ve had a somewhat ‘Zapato-centric’ Essential Top 20: in my opinion, to ensure a greater degree of homogeneity and for the benefit of newcomers, revolution westerns and SW comedies should have separate Top 6 lists using the old F1 points scoring system 9-6-4-3-2-1. That could be a breath of fresh air, what do you all think?

Yes of course.

Even if we have now about 175 lists, it is still a subjective thing, and tastes are pretty different. The list gives one an idea which films are most liked by SW fans, and which not that much. The list does not represent a truth, but with that amount of contributions it has at least something to say.

But still most here will dislike some of the higher ranked films, and will love some of the outsiders wondering why most others don’t do. And nobody who is new to the genre should get the feeling that he must like those which are inside the Top 20. The list only says that it is more likely that one will like a higher ranked film, cause a majority already does. Well, whatever …

Yes, such a list would be different, but I think all in all not that much. with so many contributions the list is quite reliable for the first 50, but then becomes more and more random, but still not arbitrary for the next 50.

But to get a representative top 100 , or say top 50, you have to find enough people who are willing to contribute, and which have watched at least 200 or better 300 Spags. Who have seen at least every Spag of some importance. And I think you need for such a voting about 50 contributors to get a list which is more telling than our current top 20.

Well, we discussed such a voting about 10 years ago, but we never did it. Fell free to start one, and than look if you get enough lists.

Positions are indeed pretty entrenched, but that actually was the idea of such a voting.

And I don’t like the idea of excluding films.

To exclude comedies would be an idea, because comedies are a different kind of film, but there are many films which are nor pure comedies, and then we had to discuss which films are enough comedy to be excluded, and which are still more dramatic films and should stay. That would be a discussion which leads nowhere. And even in the Zapata section you will find films which only have a few of the Zapata elements.

In the comedy section for me the Trinity films are more a comedy than a western, and I personally don’t vote for them in a SW list (but everybody else is allowed to vote for them), but other films like They Call Me Hallelujah or Last Train to Durango are for me, despite some comedy elements, at first westerns, and I consider them for my voting.

I agree with you for the most.

A new top 50 would imo probably be a waste of time, as it will be more or less like the top 50 we already have.

To try to finetune the next 50 I think that would be of little added value, as the ranking here, as you say, becomes more and more random (and at the bottom of the top 100, downright arbitrary, in my opinion) and a poll would not change that much.

Did you by the way at any point rank the top 100 by votes cast instead of points?

Of course, I think for the first 50 the current voting is precise enough. But for the next 50 a top 50, especially if only made by people who have watched all (or at least nearly all) the films which are of any importance, could be interesting. But actually I expect such new voting also not very different from the one we have.

And remember, the top 20 was not created to get a top 100, but basically to get that top 20, and for that it is more precise than any other SW voting ever done. (feel free to disagree  )

Thanks, it should be a list to examine to find new candidates for a collection, but no Ramon The Mexican implies it is not “complete”

I guess the number to the far right only reflects how many voting fans included that movie on his Top 20, right ?

Yes, first the points, than the votes.

Their was once one vote for Ramon the Mexican, but that was one of the early lists which I have deleted meanwhile.

I have that film on my revised Top 20 from June 9 above. Place 15. You may include it if you like.

I think this list is good and accurate. The 3 Sergios dominate with all rights. It hits me though that there’s some movies in the top 40 that needs a proper Blu-ray release. Hopefully some labels uses this list for future releases.

Oh yes, I haven’t included some of the more recent lists yet, but will do before the next update of the main list.

Starting from above of the Top 210, I have found another candidate (for a possible 7 out of 10) Death Sentence ranked 45, 44. Obviously no English dub DVD or Bluray exist but the forum thread on that film sounds promising anyhow. I will consider buying the release with Italian audio and English subtitles.

Since we had a similar discussion two years ago, I have for the first time scrolled through and (mostly) read the first two years of this thread. It has convinced me (overwhelmingly) that we should stick to the the Essential top 20 as it turned out then after two years of discussions. You have The Colossus Of Rhodes, Chichén Itzá, The SWDB Essential top 20 Films and some other things that shouldn’t be tampered with.

As for fresh air, how about a one time poll for the top 20 hardcore low budget spaghs not made by any of the three Sergios, also leaving out the other Zapats and the comedies, only the gritty stuff outside the official top 20, and using Phil’s restrictive definition of what films are eligible?

Considered separately doesn’t mean excluded…

It’s not so difficult, you keep on the main list A Sky Full Of Stars For A Roof, Ben and Charlie, Nobody, They Call Me Hallelujah and His Name Was Holy Ghost (many deaths and/or violent scenes), maybe Bad’s Man River and A Train for Durango. All the others, and we are talking about approximately 45 movies, would be eligible for the Top 6.

And as for Revolution westerns, once they are considered separately films set in Central-Southern America like Le goût de la violence and O’ Cangaceiro could be regarded without any problem as fully eligible.

Okay, I’m jumping in:

  1. The Good, The Bad And The Ugly
  2. Once Upon A Time In The West
  3. My Name Is Nobody
  4. For A Few Dollars More
  5. The Big Gundown
  6. Companeros
  7. The Great Silence
  8. Death Rides A Horse
  9. A Fistful Of Dollars
  10. Duck You Sucker
  11. And God Said To Cain

Humm I’ve to update my top 20 list

I still don’t see the benefits of excluding the Zapatas, they are a very important part of the genre. Actually I don’t see any advantage in excluding any film which could be considered a Spag. And if in doubt I prefer to keep them, than to skip them.

Ok, as I said, the comedies are indeed somehow different, but then, using your definition (which is mine too) there are only the 2 Trinitys in the top 100 (or did I forget another one?), and the best being Trinity Is Still My Name only at #50, and there are not very much more pure comedies in the complete list. Taking them out of the voting would change more or less nothing for the complete list.

I will skip by and by some of the older lists, those of members long gone, those who will not be changed any more by new releases of little known Spags in good quality.

I would like to have 200 lists, but new lists arrive only in small numbers, and if I skip now too much older ones we will never reach that 200. Not that reaching 200 is really important, but it sounds good …
