Nothing about OUATITW feels like a US western to me, all the production crew and producers seem to be Italian and being shot without sound makes it feel 100% authentic SW

At this stage we all know what a Spaghetti or Euro western is, and why they are slightly disrespectfully tagged this way.
Tarantino’s ‘westerns’ are no more ‘Spaghetti’ than ‘Dirty Harry’ is a French film noir - Personally I’m loathed to even class ‘Django Unchained’ or ‘The Hateful Eight’ as westerns at all.
They are to me very expensive self indulgent home movies, which reference exploitation and so called grindhouse flicks. Taking lots of bits and pieces of other films and adding ultra violent, supposed shocking moments is neither entertaining nor is it creative or original. Quentin has all the creative control and money needed to produce anything he wishes … but he’s still stuck in this adolescent movie nerd’s wet dream.
As fans of westerns and Euro westerns in particular, we’re pretty much starved of anything that can even begin to hold it’s own against Leone’s vision. He took an exhausted and jaded genre and did something amazingly exciting with it. Tarantino may have ‘borrowed’ some stylistic touches from various directors, but his work is contrived and unoriginal.
What bothers me most about claims that Tarantino has reinvented the western or made a spaghetti western, is that whatever he enjoys about the genre, his version suggests that he doesn’t get what makes these movies tick … His characters all talk and talk and talk in the same voice … his voice. The great silence, he is not!

QT is one of the most original directors of the last 25 years, and he made some of the best films in that time span. Unfortunately his 2 westerns don’t belong to that masterpiece category. They are both good films, but they are disappointing compared to Pulp Fiction or Inglourious Basterds.
I only can hope that he returns to form with his next film.

Ha, ha…nearly posted something to this effect the other day.
The big thing for me re his westerns is just all that talking ! Most of my favourite westerns have far less talking. And sometimes with all that talking going on in QT westerns I do forget they our westerns.

Well, we have been through Uncle Quentin’s flicks many times on this forum, why not one more time. Personally, I observed decline in quality in Inglorious bastards and Death Proof, so i didn’t expect much from Django. Which was surprisingly great to the point of Candyland massacre, and then QT has thrown in 25 minutes or so of absolutely unnecessary material. So again, I was expecting from H8 something similar. But, it turned out as one of his best movies, so, go figure. Decline in quality or not, I can’t say that I don’t like any movie he made, some of them good, others great.
Btw, i’m always surprised how many people on this site dislike his movies, i would actually expect the opposite.
His movies make me want to just watch the movies he’s constantly referencing instead

Well, anyway, I wonder, how the spag fandom and this thread especially is going to sort out Django Lives! German director, US writer, Italian actor, obviously, and it is confirmed follow up to Corbucci’s film. Although, that story about Django being a Wild West cinema consultant, well, we’ll see…

My top 20 has changed somewhat since I joined the Forum, but last time I posted it I thought it was solid. But no, still one loose thread. As for the nineteen first I’m fine. The great Sergios are there, the great Zapatas are there (and I count The Wind’s Anger as one of them), and the other great hardcore spags are there. But as for number twenty, Sonora, it seems I might as well have chosen one out of three other films (I Want Him Dead, The Crows Will Dig Your Grave or Boot Hill). So I have asked myself, is there one of those which stand out in the sense that it is, at its best, an outstanding and perfect spag in a way that the others are not? And in fact I think there is. So I should like to make one last change to my list as follows:

I’m just updating the forum’s Top 20. The whole thing started in Jan 2006, so this is the 13th year of voting now. Hopefully without black cats meeeoowing on Fridays under ladders … whatever … some applause please for the nearly 200 voters which contributed since then. Actually still 170 lists are counted.
Only 4 new lists since last April, but I kicked a few older ones out, only ones from the first year, and only incomplete lists with 12 or 13 entries, and one which was not in order.
Gone are lists by the following long forgotten members:
Wolf; Guerilla; Lanky Gunman; Johnny Exhale; Old West Action; Samuryan; Nobody; Twice a Judas
Maybe some of them have returned meanwhile with a new account, who knows, and btw Samuryan was the first one who did (for a few weeks) the calculating of the list, before he lost interest and I took over.
In the future I will by and by kick some other of the older lists out, starting with those compiled by forumistas who haven’t visited the forum in the last 10 years.

The changes due to the erased lists are mainly happening amongst the first 20 films. The points in Red are the ones which lost points. You can open the table, which shows the first 70 films, by clicking on the bottom.
The only one beneath # 70 which lost points was Ramon the Mexican on #152, which sadly lost all of its stunningly 11 points.
I haven’t had to rejig the Alt Top 20 for a while in terms of what films qualify or not.
With the drop of Run Man, Run that looks like changing very soon now.
Yes, older lists have often voted for the usual suspects, and Run Man Run was already losing ground in the last years. Also FoD and Django will most likely soon be passed by The Big Gundown (also Trump’s fault?). And Death Rides a Horse had lost # 10 to Face to Face before I deleted the old lists. Also Return of Ringo climbed by that one rank up.
So at least, there is again some movement amongst the top 20.
