My List.
In no particular order.
Klaus Kinski
Lee Van Cleef
Eli Wallach
Franco Nero
Jack Palance
Clint Eastwood
Richard Harrison
Tomas Milian
Anthony Steffen
Gianni Garko
A very fine List Cactus !!
It has many greats that are also in my TOP 10/TOP 20 SW LEADING MEN.
I did a separate Top 10 for SW supporting actors. KLAUS KINSKI is near the top !
If I was locked in a room with HELGA LINE and ROSALBA NERI :-* :-*
Then I would NOT be too quick in looking for the key… :o
Them and Ms Cardinale and i would want someone to permanently lose the key.
To qualify for my list the actor had to have appeared in at least 4 spaghettis in a major role and given consistantly memorable and enjoyable performances. (Therefore, no Clint or Eli as much as I like them both) It was then weighted by volume; both of great performances and great films they were involved in. By that criteria, Milian wins hands down and Gemma is a creditable second. Nero runs a very close third.
(Kinski was given some leeway on the ‘major role’ angle as even his five minute appearances often seem major to me)
I have reviewed three Gemma westerns recently (UNA PISTOLA PER RINGO, UN DOLLARO BUCATO, ADIOS GRINGO), hope to add one this weekend and do some others into the near future
So, no, I don’t think Gemma has anything to complain
I was not crazy about Gemma at first because he wasn’t as he didn’t seem as “tough” as some of the others but over time I have grown to really appreciate him. I find him to be the most “legit” of all the SW stars because he does his own stunts and his horse riding and gun twirling skills are second to none. I have him ranked number 6 now.
I like the fact that Gemma isn’t the scruffy hardened face anti-hero like Van Cleef or Eastwood. I like having some variety in the appearances of leads. When they start looking the same it becomes a parody of itself.
