I just have some time on my hands so I’m doing a little rankings list, perhaps we can add more lists and do a vote like we did for the top 20 SW’s.
Off the top of my head, here it goes…
Lee Van Cleef
Clint Eastwood
Gianni Garko
Franco Nero
Anthony Steffen
Giuliano Gemma
William Berger
Peter Lee Lawrence
Terence Hill
Henry Fonda
John Wayne (hahaha just kidding, just making sure you are still paying attention)
Honourable Mention: George Hilton, G.M. Volonte, Charles Bronson, Klaus Kinski, Ivan Rassimov, Woody Strode, Craig Hill, Tony Anthony, Eli Wallach, George Martin
I intentionally left out folks like Eli Wallach, Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, and so on…because I don’t think of them specifically as Spaghetti Western actors.
I tried to make up my list using only actors that were more closely associated with the genre.
Characters would probably be an even better idea than actors.
Its hard to classify actors, I was also faced with a delemna of whether I should incllude mainstream guys like Fonda, in the end I chose to because the impact they made with 1 or 2 films surpassed others that have starred in many SW’s. I guess its the quality over quantity arguement. But yeah guys like Fonda and Bronson were not SW actors per se. They were just hollywood actors that happened to be in a couple of SW’s. Same goes for Orson Wells, Coburn, Teddy Savales, Burt Reynolds and others etc…
I wonder if people consider Lionel Stander to be a true SW actor. …
Bad Lieutenant, what do you think about Harvey Keitel in a spaghettiwestern?
Here is a picture from “The Piano”
He was great in Mean Streets, Reservoir Dogs and Bad Lieutenant. I haven’t seen Il mio west though, so I can’t judge.
You mean The Man With No Name?
The Stranger would be Tony Anthony ;)
Same difference. Anthony’s character was of course based on Eastwood’s.
SW ACTORS
01 Tomas Milian (the most extrovert)
02 Franco Nero (the coolest)
03 Lee Van Cleef (“the daddy”)
04 Terence Hill (the fastest)
05 Guiliano Gemma (the nicest)
06 Gian Maria Volonte (the wildest)
07 Gianni Garko (the most stylish)
08 Charles Bronson (because he’s “Harmonica” the greatest SW character ever created)
09 Henry Silva (the most outrageous)
10 Clint Eastwood (the most imitated)
From Gunslinger's Revenge (1998) - A Review by David Nusair
“Starring Harvey Keitel and David Bowie, Gunslinger’s Revenge casts Keitel as Johnny Lowen - an aging gunfighter who returns home with the intention of hanging up his six-shooter for good. And though it initially seems as though Johnny will be able to enjoy his retirement with his son (Leonardo Pieraccioni) and grandson (Yudii Mercredi), it’s not long before the sinister Jack Sikora (Bowie) arrives on the scene looking to settle an old score.”
