The Last Western You Watched?

Yesterday (May 31) was the great Clint Eastwood’s Birthday, so to celebrate I spent the day watching some of his best films:

“Hang 'Em High”
"Two Mules For Sister Sara"
and the greatest Spaghetti films of them all:

“A Fistful Of Dollars”
“For A Few Dollars More”
“The Good The Bad and The Ugly”

My God! 5 films in one day! Did you see any daylight at all?

Wow, no kidding!!! You get the Ironbutt Recliner award ;D

I watched Sabata today…always a classic. LVC rules!!!

THe man from laramie, a stewart/mann western…and a episode of bonanza with lee van cleef “blood ties” i think it was called.

I watched on Fidani again: Four Came to Kill Sartana
-First half of the movie is very boring, usual Fidani stuff with bandits just riding around but latter half gets better and there’s a few very good scenes too, the duel in the end for example. And Fidani himself plays a little part in it too.

Daylight? What is this thing you call daylight?
It was a bit of a long day, but worth it.

Alejandro Jodorowsky: El Topo
-One of the best films ever, perfect!

‘Treasure of Silver Lake’

 • nice little Eurowestern shot in former Yugoslavia
 • first appearance on screen by Winnetou

watched A FISTFUL OF DYNAMITE last night, got the new German steelbook edition.
watched A FISTFUL OF DYNAMITE last night, got the new German steelbook edition.
One of my favourite films and definite TOP 10 material. Does this German “Steelbook” edition of the DVD have the horse falls not present on the UK 2 disc DVD (is it the same as the deleted German “Gold” edition)? Cheers

It certainly does ;D

It is the same as the previous edition just in a steelbook.

Apart from watching “Catlow” on TCM ealier this evening (mentioned elsewhere), i sat down the other day and watched “Lo Voglio Morto” (for the second time recently), which i really enjoy. It’s pretty grim, which is preferable for me, and Craig Hill had the right look and manner for this kind of film. Also nice to see so many familiar faces in there, (just a pity Federico Boido didn’t get much to do). The only thing that got me about the film was the sheer amount of times the various villains got the drop on Hill’s character so easily! Very, very nice soundtrack …i was impressed enough to order it the day after i first watched the film.

Second up was “The Hills Run Red”. I’d wanted to see it for ages, and liked it a lot. I’ve always liked Henry Silva and he didn’t disappoint. (though disturbingly i found that laugh of his pretty infectious). As for Thomas Hunter…his character was a bit strange…well, deranged might be a better word for it. his performance was a bit over the top at times but i guess i’d be a bit mental after the weird treatment he got in that prison, and the discovery of his wife’s death/friends’ betrayal etc. The only other thing i’ve ever seen him in was “Death Walks in Laredo”, which, while enjoyable, was pretty bizarre. One thing puzzled me though. Is this a cut version? Because past reviews i have read mention a “gruesome” scene where Hunter’s tattoo is cut from his arm, but in this version you really didn’t see anything, and it did seem as though the scene might have been longer…

Thirdly i watched another film with Craig Hill, “Seven Pistols For A Massacre”/“Adios Hombre” (as Das Todeslied). It was German audio only but very easy to follow. Unfortunately the quality was pretty poor and it seemed to have been taken from an old, slightly damaged videotape. Overall i enjoyed it. It rattled along at a fair pace, and Eduardo Fajardo was in fine cackling form as the main villain. There was a very strange comedy bar room brawl, featuring men AND women, with people biting legs and all sorts of stuff that seemed slightly out of place in an otherwise played straight film, but all in all a pretty entertaining (if lazy) afternoon…

Hmmm…forgot to mention that the day before, i sat through “NO Room To Die” (desperately trying to clear up a big backlog of films that need watching!). Again i enjoyed it. (LOL…i seem to be liking every film i see at the moment). I was kind of disappointed that William Berger was revealed as a villain, (though it wasn’t really much of a surprise), as he was the best thing about the film and played an intriguing character, but at least he did make it to the end of the film!

Watched Little Rita nel West a couple of days ago. Once more a spaghetti western which is far better than its reputation. Sure there’s some spontanous singing which I absolutely loathe, but apart from that it is fair story. Sure enjoyed Rita meeting both Ringo and Django. Apart from the tunes the soundtrack is also great by the way. Definitely recommended. Watched the Italian dvd release of the movie which has a fine picture quality.

Yesterday I watched California for the first time. Absolutely smashing great. Perhaps Giuliano Gemma’s best performance (will have to watch Return of Ringo again to be sure). A fantastic soundtrack and a fantastic movie. Top 20 material no doubt about it.

I watched ‘They Call Me Trinity’ last night. I know a lot of people don’t like the Trinity films but I’ve always enjoyed them (the real ones, not the rip offs without Hill and Spencer) and in comparrison with other “comedy” spaghetti westerns they are bloody masterpieces. What is more, they are one of the few spaghettis I can watch with my kids. I like to watch films with the family whenever I can and my 12 year old daughter really enjoyed this one. Good value.

I totally agree ! ‘California’ is among my top 20 SW !!!

Well with all these good comments about California, I think it is about time I got round to watching the film for the first time!

‘Silverado’ - nothing special, but an ok enjoyable movie, the atosphere might have been better in this one i think

I continued watching more Fidani, this time it was Django and Sartana… Showdown in the West.
