The Last Western You Watched?

I have started watching Robert Wise’s Tribute to a Bad Man with James Cagney. Solid stuff, with a young Lee Van Cleef in the supporting cast.

Just watched Johnny Yuma. Not great but enjoyed it immensely.

Peckinpah: Wild Bunch

Zehetgruber: The Tall Womenhttp://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Frauen,_die_durch_die_Hölle_gehen

Arriva Sabata
Not a bad film at all.

Sevimli Haydut
My second Turkish Western. Hehe. I enjoy these Turkish ones. And the guy who plays the main role looks exactly like Robert Woods!

Yeah he did.
And with Blood on the Moon also a very good and gritty western. Another b/w western which is also worth a look is Two Flags West.

To be fair, The Sound of Music is a very good film for its type. Whether someone likes musicals or not will probably sway their opinion as to its merits but in the genre of musical films it is one of the best.

The Sound of Music is in my Top 30, and will probably always be

It’s a film that not only is very good for its type, it’s a very good film tout court: very well directed, very well acted, good songs. I’ve seen it more than ten times, and it never let me down. Along with Blood on the Moon Wise’s best film. Nothing wrong with most of his other movies, btw

I have never seen The Sound of Music.

It’s not very popular here in Germany, and it is never shown on TV.

The Sound of Music is one I do not mind.

Christopher Plummer is a fine actor and has been nominated for an Oscar this year.

He plays Tolstoy, right?

A film I certainly want to see. As you say Plummer is a very fine actor, and Tolstoy was an interesting character.
Helen Mirren is in the movie too, if I’m not mistaken. Not a bad actress either

A terrible Movie but it’s helpful for the tourism in Austria. Strange but it’s quite unknown in Austria and never shown on TV.

Christopher Plummer is a fine actor and he should get the little golden Oscar.

Yes thats correct. One I want to see aswell.

Yep, he is a good director who started out as an editor for Welles. I enjoyed his The Sound of Music but my favorite film by him is The Day The Earth Stood Still.

West Side Story:
Great dancing scenes, the rest is a forgettable melodrama.

Wise had apart from good films also made his share of stale Hollywood blockbusters.

i suppose you’re refering to films like " Star Trek, The Motion Picture" and " Helen Of Troy" and " Star" and no argument there but i think " The Sand Pebbles" along with " The Haunting" and " The Body Snatcher" are his best films, stanton.

Truth is, I think that The Sand Pebbles is also a bit overblown Hollywood mainstream cinema.

From his 60s and 70s output I only really like his smaller films The Haunting and The Andromeda Strain. But The Hindenburg is also not bad for this kind of films.

Audrey Rose is a mediocre horror film, otherwise all his Horror films are very good.

Compared to other Hollywood directors he was a “realist”, and therefore worked best with smaller budgets and in b/w. But some of his older films have also slightly stiff and pretentious dialogues, like Executive Suite, an all-star film, or even a good one like Odds Against Tomorrow.

Generally an interesting director.

The Body Snatcher is a horrible film. Extremely boring, offering only a tiny bit of excitement in the end. Not much body snatching going on, a whole lot of talking though, and the main plot device is a pathetic little girl that can´t walk. 2,5/10 for the fact it has Karloff and Lugosi, and it’s only 73 minutes long.

I finished off Tribute to a Bad Man today. An all round good film, with Cagney clearly enjoying himself playing a complete bastard.
