Another Randolph Scott western has been watched this time it was “Buchanan rides alone”.
7/10.
I’m (re)watching the BB westerns (no, not all westerns with Brigitte Bardot) too
Still two of the box to go: Decision at Sundown and Comanche Station
So far Ride Lonesome is my favourite, with Buchanan a good second. For some reason I was never impressed by The Tall T, don’t no why, there’s something about that movie that prevents me from really liking it. Comanche Station has always been my favourite BB, so I’m looking forward to rewatching it.

-Average film from Cardone. Brett Halsey is good drunken hero and Fernando Sancho is one of the villains. Otherwise good film but there’s few way too long and boring scenes.
This was the last western/film I watched too - my comments are on its thread - but pretty much what Bill said.
Missouri Breaks (1976/Dir: Arthur Penn)
I like the movies of Arthur Penn but this one disappointed me. Marlon Brando is quite interesting as eccentric Lawman but this western was a bit too slow and boring for me. Didn’t enjoy the melancholic soundtrack. A western which tries very to be anti-climatic!
Interesting how many self-conscious or “anti-climactic” Westerns were released in America’s bicentennial year. As well as The Missouri Breaks there was The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Shootist (traditional and elegiac in many respects, but signalling the end of an era), and the one I’m halfway through at the moment, Robert Altman’s Buffalo Bill and the Indians. Of course, questioning, criticising and undermining his country’s heritage was very much Altman’s shtick…
All of these are anti-triumphalist, and all were made at a time when America was celebrating its achievements and its status.
Why?
Costner made good westerns. Dances with Wolves is not a bad film. And Open Range has probably the best shoot-out in a western since … since … maybe 1976
Open Range is a very good western. And the shootout is probably the best ever in a western. But I’ve heard a lot of negativity towards Dances with Wolves. Both my parents call it among the most boring movies they’d ever seen (next to Reds)
Open Range is a bit simple and extremely old fashioned in some of the dialogues and the characterizations. But there are better shoot-outs in westerns, but not too much. The ending of The Wild Bunch is far superior.
Dances with Wolves is generally a well made film, but a bit sentimental in parts. And the short version is better. And it was one of these films which got good reviews until it became a surprise success. Thereafter people were always keen on bashing it.
I suppose your right. The Wild Bunch’s action scenes has more of an old fashioned, Corbucci-esque intensity that is great. And ofcourse the revolutionary use of squibs adds a whole other sense of realism.
But the booming gunshots and effects in the Open Range shootout are stunning and feel more realistic than most. Though I doubt a colt 45. shot would send you flying as I’ve heard for a weapon to be able to send someone flying would also send you flying. I don’t know for sure as I’ve also heard a shot from a pistol like that could indeed knock you on your feet.
Well plotted, well paced, well done. Very plot heavy. I was at first expecting a kind of action movie with an alternate name like Machine Gun Killers but I was content with what I got. Definitely had many Thriller aspects. Numerous night scenes, mystery, and such. The action scenes were all pretty much well done. Piero Piccioni’s score was also very odd in a good way. All in all, I’m satisfied.
Alright. Special only for it’s good cinematography, non stop action, and Reeves first western and last movie. But it gets to be tedious and feel long even at 85 minutes.
