The Last Western You Watched?

That would be the over-doing it with the clean-up process that causes that. Really ridiculous that the people doing transfers haven’t learned to stop doing this.

That is the case with the blu-ray of GBU
They have that too in this library (the french release), I had already watched parts of it in a shop in Brussels, and now watched the first 20-25 minutes of the movie. It looks awfull. The MGM DVD release looks much better.

I just wish it was the normal version of the film without the extra scenes.

On the positive side the film is very stylish one might even say it’s a film-noir western.
On the other hand the film moves very slowly, some might even say it’s dull.
In any regard there is much personal drama and not very much action in this film and therefore I think it will disappoint many viewers since they expect that from a western.
IMO it’s a good but not great western, hence the 7/10 rating I gave it.

I do agree about this

I just watched “Warlock” with Henry Fonda, Richard Widmark and Anthony Quinn. It’s a great classical western with a lot of depth.
IMO this is one of the very best of the classical westerns and only a handful other classical westerns are as good or better.
9/10.

I just watched ”Western Union” with Randolph Scott it’s a decent enough western but not more than that.
6/10.

I just watched Fulci’s Wildfang. I have a week off and is was on German morning TV.

Carry On Cowboy. Not viewed a carry on film for a while and was missing that Sid James laugh.

I haven’t seen the carry on flicks for ages!

Used to watch them all the time when they were shown on TV alot in the 80’s.

Most of them were shown in Germany when I was like 10 or so… in the 80’s.

Apparently the flicks were cheap program fillers back them…

Do you have a favourite one you can remember then Dillinger ?

Well, I think it was that Ceasar and Cleopatra one. I remember Cleopatra being quite sexy…

It is sexy yes  . Alot of people tend to like the costume period style ones.

Yes she was…

Price of Death (Lorenzo Gicca Palli)

Been a while seen I’d seen this one. Still one of my favorites. Very atmospheric and I actually liked the lighter aspects. Made it more likeable. Mario Migliardi’s score was great and like the other 2 westerns he scored, it makes the film better.

5/5

Missouri Breaks (1976/Dir: Arthur Penn)
I like the movies of Arthur Penn but this one disappointed me. Marlon Brando is quite interesting as eccentric Lawman but this western was a bit too slow and boring for me. Didn’t enjoy the melancholic soundtrack. A western which tries very to be anti-climatic!
The Sons of Katie Elder (1965/Dir: Henry Hathaway
Hathaway made some marvelous Noirs in the 40’s and 50’s. Later he turned to direct westerns like How the West was won or True Grit. A typical western with John Wayne in his typical cliché role. Not bad at all and the overwhelming score from Bernstein helps the movie.
Face to Face
The best of the three I’ve watched with an excellent trio of actors: Milian, Volontè and Berger. Not only a fine western but also a good psychological character study.

Yes, dissapointing movie. Some good things in it, but overall it doesn’t really work.
Don’t remember any elaborate discussion on it here, so I wonder what others make of it (especially Stanton, I think he likes Penn)

Missouri Breaks is a fine western, which could be much better. In fact it could have become a masterpiece, but there are too many things which aren’t done too well for different reasons.
Brando’s last scene is a fantastic idea, but according to Penn Brando only did once what Penn expected from him, and that was on purpose when no camera was running. So this great idea was destroyed by Brando’s refusal to act in one of the most important scenes of the film. Now the scene looks uninspired.

It wasn’t a personal film for Penn, and it was not the first time when things went wrong for Penn at a point when he had all chances. The Chase was another film which had a potential for so much more.
