Once Upon a Time in the West / C’era una volta il West (Sergio Leone, 1968)

[quote=“Stanton, post:259, topic:322”]Jesus Christ, it’s Henry Fonda:

I’d seen it before, but still wonderful

I love this clip. I only saw someone talking about Fonda’s casting in a documentary, but his own version is hilarious!

Thank’s Stanton.

A classic interview clip. I don’t think Fonda has ever got the respect he deserves for taking on this role and playing it how he does. Leone gets his due credit for the casting, but Fonda, considering the values he was said to embody and the shocking nature of his role, really went out on a limb.

A masterstroke in one of the greatest Westerns ever made, regardless of origins.

The fact that a hollywood A lister like Fonda was willing to go to Italy to make SW’s really gave the genre a credibility boost in my opinion.

Ha! Nice one Alk0.

I’m leaning towards this one:

I just got this from a friend of mine who knows I love Leone and Cardinale.

Not the ‘what’… the ‘why’!!

Why I like Once Upon a Time in the West?

Frank: Morton once told me I could never be like him. Now I understand why. Wouldn’t have bothered him, knowing you were around somewhere alive.
Harmonica: So, you found out you’re not a businessman after all.
Frank: Just a man.
Harmonica: An ancient race. Other Mortons will be along, and they’ll kill it off.
Frank: The future don’t matter to us. Nothing matters now - not the land, not the money, not the woman. I came here to see you. ‘Cause I know that now, you’ll tell me what you’re after.
Harmonica: …Only at the point of dyin’.

This summons it up pretty good… What we’re witnessing in OUATITW is the death of an era! Even the title ‘Once Upon a time in the West’ indicates what once was, but is no more!!
This is the last breath of the Wild, Wild West… And what a beautiful last breath; the direction of Leone, Delli Colli’s pictures, Morricone’s music and the incredible performances by Fonda, Bronson, Cardinale, Ferzetti and Robards… Hell, even the trailer is beautiful and gives me goosebumps; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49FsaizH9tQ

And the stories related to this movie!!! Testi almost broke his back, Mullock comitted suicide, ‘The Fly-sequence’ being in fact made for a movie Argento and Duccio Tessari should have been done together, givin’ each main-character their own theme, the myth concerning lost footage e.g. Bronson getting beat up by the sheriff for the McBain-killings!

Leone on Fonda (Massimo Moscati, 1978)
“He showed up on the set with sideburns, a beard and dark contactlenses. I didn’t say anything to him, but I didn’t shoot his scenes, and day after day I removed one bit at a time: first the sideburns, then the beard, the moustache and finally the contactlenses. When he saw that I had focused the camera at the nape of his neck for his first appearance, he exclaimed: ‘Jesus Christ, now I understand.’
I wanted the public to recognize in this villain the same Fonda who had played good american presidents. And anyway, it’s the truth. The vice presidents of companies I have dealt with have all had baby-blue eyes and honest faces and what sons of bitches they were! Futhermore he’s no saint himself. He has had five wives. The last one fell out the window while trying to murder him. He stepped over her and went to act his part in Mr. Roberts as if nothing had happened.”

Don’t get me wrong, I like other sw, especially the ones of Valerii, Colizzi, Corbucci, Carnimeo among other, but this movie is, refrasing a quote from Duck, You Sucker… Not “a movie”… The movie!… The most beautiful, wonderful, fantastic, gorgeous, magnificent movie in the whole world!

Nice. The Danish movie program for the movie has eluded my collection so far, but I’ve managed to pick up a couple of press release sheets.

Still, very impressive. The Italian posters are magnificent …

Yep, but unfortunately in 2-sheets and no one in Denmark is capable of linenbacking! :frowning:
There’s a guy in Paris and some in L.A. and New York who can do this, but it’s VERY expensive!!! Futhermore the italian set did cost me a small fortune and I would shed tears of blood if they got lost or damaged during transport!!
But if anyone of you people knows someone in Rome, Italy or Malaga, Spain who can do linenbacking, please tell!!
/D

The posters are great, but Frank’s magaine isn’t bad either.
