May God Forgive You … But I Won’t / Chiedi perdono a Dio … non a me (Vincenzo Musolino, 1968)

Excellent scene, always sticks with me.

A few screenshots relating to the opening graveyard scene taken from the old Hobby & Work DVD (known for its terrible image quality)

Grrrreat colors …

(the pink panther strikes again)

What is more they are “adjusted”: here is the original… ;D

Hmm… swamp thing strikes again… ::slight_smile:

The long announced Koch release of May God Forgive You… But I Won’t is now definitely cancelled. Koch has given the rights back as it was impossible to become a proper DVD master.

^That’s too bad!
I have a copy without the opening graveyard scene. Does anyone know how long that scene is, and or does it really matter?

The introductory part is around 5:30, 1:00 the epilogue.

^Ok, thanks JC!

Finally I found more information about the two releases.

The first one, submitted in August 1968, was rated VM18 after several cuts in five scenes, among which the mouth-shooting one. The resulting film length was 2434 metres, equivalent to 89m. An appeal was made in October, but the unfavourable rating was confirmed by a vote of five to four.

A second, different release (with documented film length 2510 metres, equivalent to 91m40s), in which the prologue and conclusion missing from the Italian DVD were certainly present, was authorized without cuts and with a VM14 rating in December 1968.

On Christmas break from school, and forgot I had this ( Wild East version) laying around, ( bought it originally for Massacre At Grand Canyon ) Found it damn good and fun to watch, especially the violent machine gun scene ( not perfect, but gets the job done) also, the tense, poker scene ( Boy is Cjamango is fearless, and fast on the draw, a wonderfully shot scene) but my favorite had to be where Cjamango free’s himself and escape’s from the barn.( this is a type of scene that could easily go into one of my top ten scene’s of at spaghetti,) I couldn’t have been happier with George Ardisson’s performance. I’m a sucker for spaghetti’s that don’t drag on too long, don’t try and introduce multiple- unrelated ideas, and keep us somewhat on the edge of our seat the entire running time. Their are enough twists, feuds, action, violence, and a bit of comedy that I wasn’t bored for a second watching this. A stunning film!

Just watched my Wild East disc of this also. I was expecting it to be average but I thought it was really good. A pretty solid little revenge spaghetti.

Is the Wild East DVD uncut? I noticed a jump cut when he puts the gun in the guy’s mouth.

Yes and no: for the December '68 second release the scene was in all probability submitted to censors in this modified, toned-down form.

Thank you!

So true my friend, so true.

A gem that is vastly unknown!

The movie starts with a spoken prologue by Ardisson, the music slowly starts to play over his speech. It is an effective way how to start a movie. I don’t even think I’ve seen anything like that in sw. Ardisson had such a charismatic voice it is gonna make you care right from the beginning and it is gonna get better when you find out that the charismatic voice fits to equally charismatic Ardisson. I like Ivan Rassimov but I’m so happy he did not get the part since Ardisson really fits in to the movie and totally nails it.

Moreover soon you realize that the director knew what he was doing. There are great Leone inspired camera movements and lot of cool camera shots, the cut is excellent. The director managed to work brilliantly with light and shadows. It is just a pure pleasure to watch.

The story borrows elements from “Dove si spara di più”, “Why Go On Killing” and “Johnny Yuma” without being that mainstream. This one is tough, raw, violent and even sleazy There are two lightly dressed girls in scenes that look like they came from an erotic movie but it fits the mood of the movie. I only regret they cut the scene with the pistol in the mouth in the cut I’ve seen. It will surely take your attention if you check the profile of the film on this site!

Then we have Ghidra with unusual beard as the co-star. A charismatic actor who got the best out of his not too deeply written character. There is a scene where he takes an axe in his hand and it just one of his best scenes ever. Angry Ghidra is something you need to see. :=)

The score, though there are not many tracks, is also pretty good. It is mostly quite suspenseful but in some places unorthodoxly tender. I especially enjoyed the escape of a desperate Ardisson and the following hunt. Both attitudes work really well within the picture.

There is funny sidekick almost identical to the one in “Johnny Yuma” - he leaves the killing to Ardisson and collects the rewards in the exact same fashion. Now some might find these scenes little too cheerful for the movie. It did not bother me as it did not bother me in Johnny Yuma.

As stated above the camera shots are mostly excellent but at the end it might be maybe too creative. Musolino made many angled camera shots at the end similiar to later Musolino’s Quintana. This works imo well when used in small portions. If you overuse it it might be a little messy for your brain.

Easily 8/10 and maybe even higher. Definitely a must see for a genre fan.

Classy work with light:

My main complaint regarding May God Forgive You…But I Won’t is some of the more incidental music that was rather irritating, for example early during a riding scene. Otherwise and especially the music in the first two minutes of the movie is splendid with catchy themes, played by different leading instruments (flute, trumpet etc) and choir, with variable tempo.
The film is entertaining even if it is a simple revenge story. The locations are rapidly shifting between Almeria and Italy.
A deleted prologue and likewise epilogue were included on the Wild East DVD (and the SW Massacre At Canyon Grande) both showing an old antihero visiting the graves of his murdered family.

After this first watching I rate May God Forgive You…But I Won’t 6/10 with ranking 42 on my SW Top 50.

40 Taste Of Killing/Lanky Fellow (Tonino Valerii)
41 Django The Bastard/The Stranger’s Gundown (Sergio Garrone)
42 May God Forgive You … But I Won’t (Vincenzo Musolino)
43 Yankee (Tinto Brass)
44 The Brute And The Beast/Massacre Time (Lucio Fulci)
