OooooH! Deadwood is great!
Uh HUH! I never checked to see if there was a thread somewhere here for Deadwood. There must be.
Have you seen the whole series, Korano?
Who’z your fav?
You know i’ve never seen this one but i did happen to be flicking through the channels last night and caught a minute or so of it. What made me pause on it was the (for me) bemusing sight of lovably rogueish antique dealer Lovejoy effing and blinding…
Watching Deadwood will change your impression of Ian McShane for ever Silver. He is excellent in it but a very different chap to Lovejoy.

Who’z your fav?
Al, easy! Or maybe Doc.
Swearengen by name…
Yeah, that is easy. Al is probably everybody’s favorite. He’s mine too. I love Dan too though.
Didn’t you love the fight between him and The Captain. Like two elephant seals.
Have you seen the extra disc that comes with the complete set (20 disc)?
If you have not, I need to send it to you K.

That’s a good idea listing your Top Ten from each decade; is the first film on each section of the list your favorite of that decade?
In most cases it is, but in the case of the 50s and the 00s I can’t really pick a firm favourite.
Little Big Man
Pat Garret and Billy the Kid
Tombstone
I consider High Plains Drifter to be a virtual spaghetti, otherwise I would put it here.
McCabe and Mrs. Miller
Unforgiven
Outlaw Josie Wales
The Big Country
Wild Bill.
I have a bit of a thing about Wild Bill Hickok. He was THE true badass, western celebrity and mythic figure. A real life Charles Bronson.
In rough order…
- Unforgiven
- The Wild Bunch
- Tom Horn
- The Grey Fox
- Pale Rider
- The Shootist
- Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid
- Death Hunt (a western set in the far north)
- Chato’s Land
- The Professionals
- Geronimo
- High Plains Drifter
- Major Dundee
- Jeremiah Johnson
- Nevada Smith
- Ballad of Cable Hogue
- The Outlaw Josey Wales
- Nevada Smith
- Lonely Are The Brave
- The Searchers
The Grey Fox, that’s a great little film.
But Tom Horn?
Always interesting to see how mixed these lists are viewed from my ideas of a quality western.
Have re-read a lot of this thread and the worst list comes from my old friend SD (and made me smile):
ALL TIME Favourite SD Westerns YEAR 1968
HANG EM HIGH 1968 Clint Eastwood Inger Stevens
FIRECREEK 1968 Henry Fonda Inger Stevens
FIVE CARD STUD 1968 Dean Martin Inger Stevens
BANDOLERO 1968 Dean Martin Raquel Welch
And his criteria were most likely I. Stevens (yawn) and R. Welch (why not).
One Ok western (the Eastwood) and 3 total turkeys.
It did for me, I used to think of McShane as a run of the mill actor till i saw his performance as Al Swearengen, it’s a performance and a half.
