Criterion forum top 50 western poll
GB&U and OUATITW at number 10 and 26 respectively are inexcusable. Requiscant higher than Great Silence is just Weird…I wonder how many of the people voting for that poll actually saw it (or many SWs other than the Leone ones for that matter) Josey Wales and Dead Man in the top 10 are a joke.
To me Blazing Saddles may be an all time top 10 comedy :)
There was probably no poll. Maybe a list done by the TimeOUt team.

That was my idea too.

Is there a way to see the Criterion poll without subscribing? If there’s a thing I hate it’s subscribing to website I know I won’t visit often. Or maybe someone could post the list on here?

As I said only 16 voters.

Maybe some here who have seen most of the listed films may like to make a list, and we just put further flesh on it.

What is requested, a Top 10, 20, 100, 1000 ?

The first I haven’t seen, starting at N° 1, is N° 37 Canyon passage (there are quite a few N° 37 by te way)
Don’t know 44, 67, 79 and 94

“Hign Noon” at number 37 that is ridiculous.

Haven’t You seen any of those Glauber Rocha flicks the Brazilian Cinema Novo/Neew Cinema director ?

They asked for 50

Some of the voters have stated that they have seen about 80 % of the 100.

44 Black God, White Devil (Glauber Rocha 1964) - aka God and the Devil in the Land of the Sun - not a western, but with a SW like killer named Antonio das Mortes whom Rocha dedicated another film in 1968
94 By the Law (Lev Kuleshov 1926) - also no western- a satire
67 Whity (RW Fassbinder 1971) - strange inclusion, not so many people in the world have seen Whity. It wasn’t released theatrically in Germany only shown on TV, but now there is a DVD.
Which 79:
79 Ramrod (Andre de Toth 1947) 72
79 Silver Lode (Allan Dwan 1954) 72
79 Two Rode Together (John Ford 1961)
I assume the first which is a good western, but for me also a surprise as it is also not too well known.

Friend of mine recently viewed Whity. He was mortified. He mainly likes traditional westerns but was just giving this a try.

Btw I have re-watched One Eyed Jacks one evening too late, and with only 16 voters I would have catapulted it from # 53 to # 36.

Yeah, but gotta get your mind around the context in which the film is placed in the poll. Polls are an agenda-driven exercise over at Criterion Forum. The members have been instructed in how to view the film by this domino harvey character.

There are so many flaws in the poll I hesitate to enumerate them, and I don’t mean the position of the films in the voting.

That’s not a bad idea.

I own 80% of the films on DVD and I’ve seen perhaps 95%. Most of them I’ve seen more than once, and some I’ve seen dozens of times.

79 Silver Lode

I’ll try to make a Top 50, no idea how difficult that will be

Without any modesty I can say that I have seen them all, and from the also rans I only had to miss one. Stranger on Horseback by Jacques Tourneur is one of the rarest in Germany, and I also never managed to get an English copy. But it ain’t that famous either.

Really? Explain.

I only entered the forum very late, and haven’t read the whole 20+ pages of the thread. It seems they started it already half a year ago and they proposed films for watching and they tried to watch as much of the proposed and discussed films as possible.

It wasn’t easy, and I had to skip 30 - 50 westerns I would like to have in.

And I did not chose any of the half-westerns.

I won’t do that either
The Gold Rush and My Little Chickadee are good movies, but I don’t see them as westerns. On the other hand, I tend to see a comedy like Blazing Saddles as a western. I guess there’s always a gray area. What about a movie like Ride with the Devil?

Blazing Saddles is unlike Support Your Local Sheriff or Cat Ballou at first a comedy and than a western, so I ignored it too. It is very tricky for me to compare comedies like Go West, The Paleface, Der Schuh des Manitu or Pardners with “serious” westerns.
Same problem with the Trinity films, which I prefer not to have in my SW list.

Ride the Devil is a western for me. But in the end one should do it like the criterion guys did it. If one thinks it is western, it is a western.

Alright

I’ll read the entire thread first (are you Lighthouse by the way?)

Maybe
