Controversial movie debate thread

i can see Taxi Driver being boring… it kind of is… but that also makes the ending more powerful for me, and sometimes i like movies that are boring like that- if i am in the proper mood… puts me into their world if i can let myself be absorbed into the film

Boring is a subjective word based on taste. I love Taxi Driver so maybe we can visit that soon.

you are correct, sir.

Talking about taste I’d say most terms are subjective

I’m not a Scorcese fan, but I do like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull
I do understand what autophex is saying (in the other thread too ;)), about the film: it’s ‘kinda’ boring, but that makes the ending more powerful too. I would say the film is a bit too obvious in saying what it has to say.

Agree.

Agree here also

Cheers

Comments on Taxi Driver. Watching De Niro slip into more and more into his own world is something I like. His ideas on things are sometimes funny, like what type of film to take a lady to. Doing all the overtime he can is something I find of personal interest as I did the same for a few years in my life. The build up to the end of the film is well worth the wait for me. However, I would of done things a little diferent at the end… De Niro would have died. The music I always remember and somtimes think certain themes are played to much, but I am sort of used to this principle with viewing Spaghetti westerns. Foster is great. A film I always come back to, but appreciate that some may find the film boring if they do not get into the De Niro character.

F@&k them

Spot on ENNIOO! I have the same feelings about watching De Niro/his character in this movie… the guy is crazy but on some level I find myself relating to him and always laughing at his innocent craziness in taking the girl to that movie!

I relate to his character more than I care to (minus the porn thing). One of my favorite all time views. Just recently revisited this last month. Love the score. It was Bernard Herrmann’s last if I remember correct. People fing the ‘talkin’ to me’ scene as the focal point but it’s the other scene where he’s talking to himself that grabs me.

“Listen you fuckers, you screwheads. Here is a man that would not take it anymore, who would not…let” cutscene

“Listen you fuckers…”

This scene represents how calculated he is getting in his madness. The duplicity of his character makes the movie interesting. After all, he’s just trying to help this little girl all the while searching for companionship.

Now I’m allowing myself to get off topic. Before we move on from Pulp Fiction, we should at least discuss what is in the briefcase.

Marcellus’s soul is what I heard.

ah, i’ve heard a bunch over the years… i think one of them was “the evil that men do” …being that the lock combo is 666

the same thing from Kiss Me Deadly…

Yes i heard the soul thing too. One supposed hint for that is also the band-aid on marcellus neck, as well as the number 666 as he might have sold it to the devil. But i never knew the devil was three student types who easily give it away to two guys in a suit.

Also everybody who sees whats inside the case (Vincent Vega and Pumpkin(Tim Roth, no idea if he was pumpkin or honeybunny)), says its beautiful. Don´t know if it can be a soul, since nobody would identify it.
So I would have said it is a lot of gold. But now I say we are not supposed to know and I think it is not even an actual thing. Good example for a MacGuffin.
I never really cared that much about it. If you start to think about it too much you start to wonder why the kids had it and what they were supposed to do with it. Jules says that he is sent from their business partner marcellus. So what was the business? Were they supposed to sell the contents of the case, did they steal it?

So my final answer is: The script to Tarantino´s long awaited kung-fu movie shot in mandarin.

I hope that becomes a reality.

What I heard is that it is Marcellus’s soul as well. They are returning his soul to him that he sold to the devil. I’ve heard that the devil takes souls from the back of the neck (hence the ban-aid). The bullets don’t kill Jules & Vincent because they are doing a good deed therefore the divine intervention.

i think the soul idea fits best, and i’ve heard all of that before except the bit about the bullets not killing them… interesting

Well I never heard the devil takes soul through the neck. I rather think this made up story fits the ban-aid, but maybe someone can bring up the truth.
And MArcellus does not seem to be a bad guy who wants his soul bakc and become a good person, so why would god support jules and vincent in getting his soul back.
And what is the soul doing in the kids appartment and what was their business in it? For me the soul think brings up more questions than answers.
And how does Pumpkin know what a soul looks like??? Just recently watched the movie and I think tarantino wanted to play a bit with the audience, the shining coming out of the case, the shock it has on people seeing it.
So the number 666 is also pointing to the devil, but i think he wants to make people wonder.
As well as in inglourious basterds, when landa orders milk for shosanna. Does he recognize her, or not. Why does he order milk, some argue it can only be because he recognies her. We are not supposed to find out.

Well he would not be good until he got his soul back. Maybe Flock Of Seagulls heisted it? Who knows.
