You’re thinking of his Mad Magazine stuff aren’t you?
As for Groo, I love it; I always buy old issues of it at comic conventions when ever I see then.

order of mycomicshop.com great site with decent Prices, great for me getting back issues of the Jonah Hex 1970’s run.
And of course Groo, lol
just came from a meeting with my comics companero and brought some stuff home :
Warren Ellis : Ministry of Space
Aetheric Mechanics
Orbiter
Ignition
Ocean
Freakangels
yap, a big load of his works, plus Y: Last Man from Vaughan
I love Ellis, I still think his Freak Angels is some of his best work, pity it’s stopped, we were spoilt I think with it being a free web comic…
Did you ever get Black Summer ?
Oh and Vaughan is great, ever get EX Machina ?
actually i didn´t read that much of Ellis works, few issues of Transmetropolitan, Fell, Hotwire… but it certainly will change in few next days
from Vaughan i´d read only Pride of Baghdad , no ExMachina yet
been busy with Azzarello and Grant Morrison
You have not read Planetary by Ellis ?
For me it really is his best work, I did not mention it before cause I had thought you had read it, it’s usually where people start with Elllis , that and Transmetropolitan, and good call on Fell it’s awesome…
If don’t mind me asking? What bar 100 Bullets would you recommend by Azzarello?
guilty as charged - not much of Planetary yet, only one issue, somehow it never came across my way, but it is on my read-list too…
i don´t understand that question (that “bar” confused me ), do you mean which book of 100 bullets i would recommend? or do you mean some another comics by him?
anyways, from 100 bullets i had read only first two books
but, from his other efforts i absolutely recommend his works on Hellblazer - Hard Times, Freezes Over, Good Intentions, Highwater and Ashes and Dust - they are one of my favorite comicbooks i´ve read so far
and then Loveless, it is very gritty western tale, some 24 issues only, but pure joy to read (at least for me) - great art by Frusin and Zezelj
Sorry bar means not including, I have quite a lot of the 100 bullets run, and for the most part enjoyed it loads.
Hellblazer Hard Times I have and Loveless they are great… Although the last issue of Loveless being set years later and not in the west , was a bit dissapointing for me. But over all one of my favorite western comic series.
The rest of his Hellblazer run I don’t have , I must pick it up, wish he would write some Punisher… Talk about a writer suited to writing a character. Lol
yeah, he would make a good punisher story - i have to pick up some punishers, have been somewhat sloppy on this antihero lately, btw, what punisher books are your favorites? give me some tip
Ah right ! Hold on to your hat Amigo, lol, can’t go wrong with these, I will start with the Punisher MAX series by Garth Ennis, you can not go wrong with that, it’s , it’s own universe, not part of the Marvel Universe IE no X Men, Spiderman, Hulk, and the stories are based on real world crimes, this is by Garth (Preacher,The Boys,Crossed,Hellblazer,HitMan,) Ennis and is some of his best work he has ever done on any character. Ennis done an eight year run on the Punisher, and said it was a character he was born to write. Speaking of which lol
BORN
Where it all starts, for Frank Castle in his third and final tour in The Vietnam war , he is stationed at the fire base Valley Forge, the war is ending the USA is pulling out, Castle is not happy, he has found that he enjoys War. It gives him purpose, and upcoming events are going to shape him into the Person that will become The Punisher. This is maybe Ennis’s greatest story of Frank Castle, it works on so many levels. To the point that it’s quite ambiguous about certain things, (read it see what I mean!lol) and has caused some arguments among fans. I can’t recommend this enough. Readers that would not even like the Punisher, or have zero interest in him would still enjoy this, it’s that good a story.
i´ve read some of them, i think three books of Ennis´ Punisher, but that was quite some time ago, also Born
so, i was thinking about some newer stuff, for example i liked one Punisher book i´d read in a bookstore (on a sofa, yap) and it has some Hell´s Kitchen title, don´t know exactly now, but it was beautifully drawn by Leandro Fernandez, i think
yeah, a good story - actually, when i think about it, Ennis was just a great writer for this hero, so no need for Azzarello (sorry, Brian)

lol you are quick on the draw !!!
No probs I know what you mean :
it’s Kitchen Irish the second volume in Ennis’s Punisher MAX run .
The arcs are as follows:
In The Begining. Vol 1
Kitchen Irish. Vol 2
Mother Russia. vol 3
Up is down black is white. vol 4
Slavers. Vol 5
Barracuda. Vol 6
Man of Stone. vol 7
Widow Maker. Vol 8
Long cold dark night. Vol 9
Valley Forge. Vol 10
and BORN being the prequel.
Plus the three one shots collected in the trade paper back , called First to Last, are Tyger, The Cell, and , The End.
Well said about Fernandez, he’s my favorite Punisher artist and his work got even better after the Kitchen Irish arc, he drew the Up is Down Black is White , Slavers (maybe the greatest Punisher story, ever!), Man of Stone arcs.
The Long Cold Dark Night , is also worth mentioning as being a great arc and is up there with the best. And is by my near favorite Punisher artist Goran Parlov.
Newer stuff ?
Jason( Scalped ) Aaron’s current run on Punisher MAX with artist Steve Dillon is a worthy sucessor to Ennis in every way.
Collected in trade paperback is:
Kingpin. Vol 1
Bullseye. vol 2
Frank. vol 3
Aarons run is still going and is in the Homeless arc at the moment, and is not collected yet, I have to say Aaron has done a great job in adding to the mytho’s about the Punisher that Ennis started , and Aarons run is coming to it’s end soon and Punisher MAX which is sad, but it’s going out on a high.
Other Punisher stories / Trades worth getting that are new ?
Try the Punisher stories from the Marvel Universe (ie same universe as x Men Avengers etc) which are not MAX ( ie it’s not 18 rated, no cursing etc) but are still plenty violent lol are :
Punisher Dark Reign ,Punisher Dead End, Punisher In The Blood. Are fine stories, not as good as Ennis’s Punisher stories that are set in the Marvel Universe and started of his eight year run on the character, which are Welcome Back Frank, (2000) and it’s sequel The Resurrection of Ma Gnucci(2009) which is new (ish).
At the moment Greg (Queen and Country, Batgirl,Stump Town) Rucka is writing the Punisher and it’s as good as the Punisher MAX stuff, he has a very original take on the Punisher and he is helped by some great art by Marco Checchetto, this run is only six issues in but Rucka is Already making his mark on the character, am actually loving this, Rucka shows the Punisher as a shadowy killer vigilante who as a reader, you never know quite what he is going to do next, cause Rucka does not let us know what Frank is thinking…
Also great
Sorry can’t help it , some great art from the new Punisher comic by Marco Checchetto.
wow, i see you are good with Frank
thank you for that amount of informations - i´ll use that as a guide, very helpfull
by the way, Ennis´ librettos on early Hellblazer are one of my favorites of the series, did a good job with John
noticed somewhere that also Peter Milligan did some work on Pun (his run on Hellblazer is truly great)
i´ve read some Scalped issues, so that´s great Aaron did some Punisher, must check that out
yes, Fernandez is also one of my fav authors, Marcelo Frusin style like, i discovered Leandro through his works on Northlanders
I have nearly all of Ennis’s Hellblazer run in trade , now really am no horror fan but this I really enjoyed so much so that I went on and bought Hard Times trade which I love…
Have you tried Ennis’s CROSSED series ?
i´ve read first issue, now i don´t remember much of it - was it about zombies? or something like that
also i haven´t read Boys yet, well so much series around that one can´t catch them all
been reading a lot of manga lately, still ongoing series Dorohedoro by Q-Hayashida
and Gantz by Oku Hiroya, also ongoing cyberpunk series, it has some 350 chapters, a lot of reading, but great manga
Tomas what about D.R. and Quinch?
