I’ve been reading more Tardi lately, beginning with The Arctic Marauder
This is very early work from Tardi. A mix of mystery story and early science fiction of Verne.
I think it has been first published as a series in a magazine but it was discontinued, thus the book ends oddly.
I didn’t like the story as much as i like the detective stories of Tardi. There’s some good building of mystery and weird characters in the beginning but in the last chapters of the book the big mystery is solved and the story changes into different kind of style which i didn’t find as fascinating.
But the story isn’t the main atraction in this book, it’s the artwork. It’s the most astounding I’ve ever seen in any comic book. Character are drawn in usual simple Tardi style but the backgrounds are filled with details carved out with the scrathboard method. I could just stare the pages for hours. Amazing job from Tardi.
i got some new comics releases, so - Brian Azzarello´s new post-apocalyptic mini-series Spaceman looks very interisting
and it is drawn by Brian´s old partner Eduardo Risso (they did together great Vertigo series 100 Bullets)
also some new western comics showed up - first issue of All Star Western is featuring taciturn and scarfaced gunslinger Jonah Hex in 1880 Gotham City
i went to a bookstore today and bought a graphic novel from Bryan Talbot
well, something what i wanted to read for a long time - Grandville
it´s a steampunk fantasy adventure/detective comics,
but instead of people, characters are animals, something like in Blacksad - recommended
A question for Frank Castle a.k.a. Mr.Punisher.
That picture of the Punisher in your avatar, is that from a comic or a graphic novel? (or a comic that they turned into a graphic novel).
I don’t really like having comics nowadays, I prefer it when they decided to make a book out of them after and lump them together, like they did with Loveless etc.
so sorry about late reply my avatar is from the graphic novel by Chuck Dixon and art by the late great Sal Buscema called A MAN CALLED FRANK, it’s a western spin on the origin story of Frank Castle , it reads like a cross between the man with no name and the wild bunch, Chuck Dixon done some great old school 90’s Punisher stories, and this is an over looked gem, there was supposed to be a sequal but it was never done, which is a real shame…
Great comic, I don’t have it all, but really, REALLY, good.
Plus just in case anyone thought Jonah Hex got cancelled? Not so, rebooted with the rest of the DC universe now as:
All Star Western, Jonah Hex comes to Gotham!!! And team up with Doctor Arkham, creator of the famous asylam!!!
The Haunted Tank was a viable concept, but the ghost of Jeb Stuart was a weak choice for an on-going series. -Just because the tank was a Stuart. That relegated the ghost to basically spewing military-strategy for whatever situation the tank-crew was involved in, rather than being a kind of mysteriously deadly undead-demon, haunting tank-and-crew for an unknown reason… whom they were never quite sure whose side the ghost was on. I recall many situations where the ghost-of-Stuart would materialize and say one-dimensional stuff like: " Good job against that farm-house, " etc.
The new Marvel Universe (616) Punisher comic is as great as the PunisherMAX series, and has some stunning art as you can see, This comic is actually set in the same universe as Spiderman , Daredevil etc, unlike the PunisherMAX series, and the new Punisher is written by Greg Rucka who is just an awesome writer(Batgirl,Queen and Country etc etc)
something for western comics inspiration - Apache Skies
i´m not very familiar with writer Ostander, but Leonardo Manco is pretty good artist
i admire his works since Hellblazer
good story like from gritty spaghetti and even better artwork
i was in a mood for some funny strip comics, so i pulled out some old stuff - Calvin and Hobbes : Thereby Hangs A Tale
i must say i like it more now than when i first read it years ago
If it’s funny comic books look no further… Lol
Been going for years, at first a piss take of Conan and was published by Marvel then Image comics. Truely funny comic, you don’t even have to like fantasy comics like Conan to get the joke…
Aragones is a sure bet, very entertaining artist
I’ve just read Lansdale/Truman Lone Rider comic. It was quite enjoyable, too bad they didn’t write more stuff for the character.
Surprised that he is still alive and working
i think Alan Moore gave him some of his immortality elixirs…

I used to have loads of Groo comics as a kid, great stuff. Wish I still had them.

Yea I have some of this, not bad comic by Topps, have you seen Truman’s latest?
if your a fan of Traumans work, it’s nothing new, really, you would seen this all before in his Scout, Jonah Hex, work, but if your a Spag western fan like myself, it’s absolutely great, and it’s only two issues in , so it easy to catch up…
More Groo:
Lol, it’s what he is all about…
About Truman, sadly American comics are hard to come by in the town where I live. Only when they release books compiling several issues that you can buy in regular book stores and that doesn’t happen very often. This Lone Ranger comic was included in a compilation book about The Lone Ranger and Zorro.
I didn’t know Aragones has made comics with any text, thought they were all silent.
