Comics & Graphic Novels

almost finished, i´ll write something about it tomorrow
somehow i ended up with plenty of books to read, and i have forgot about DR and Quinch a little :stuck_out_tongue:

actually, i realized it’ll take me few more days to finish it …
i thought i had read more stories of it, but i’m only on Get Drafted

finally, finally, I made it, Stanton, man
so, i’m done with DR and Quinch
i would say that i liked DR & Quinch go to Hollywood most
but all of them were okay, although i haven’t laughed that much (i would say i was smirking)
now i would go for another Moore´s comics - Promethea, Halo Jones, Albion, 1963
any recommendations, Stanton - what’s best of it?

1963 is a homage to the old Marvel comics, and more like the first 6 numbers of 6 comics. A beginning of something for which never an ending was intended. Strange …

Albion is not really from Moore, but from his daughter. Not bad, not recommended.

Halo Jones is pretty good but only 2 volumes of 3 were made. But the story line has not an open end, so you can buy it.

Promethea is again very daring, but a bit uneven.
It begins just like another odd super hero comic, but turns then quickly into a fascinating journey into magic and the world of the Kabbalah, which Moore describes over several volumes in a philosophical way.

What else have you read of Moore’s work?

whaaaaa, that’s something for me, then the next Moore is Promethea. Howgh
did he make some more comics about magic?
what’s about Alan Moore’s Yuggoth Cultures and Other Growths?

From Hell
League of Ex. Gentlemen 1-2
V for Vendetta
Watchmen
Batman- Killing Joke
some Wildcats
some Top Ten, some Smax
Jack B. Quick
that’s all

That’s not good imo. Again not really by Moore. Based on some of his writings, but is actually written by someone else.

Moore is very interested in magic and such things. The aspect I like the least in his work, but it works very well in his narratives.

But then read Promethea first.

yeah, i know, i’m familiar with his life and hobbies

thanks for your recommendations, Stanton

Have you read Moore’s Neonomicon? I think it’s supposed to be based on Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythology. Sounds interesting.

no, i´ve only saw it in his bibliography, it could be based on it
Stanton have you read this one?

Actually, three volumes were made, out of a planned nine (I should know, I have the original 2000 AD issues it appeared in).

You are right. My memory …

No, but will be the next buy. Parts of it were already published a few yeas ago as The Graveyard. Remember nothing of it. Probably one I also did not like that much.

hm, i totally forgot about Moore’s 1910, what is weird, when i think about what it is (third volume of Ex. Gents, if i’m not mistaken)
how many volumes of Ex Gents exist to the date? have you read it Stanton?

If you have read I and II next should be The Black Dossier, which is not volume III (don’t ask me why). A very special sequel.

Vol III is made of 3 parts, and Century #1 1910 is only the first one. #2 1969 was already published, and as the 3rd part will only be released later this year, i haven’t bought it yet, but will do soon. Together with Neonomicon.

Hmmmm Moore’s work of late has been for want of a better word ? Crap.

From Black Dossier, 1910,1963, all well below par, Moore and an other favorite writer of mine, Frank Miller, have really produced some bad work lately , and both of them seem to be going bat shit crazy in their old age , with Moore slagging of the whole comic industry and Miller saying it’s wrong to protest…

Black Dossier was pretty good if you ignore most of the dossier itself. Strange ending, though.

Lol yea god in 3D !!!

It’s just Moore being Moore I guess…

I got a Tardi book for my birthday last year and I have read it about 4 times since November.

I have been always a fan of war comics and this one is probably one of the best in the genre. Well written and absolutely horrific in its depiction of the hell that was the Western Front.

I also picked this up last week and it is a great followup series to his War Stories comics.

Garth Ennis is one of the best at doing WW2 and he does not show you the hero macho bullshit but rather the realistic end that a lot of soldiers and civilians saw (similar to the great EC comics of the 1950’s)

i’m reading Goražde - war in east Bosnia by Joe Sacco and graphic novel adaptation of Paul Aster’s novel City of Glass

I recently picked up a bunch of collections and graphic novels (mostly war comics):

Garth Ennis’ Battlefields Volume 2 (Motherland, Happy Valley, and Firefly and His Majesty)
Invaders Classic Volume 1 and 2
Captain America: Death of Captain America Books 1-3
Captain America: The Man With No Face
The Walking Dead: Book 14
Fax From Sarajevo (one of best modern conflict books I have read)
Sgt. Rock: The Prophecy
Charley’s War Volumes 2 and 3

I have read most of them so far (have not gotten to Charley’s War or the 2nd Invaders book yet).
