Comics & Graphic Novels

Blueberry was a very good western, but only for the original run of the series up to the 2 Angel Face (1974) albums.

When Giraud and Charlier started again in 1979 it soon became a child comic again, and the next 5 or 6 albums were often disappointing.

The new cycle, from which dust is the final album started good again, but the ending was lousy.

Another excellent European western comic was Comanche by Hermann and Greg. especially the albums 3 - 7 and 9.

What about Jerry Spring? I’ve never seen a copy in English, but have always wondered about it.

Jerry Spring is too old fashioned.

Here’s a Comanche page:

A cover probably inspired by a SW:

Really ? About Blueberry ? I thought it got so much better as the series went on, the Geronimo arc was great!

Any Comanche in English ?

don’t know if any of the Comanche comics were released in English.

Here are the original covers:

The first 10 are the albums made between 69 and 82. The 11th collects a few short stories, the other 3 are from collections of the whole thing.

The main character is the red-head on several of the covers.

And here you can watch in big a few beautiful sites and images from every album:

Are there any US westerns drawn as good as these or those from Giraud?

You mean the Tombstone story line? Which are the 5 last albums.

Rio, by Doug Wildey, best known as the creator / lead artist on Jonny Quest:

I’m really digging the Jonah Hex series that everyone else is talking about, but I came into it a fan of Jordi Bernet already.

Sorry been away for a while I would like to recommend this:

This is pure SW but set in the world of 2000AD’s Judge Dredd. Any SW fan would love it…

As for Blueberry i have read only in the English reprints up to just after the Angel face arc, which is the Geronimo story.

There was an other 4 books I think altogether in the Marvel Epics line, but are really dear to buy nowdays…

I actually own most of the original issues Missionary Man appeared in; it’s a quality read, well worth checking out.

Had a great experience over the weekend. Got to meet veteran comic artist and writer Joe Kubert. He lives in my area and he did a rare appearance at a store and he was a class act all the way. I was able to have several things signed including a couple of my DC Archive books which he personalized for my sons. The best part of the whole experience was he did not charge a dime for anything.

Nice one! Old Joe is a legend!

On the same kind of note, Garth Ennis was again in my comic shop today, and once again I missed him !!! Lol

Also like to recommend this character to my fellow SW fans:

Johnny Alpha the main character is a Bounty Hunter in the future that hunts down all manner of criminals, it’s the same Universe as Judge Dredd, but always has been really a western very much in it’s early days it’s in volumes 1 to 5 , the art is great see below:

Real Clint Eastwood vide to the character, as I have said before SW fans and comic fan would enjoy…

That’s really neat, Frank! Which Archives did you get signed? Sgt. Rock, maybe?

I just picked up a great reprint of a Kubert book that I think just came out a few weeks back. You could even sort of stretch to say it’s Leone-, or at least OUATIA-related. It’s called Jew Gangster, and it features Kubert doing some slightly stylistically different work. I see shades of Breccia, Pratt, Bernet and Toth in this one:

Jew Gangster ?!? Knew nothing about this ? When did this first come out?

So, DC Comics is rebooting its entire line, with every title starting again with a new number one issue. At first I hated this, but now I’m kind of intrigued by the line-up of titles and seeing what the writer/artist pairings are going to do. For anyone interested, here’s a current list of what has been announced:

I’ve already updated my standing order and shall be picking up the following:

  1. Justice League by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee
  2. Action Comics by Grant Morrison and Rags Morales
  3. Superman by George Pérez and Jesus Merino
  4. Batman by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo
  5. Batman And Robin by Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason
  6. Green Lantern by Geoff Johns, Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy
  7. Green Lantern Corps by Peter J. Tomasi, Fernando Pasarin and Scott Hanna
  8. Swamp Thing by Scott Snyder and Yanick Paquette
  9. Justice League Dark by Peter Milligan and Mikel Janin
  10. All-Star Western by Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Grey and Meridat

This is in addition to the other Marvel and indie titles I pick up monthly. I’m looking forward to see how these books stack up.

Damn, this will just confuse the continuity even more than it already is.

Yes Sgt. Rock Archives Volume 1 and one of my favorite war comic characters Enemy Ace volume 1.

If you have not checked out Enemy Ace I highly recommend it - very well researched and perfectly drawn war comic (he appeared in Star Spangled War Stories).

and Damn Garth Ennis! I love his stuff too. Enemy Ace: War In Heaven is awesome stuff as are his War Story comics. D-Day Dodgers and Condors are excellent stories.

it is a complete reboot of 52 series in the DC universe. I don’t have the time to keep track anymore.

Yea am a big Ennis fan , have near all his work, below is a great western spin on Ghost Rider he did, as I always say any SW fan would love it am sure !Lol

If you like your Ennis, and your SW’s with a load of the supernatural, this is it ! Some great art too…

That looks awesome, Frank Castle.

A question for Frank Castle a.k.a. Mr.Punisher.

That picture of the Punisher in your avatar, is that from a comic or a graphic novel? (or a comic that they turned into a graphic novel).

I don’t really like having comics nowadays, I prefer it when they decided to make a book out of them after and lump them together, like they did with Loveless etc.
