Alternative Top 20

As I had just checked your revised Top 20, I have to notice that your alt. Top 20 should start logically with W Django.

It seems the rules for the alt. Top 20 are still pretty tricky …

Btw as you like W Django so much, what do you think about El puro?

It does seem so, but I’m damned if I know how much simpler I can make them.

But here goes as a “how to” guide.

  1. Choose your Top 100 for the official Top 100 list and submit it to Stanton via that thread.
  2. Take that same list and delete every film which appears amongst the top 18 from the Official List HERE
  3. Everything still left on your list is your starting point for your Alternative Top 20 list
  4. Complete that list with every other film you like you want to include.
  5. Submit that list to me via this thread here.

Does that help?

Let’s try to make it easier:

For the alternative top 20 every SW is eligible which is not in the big forum’s top 18:

https://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Essential_Top_20_Films

Which means:

  1. every other Spag beginning with # 19 (which is Django Kills) and then downwards in that list is eligible for the Alt.Top 20.
  2. all films in your personal top 20, which are not in the forum’s Top 18, should automatically also be in your Alt.Top 20.

yes and yes

I actually drew a blank on what else to include in my original Top 20, and just put W Django in there. I do enjoy it quite a bit, it’s very solid story wise, and I love how they decided to end it, a right to the point ending.

I’ve never seen El Puro to be honest, but I’ve heard quite a lot of high praise for it. I’m worried the high hype it gets will leave me underwhelmed when I actually do get to watch the film, but you never know when it comes to films.

So why don’t you just watch El puro? Isn’t in on the Tube?

Yes it is. The Reward_s Yours... The Man_s Mine _ WESTERN MOVie - YouTube First about 2 years ago I found it too arty with the long haired guys and weird story in the beginning, but then it grew better and better, and now I rate it 8/10. No fist fights, no shooting from the roofs etc, but a very nice serious mood and well acting, with Robert Woods in top form.

Not entirely irrational question:

After deleting all films already in the Forum’s Top 18 from my own Top 20, I’m left with a list of 14 films, which makes constructing my alternative top 20 much easier.

Django Kill, still the official no. 19, is now sitting at no. 8 on that list of 14. Should it continue as no. 8 on my alternative list? Or does its position as a borderline case mean it should automatically go to the top of my alternative list?

Well the good news is for the Alt Top 20 it doesn’t matter. Every film you include gets 1 point. No matter if you place it first or tenth.

We chose this system for the Alt Top 20 because for many folk as you go down your list the films become largely interchangeable. So the points system essentially says “all of these are worth watching” :slightly_smiling_face:

Excellent. So here’s my alternative Top 20:

  1. Réquiem para el gringo (Duel in the Eclipse). José Luis Merino. 1968.
  2. E Dio disse a Caino (And God Said to Cain). Antonio Margheriti. 1969.
  3. Il pistolero dell’Ave Maria (The Forgotten Pistolero). Ferdinando Baldi. 1969.
  4. La taglia è tua… l’uomo l’ammazzo io (El Puro). Edoardo Mulargia. 1969.
  5. Un minuto per pregare, un istante per morire (A Minute to Pray, a Second to Die). Franco Giraldi. 1968.
  6. John il Bastardo (John the Bastard). Armando Crispino. 1967.
  7. Tepepa (Blood and Guns). Giulio Petroni. 1969.
  8. Se sei vivo spara (Django Kill … If You Live, Shoot!). Giulio Questi. 1967.
  9. Bandidos. Massimo Dallamano. 1967.
  10. Django il bastardo (The Stranger’s Gundown). Sergio Garrone. 1969.
  11. Il prezzo del potere (The Price of Power). Tonino Valerii. 1969.
  12. I vigliacchi non pregano (Cowards Don’t Pray/The Taste of Vengeance). Mario Siciliano. 1968.
  13. L’ultimo killer (The Last Killer). Giuseppe Vari. 1967.
  14. Due once di piombo (My Name is Pecos). Maurizio Lucidi. 1966.
  15. I Crudeli (The Hellbenders). Sergio Corbucci. 1967.
  16. Mannaja (A Man Called Blade). Sergio Martino. 1977.
  17. Per il gusto di uccidere (Taste of Killing).Tonino Valerii. 1966.
  18. El desperado (The Dirty Outlaws). Franco Rossetti. 1967.
  19. California. Michele Lupo. 1977.
  20. Pagó cara su muerte (Death Knows No Time). León Klimovsky. 1968.

Question for the experts here

The essential top 20 states at the bottom:
“followed by these” and then you get a movie list from 21 to 50.

The alternative top 20 is a list for the films that get crowded out of the top 20 by “the big ones”.

What is the difference between 21-50 and alternative?
To me it’s not 100% clear.

Thanks

21 - 50 on the official list are just the films that sit in that place based on the scoring system for the official top 20 list submissions. We started the alternative 20 as a separate thing and the scoring there is based on a different system. Simply 1 point for each film submitted. No weighting for first or 20th or anything in between as I felt that by the time you get past your top 20 the placings become somewhat arbitrary. The fact that the alternative top 20 differs so much from 21-50 from the official list kind of proves my point I think.

Clear !
Thank you for explaining

OK Amigos and Amigas, after quite a bit of time watching some new stuff and re-watching quite a few established favorites, I’m doing updates on both the Official Top 20 and Alternative Top 20 Lists. This time around I plan on doing lists that honor both the current lists as they stand on their official pages and of my own personal preference, so this way I have a best of both worlds going on.

Nice @makesthemovie . Was thinking of doing something similar soon. Always good to have a reworking. Jesse and Lester is a surprize inclusion, I have to say !

Have I missed something really big? Am I sensationally slow-witted? Or was the Alternate Top 20 updated yesterday without any fanfare?

Seems like Vengeance is Mine fell out, Forgotten Pistolero nudged its way in and Death Sentence fell rather dramatically from number 4 to 18. That’s about all the major changes, I think.

You didn’t miss anything @JohnBaxter
I updated as part of the 3.0 changeover and was still tweaking details.

So yes, there are a few changes although the scores for many of these films are so close that they can shift quite a bit with just a couple of votes either way. e.g. there are just 4 points separating place number 3 with number 11. And we also have five films level on 18 points which fill spaces 19 to 23 so this time I let Vengeance is Mine slip out to give Forgotten Pistolero a place in the sun.

I usually update in the new year so it could be all change again then.
