Very well put.
@QuickDraw @last.caress @Dean
Since it has a forum page, I technically count it but I can see why most people wouldnāt. Either way, I havenāt seen El Puro but Iāll have to check it out now.
Youāre not wrong there. Even though I like it, itās definitely not the type of movie I would choose to watch most nights. Not a technically perfect movie either, it definitely feels undevloped at times, but the way it blends the western genre with surrealism is interesting to me.
Iām almost positive that it wouldnāt count on this chart because itās simply not a spaghetti western and our coordinator for this list, the venerable and elderly @Phil_H, is quite rightly a bit of a stickler for his definitions of what qualifies as a spag and what doesnāt. That said, Iām not 100% certain on the rules as they stand; he may indeed allow in any movie which has been granted a dedicated page on the site. I sincerely doubt it, but you never know. If we can gently coax him from his early-afternoon nap he might be able to clarify for us. If he isnāt blind drunk on Cilit Bang and cheese strings as he often is by this time of day, of course.
I can confirm that El Topo wouldnāt qualify.
El Puro on the other hand would be very welcome.
Now then, back to my nap.
@last.caress @Phil_H
Ah well, unlike a Spaghetti Western hero, Iāll respect the ruling of our peerless leaders. Actually not such a bad thing if itās not included since that leaves room for Garringo on my top twenty.
Figured since I did my Official Top 20, Iād do my Alternative as well, I meant to do one at some point in 2021, but totally forgot. The List is part rearranging and part re-haul. Here it goes.

No Gli specialisti?
Gli Specialisti is in my Official Top 20 at #7,
But the Alternative Top 20 is about listing favorites which are not represented in the SWDB:s official top 20, so Gli specialisti should be eligible for your personal Alternative list.
And Il mercenario not
Correct. @makesthemovie you should definitely include any films from your own top 20 that are not currently appearing in the overall Official Top 20. (Or actually top 18 currently)
To make it simple, this is how you should compile your alternative top20:
- Make a list of around 30-40 of your favorite spaghetti westerns
- Post the first 20 on the āVote for our official top20ā topic.
- Remove these 20 films on our current top20 from your list.
- If your list now has less than 20 films add more films (once again not from the current top20)
- Post these 20 on the Alternative Top 20 topic.
- Stanton and Phil are the judges and the referees when it comes to certain titles and if theyāre allowed in the vote or not.
I Hope this helps to clarify things. And hopefully I got it right, not quite sure how it goes now with the titles that are going in and out of the top20 every now and then.

Exactly right, Bill. And as a result of the closeness at the bottom of the official top20 I now accept votes for films placed at 19 and 20 there for the Alt Top 20
And so now that Brother Stanton has updated the Official Top 20 for the year I will shortly be doing the same for our Alternative Top 20.
Now is the time to add your own list if you havenāt already or to make an update of a previous one if that has changed.
Umm, shouldnāt your Alt 20 start with these?
Also, Death Rides a Horse and Django cannot be included.
