Is this from ‘Commandos’…?
Hoping tonight to watch ‘The Sand Pebbles’ (1966), with Steve McQueen.
After a long day, and at just over three hours long, I’m not sure if I’ll make it, even though I love the film.
IMHO one of Steve’s best, and most satisfying performances, apart from ‘Papillon’, in which he was exceptional.
As with 'Le Mans (1971), Steve was always happy when close to engines, whether it be car, motor-cycle, aeroplane, or - in this case, a gun-boat.
Steve McQueen: “Hello Engine…”
‘Sand Pebbles’ revealed Steve for the brilliant actor that he was, and not the under-rated wannabe that certain critics (at the time) would have had the public believe.
McQueen was - and still is - gold…
A wonderful cast; a gripping story; Steve’s re-union with Richard Attenborough, (after 'The Great Escape); Candice Bergen, looking divine; a pre-‘Rambo’ Richard Crenna; and a magnificent score by Jerry Goldsmith…who could ask for more?
‘The Sand Pebbles’ deserves the highest accolades possible…simply because I believe - in viewing - that it was made with heart from all concerned.
A good film can elevate you, bring you down or make you swear, curse or smile.
With 'Sand Pebbles, I am on the gun-boat, and I am on dry land…such is the telling of this cinematic delight…
i just hope I can stay awake to give this master-piece the attention that it deserves…
I decided to go with a classic this evening. One of the great collaborations between Humphrey Bogart and John Huston.
Great choice…a beautiful film, with superb acting, and direction, from all concerned.
Am I correct in thinking that this master-piece was later turned in to the Spaghetti favourite that we know as ‘The Ruthless Four’?
Yep, Wages of Fear & Sorcerer remind me of it aswell.
Cheers, Dean. I really need to check these two out…
Playing the soundtrack to ‘Cool Hand Luke’, by Lalo Shifrin, has put me in the mood for ‘not communicating’ tonight…
A failure to communicate…
Knives Out is a lot of fun if you enjoy a good “whodunnit”.
I am giving Dino a shot in… The Silencers
One of the last times I ever remember a physical piece of media not working was when my brother and I tried watching Puppet Master and it broke halfway through. Super disappointing.
I watched Rampage At Apache Wells yesterday, It was not my glass of Sangria, nor Winnetou in general I guess. 2/10 ? The best probably was the Yugoslavian nature IMO (some similar locations as in Pistoleros )
Finally get the chance to continue Marketa Lavaroza after nearly two weeks of waiting on my brother. Really excellent film so far, highly recommend it, especially if you’re interested in medieval history.
Borrowed the Criterion release of this film from a friend a few years ago and it far exceeded my expectations. This is one I really need to watch again and also add to my collection at some point.
Pretty sure the version we got from the library is Criterion as well, really excellent quality. I’m half hoping they’ll have a commentary like they did for Salvatore Giuliano.
Poured myself a vermouth rosso with tonic (ok I’m already at my second, sue me), and I’m watching DEATH RAGE
Edit: wow, great flick!
Sounds like an excellent night Sebastian. I’ll be watching Raise Your Hands, Dead Man, You’re Under Arrest starring the venerable Peter Lee Lawrence tonight.
Having a DC day of it today. Watching Batman: The Long Halloween, parts 1 & 2 (Palmer, 2021) this afternoon, then going to the cinema for the first time in forever to see The Suicide Squad (Gunn, 2021).
