What Are You Listening to at the Moment?

The Hellbenders soundtrack today by Morricone.

That is such good music! Part of the reason why TH goes into my top 20. When ‘Opera of Violence’ was mentioned recently and it goes on about image and sound in some sort of harmony, you commented on this aspect of the genre. This music is perfect in this film … but it’s been knicked for another film (I’ve seen it recently), but can’t think which one … ??? any ideas?

Yes, when I get round to my top twenty…this is going in !

It is such a great score like you say, and the themes have popped up in other westerns.

But the one you are thinking of where it uses the score throughout is The Return of Clint The Stranger (A.K.A There’s A Noose Waiting For You Trinity).

Nope - not that one … got it, but havn’t yet watched it. Summat else - it’s really annoying me now  ???

Right >:(

There is quite a few which have used the themes from this one like I say, but it is remembering them…

Do you remember anything about the film; actors, director, when made e.t.c ?

If I was on the WAYeating&drinkingATM thread, the answer would be
A rather nice bottle (or 2) of the local corner-shop’s finest shiraz …
so , not a lot of recall. But before the night’s out … or choir practice beckons … I reckon to have the enigma solved. Any help from anybody out there gratefully received. Hmmmmm ??? Definately recycled for another film …?

I have heard the main themes in low budget Spaghetti westerns before, and one from T.V years ago when they used to pop up on late at night on ITV.
And the music was credited to National music or something.

When I watched Scalps recently they had themes in from Run, Man, Run (aswell as others), and is a similar kind of thing.

Tom B may be able to help us on this one I reckon.

Call in the cavalry ;D. I need to know … sleepless nights beckon otherwise.
Momentarily my choir-mistress and choir-practice call - I deviate only momentarily ;).
(… well obviously depending on how strong the wine … or the choir-mistress is ;D ;D ;D)

Drummer of Vengeance

Cheers!, thanks for that.

Is the score used through out the film then do you know ?

Thanks alk0. That’ll be the one I was thinking of. I’ve seen this (quite) recently [On vhs, as ‘An Eye for an Eye’ … the one with the incredibly violent ‘shot thru’ the eye’ cover]. Howard Hughes came to the rescue as well -
“…Morricone’s entire score was used, uncredited, in the unworthy western Drummer of Vengeance (1974).”(Quoted from ‘Once Upon a Time In The Italian West’.)
I didn’t remember that it was used throughout tho’, but I’m sure HH is better than my memory.
‘Drummer of Vengeance’ is an OK film as well.

Is your video on the something or other label called ‘Video World 2000’ (which is a pre-cert as I recall) ?

I know it’s sounds corny but when you mentioned the AKA title I recalled as I use to have this edition on VHS aswell, and they really ‘hammer’ using the main theme when there is some action about to happen/is happening.

The very same pre-cert version - exclusively distributed from a company in Leeds (‘World Video 2000’).
[edit- it says ‘Exclusive … Leeds’ on vid lable, and ‘Exclusive … London’ on the box . But both say ‘WV2000’ ??? - So … not so exclusive then!]

And back on theme - Listening to ‘Morricone Western’ compilation. All the favourites, and beautifully packaged in a book full of reprints of posters, record covers and musical emphemera. Very nice.
This is quite an erratic film. I’ve traced it under all kinds of titles. The Italian title is ‘Il giorno del Giudizio’, which is usually translated as ‘Doomsday’. It’s listed under that title in the Dutch ‘Speelfilmecyclopedie’ (don’t think there’s much need to translate this) and rated 2 stars (= avarage) out of 4, but also - in another place - under the Italian title, with a different rating (!!!): 3 stars (good) out of 4.
And then there’s also the title ‘Drummer of Vengeance’.
I have three versions of this film, Luminous’ DVD-R as Doomsday (taken from Dutch tape), tape version as Drummer of Vengeace and Italian DVD as Il giorno del giudizio. Doomsday and Drummer of Vengeance (on-screen titles) are one and same version, just with different titles. Italian cut is much longer and most scenes during the first half are in very differet order. I don’t know why export version was so completely re-cut but both version are worth owning. One of the best no-budget SWs in my oppinion. Nothing seems to indicate that the longer cut was ever dubbed in English. Both versions have same soundtrack taken from The Hellbenders.

3 out of 5 for Doomsday
3 out of 5 for Drummer of Vengeance
3 out of 5 for Il giorno del giudizio

BTW The Return of Clint The Stranger doen’t use Hellbenders score throughoutly, it also has music from other Morricone scores.

I sold my tape in 1992 for 15 U.K pounds…as I needed a Fistful of cash at the time :-\

Is this the one you are listening to?

The same - maybe somewhere down the line I’ve bought your copy of ‘An eye for an eye’, and now this as well ;)!

As I’ve said, it’s a lovely packaged cd - and a nice ‘version’ of ‘…Campaneros’ (my choir mistress’s favorite); and the magnificent ‘L’arena’ from ‘Il Mercenario’; and ‘Sonny’; and ‘Sweet Susan’; amongst others. As fine a little collection as you can get.
Any new collectors (or old ones), could do with this. And you get to look at the pictures.

[I’ve just compared my vid of ‘AEFAE’ with a Dutch dvd-r of Doomsday (which I didn’t know I’d got!! - I must get more organised!) They seem identical save for titles and subtitles. And nowhere does anybody get shot in the eye - that packaging lies somewhat methinks. Did notice a quick slip of nipple tho’, which unfortunately is no more graphically displayed in one than t’other. Still, if I can get a screengrab it’ll find a home on the appropriate thread - purely for archival and historical interest of course.]
