Hey Frank, as an admirer for The Mercenary a curious question. How came that TM has fallen down from #4 to #23 in your estimation? And My Name Is Nobody from 15 to beneath 30, while most of the others have changed only a bit.
It was very difficult to choose my new top 20, but here it is:
Old
- The good, the bad and the ugly
- Il Mercenario
- For a few dollars more
- Django
- Il grande Silenzio
- Once upon a time in the West
- Quien Sabe?
8 ) Giù la testa - Companeros
- For a fistful of dollars
- Da uomo a uomo
- Faccia a Faccia
- Blindman
- Continuavano a chiarmarlo trinità
- Keoma
- Preparati la barba!
- Navajo Joe
- Una ragione per vivere e una per morire
- Quella sporca storia nel west (Johnny Hamlet)
- Lo chiamavano trinità
New
- The Mercenary
- The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
- For a few Dollars more
- The Return of Ringo
- Django
- Once upon a time in the West
- The Great Silence
- Death rides a Horse
- California
- Face to Face
- Companeros
- The Big Gundown
- For a Fistful of Dollars
- Trinity is still my Name
- Fistful of Dynamite aka Giù la testa
- Django, Prepare a Coffin!
- A Bullet for the General aka Quien Sabe?
- Navajo Joe
- Fury of Johnny Kid aka Dove si spara di piu
- Venegeance is Mine aka Per 100,000 dollari ti ammazzo
Wow, the 2nd Trinity film over the first eh?
I also think the 2nd is better
Me too
wow i guess i must be in the minority then. i prefer the first, the 2nd was a bit too light for me, particularly the brawl in the end and the preparation for the brawl
The second Trinity is more fun!
Since my childhood I always thought that the second is funnier.
I’m with Autephex. First one is definitely better for me.
VERY interesti list. Especially with Sartana in the Valley of death, which I don't dislike. Also with Man of the East so high. Some really don't like it but I haven't seen i. I do like Man Called Noon though.
I realise Sartana In The Valley Of Death is a fairly unpopular film but I genuinely really like it, I reckon it’s a cool film! Man Of The East is just proper entertaining and I really love the end, the very end that is. And yeah The Man Called Noon is a wicked film, I love Richard Crenna.
I’ve adjusted my list so They Call Me Trinity has replaced euro western Captain Apache.
Thank you very much
I will, I just could not think of any others at that time.

Haven’t watched Sartana in The Valley of Death so far and I like the end of Man of the East too. I think on every Top 20 SW list is at least one SW which is a surprise for another.
Here is finally a complete list 8):
- Django
- The Great Silence
- Compañeros
- Keoma
- Mannaja
- Face to Face
- Massacre Time
- Requiem for a Gringo
- Django The Bastard
- Day of Anger
- Duck You Sucker!
- The Grand Duel
- Blindman
- Once Upon a Time in the West
- Death Rides a Horse
- They Call Me Trinity
- For a Few Dollars More
- Sabata
- The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
- A Fistfull of Dollars
I don’t.
But I say also thanks for the addition.
If you want Requiem for a Gringo (that’s Duel in the Eclipse, yes?) on 12, you can easily change it, by posting the complete list new for example. Nothing here is written in cement and you ,and all the others, can change your lists whenever it pleases you.
Here’s an updated top 20. Had a few changes.
1 Cemetery Without Crosses
2 The Great Silence
3 The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
4 Return of Ringo
5 The Big Gundown
6 A Bullet For Sandoval
7 God Forgives…I Don’t
8 The Forgotten Pistolero
9 Django Kill
10 The Hellbenders
11 Fistful of Dollars
12 Django
13 The Specialists
14 A Pistol For Ringo
15 Hole in the Forehead
16 El Puro
17 For a Few Dollars More
18 Johnny Hamlet
19 Black Killer
20 *
The Leone films are problematic. They are in a class by themselves. I did not include OUATITW because I do not know where to put it on this list. So I just put an asterix in the number 20 spot to hold it a place.
The really new one on this list for me is Hole in the Forehead. I love the music. I love Anthony Ghidra. And you can never kill too many monks or clerics in my book.
I did not include any Zapata’s. Bullet For the General & Tepepa are both favorites enough to make the list but I did not want to include both so I left both off instead.

Your top 20 adviser says the best place for OuTW to put is approximately at # 1, where it always fits and looks great.
OuTW at #1 is somehow the cream on any serious list.
So why hesitate, Romaine?
I’m glad Hole in the Forehead is finally on the list
Otherwise a great time for the counter (me).
- is a bit tricky to include in the poll. Maybe you mean Asterix le gallois, which is of course brillant, but hardly a SW, and as it is a comic book it is also not exactly a film (even if there are several animation films, which besides are not brillant). And maybe rather unknown in the english speaking parts of the world. Tricky
The inclusion of Hole in the Forehead on the other hand is appreciated, while the arbitrary exclusion of the Zapatas is a scandal.
I have to have a good talk with my good friend Romaine. ![]()
It’ll be in my new top 20 …soon.
They’ll be a bit of crossover with RF’s list with others too I reckon … but no *s tho’. ![]()
Haven’t find * in the databasis yet, but it sure is a promising title …
