Vote for Our Official Top 20
What’s about El Topo?
El Topo was named 3 times, but it’s surely no SW.
It’s not really. Chilian director and made in Mexico. It doesn’t have that elusive spaghetti-western ‘ethos’ either - whatever that means?
It didn’t help either that the cover called it “The Definitive Cult Spaghetti Western”.

I say take them both out. Neither are Spaghettis in any way.
I’m happy to keep in any marginal / Euro westerns but these don’t qualify on any front as far as I can see.

Done

Thanks for the work!
Shifting around the whole 125 SWs on the main page pains me after a while.

OK then, away with them.

Should we decide on a top 40 for the new list, or is maybe a top 30 enough?

Perhaps not so many people have seen 100-200 spaghettis, or whatever should be required as a minimum for making an extended list with as much as 40 films?

Do you think we should generally allow Eurowesterns to be included, Karl May, DEFA, etc?

Personally I think this could be interesting to see if any such film makes it into the list

As I said I would prefer 50 films, and only from people who have seen a great, great amount of westerns, so that they could be called “experts”. The idea would be that these “experts” should have seen most of the interesting SWs, so that the list is not influenced so much by the availability of films, but predominantly by the taste of the contributors.

The intention of such a list is not to substitute the forum’s Top 20, but to see what people think about SWs in the lower ranks in comparision to the “classics”.
At least it wouldn’t be that interesting for me, if there are mainly lists from fans who have seen beneath 200 or 250 SWs.

Well, you don’t know what people’s taste is about e.g. A Bullet for Sandoval, The Last Killer, El desperado, Bandidos if only a 3rd of the contributors have seen them, but all of them know the Leone’s very well.

Members who have seen beneath 200 SWs could still vote for the forum’s Top 20, which is open for all, also for guys who have seen only 2 dozens.

The idea to include all euro westerns is a good one (and spares us the discussion of what should be in and what not).

But how many people here have seen over 200? That’s a pretty big number for a genre that has so many hard to get films. My concern is that the votes represented would only reflect the opinions of a very small select group. Maybe 100 would be a better minimum number and would open it up to a few more people. Plus, shear numbers don’t always mean more quality. You don’t have to see every Micket Hargitay film to know they are unlikely to warrant a place in anyone’s top 40.

Anyhow, just my 2 cents worth.

Yes if 250 SWs is the requirement then probably only a handful of people could vote.

But why not make two new lists, a new top 30 for the regular viewer, and a top 50 for the real experts who have seen most films?

I’m interested in replacing the current top 20 because that one was done some years ago, a lot of films have been released since and are readily available, but only a few people have updated their lists.

Back then people probably voted mainly for what was available at that time on DVD.

my suggestion is this: we keep the top 20, which was created mostly so we have something like that for new visitors, a point of reference for newcomers to the genre, and something to discover.

i see no problem with creating a new list for the more advanced, maybe even a top 50. however, for that, i suggest we look out for some sort of automated voting system. maybe one where we enter 250 movies, 250 we agree can serve as candidates and then everyone gets 40 votes or so… i am not a good pollster, and i hate math, so i don’t know how to best do that

I’ve just checked my excel:

There are still 18 lists (out of 73) with beneath 20 films, most of them with 12 SWs, 7 of them from ex-members, 2 more have still a forum account, but haven’t visit our site since 2006.
But there are some more deleted accounts from members which have prepared a complete list.

And yes, many of the early lists are only made mainly out of the usual suspects.
But at least these lists were made to create a forum’s Top 20, and even if you delete these early lists, the 1st 20 would still be the same.

Some of the early contributors still visit the forum, but it seems they are not so keen in preparing a new list, which represents their actual taste.

If compiling a top 50 were to happen, I think that seeing a minimum of 75-100 spaghettis should be enough as anyone that has seen that many would’ve seen most of the excellent, very good & average and would be already delving into the not-so-good.
Also, a point system of 1 point between each place - 50 for 1st, down to 1 for 50th - would be good as there would be less chance for large gaps to emerge between films.

I say Blindman, Companeros, Duck You Sucker, The Great Silence should all be in the top 20.

Blindman is not in the forum’s top 20, the others are already in.

You can prepare your top 20 for this thread, it will be counted for our official voting on the main page.
(In case you didn’t knew it)

I’ll try and do that.

Actually, it is posted as hot on there trail in the top 20 page.

Yes, Blindman is hot.

Actually Blindman is also in my personal top 20.

Yeah, but I’ve only seen Blindman on the internet with surprisingly high quality (for the internet). I’m going to buy it very soon. ;D
