Don’t you mean good actors? What they do outside of playing in SW’s(or other films) shouldn’t count I think…(Though I think it’s hard not to laugh when I see Mel Gibson in a film because of his personal life) :stuck_out_tongue:

NO Earl I mean BIG SW Well Known Actors as opposed to this “El Topo” that has a cast
of total unknowns/never heard of, then the plot is too “pretentious” so overall the film

IS NOT FOR ME :cry: The Leading Actors are on screen the most and they need to be :-*

“Good Actors” are also the BEST SW Actors Eastwood/Lawrence/Nero etc as they have
proved & established their reputation/ability over & over :slight_smile:

I DISLIKE Strongly most of these RECENT DATED After 1984 “stars” except I ENJOY :

STEVEN SEAGAL JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME SHARON STONE MADELEINE STOWE

I like a bit Kevin Costner/Cherlize Theron “stars” but the rest…can go and… :cry:

Some facts.

We have now 64 voters.

SW land is clearly Leone country. Is there another genre that is so obviously dominated by one director?

GBU is on top of 29 lists. Only 2 lists are GBU free.

Followed by OuTW which is the favourite Spag of 22 members (6 were not so fond of the slow epic) .

On 31 of these lists both films are occupying the 1st 2 positions.

The other 13 pole positions go to FaFDM (8 times, but also on 62 lists), Giu la testa and a few bones are left over for Corbucci with TGS (twice), The Mercenary and Vamos a matar, Companeros!

This is in so far a surprise as Corbucci is as director an antipodean of Leone, and for his substantial contributions to the genre he should have gained more respect by the fans (only for his masterpieces, of course), in the way that there should be more disciples who prefer him on principle to Leone.

But it seems his #2 status is written for most (me too) in cement.

You are probably right. But for me, in terms of consistantly high quality, I would go for Sollima every time.

Oh, I like Sollima, but for me he’s no match for Corbucci in his best moments.

A few notes I only gave 10 because of the 30 or so I’ve seen, I can’t say that any others rise to this.

I know I’m probably in the minority here, but I think Corbucci (and the original Django) is highly overrated. Django is indeed significant beacuse it was an early, influential film, but compared to some of what came after, it pales in comparison. And nobody comes close to Leone on so many levels, technique, story, etc. The man’s films really are in a league of their own.

I’m not your opinion. Corbucci is highly underrated in the Western Movie World. His Style of directing SW Movies influenced a lot of other Moviemakers and a lot of Comics too. For me Django, Mercenario, The Great Silence are three masterpieces. Also watch his Gli Specialisti, Hellbenders, Navajo Joe and Companeros. Corbuccis Combination of Story, Music, Photography is outstanding and there is always a statement in his movies too. :slight_smile:

I have to agree with you there. Although it is paramount to sacriledge to not like Corbucci on a SW board, I have to say I’m not a big fan of him. Django was good, but I didn’t like the great silence to much and I don’t care for the Zapata westerns.

Give me Anthony Ascott any day.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say I don t like Corbucci, moreso that I think he gets a lot more critical acclaim than he deserves. I really don’ t like humor in Westerns, and that’s why I don’t care for Mercenary or Companeros. I still ahve yet to see Specialists or Hellbenders, which are more serious from what I’ve heard.

There’s humor to be found in almost every SW. Be it slapstick, black humor, or some other quirkiness.

Oh, I know. I just don’t like it when it’s too obvious. Like the way Nero acts all cute in Companeros and Mercenary. And don’ t get me started on the slapping scene in Nobody.

One exception for me… I LOVE Stranger and the Gunfighter, perhaps because it was just so over-the-top silly, yet tongue in cheek. I just think that perhaps with Corbucci, his use of humor often detracts from what could be very serious material

Excellent Top 20 RF and interesting to see Cemetary Without Crosses at number one. Also nice to see Return of Ringo placed so high. That’ll keep me and Silver happy. ;D
