Vote for Our Official Top 20

Grace speaks God - Amen my Colt

From my own experience: It’s really difficult to compile a TOP 20 list. And it only gets harder the more SW films you’ve seen

So a little over 150 SWs in the total list?

There is supposed to exist 500-600 SWs, I haven’t checked and counted all films in the database, but many of these must be pre-Fistful SWs, eurowesterns, and other films that are not really what we consider SWs?

My point is there should be more films in the total list, more films worth mentioning by someone at least if there existed 500 good quality SWs. Or have I got this wrong?

There is also the alternative list but many films from this list are mentioned on the alternative as well, no?

Maybe for practical purposes there are 150-200 films that can be considered real SWs?

Yes, you got that wrong. There were over 500 westerns made in europe but nowhere near that number could be considered good quality. The Top 20 only includes films people have voted for as their favourites. Plenty of SWs would never make anyone’s Top 20. Or Alt Top 20 for that matter.

I phrased that a little wrongly, sorry about that. I just mean films that are real SWs. Many of the 500-600 films in the database are probably other types of european westerns.

Wikipedia lists around 420 SWs after Fistful Of Dollars up to and including 1978.

I started selecting SWs rather systematically (around 2020 after 2 years collection) from this list chronologically and after reading reviews and comments on this forum eliminating all those - even before watching them or starting to watch them - which seemed too bad candidates for my own special taste.

Totally I have watched around 130+ SWs and started to watch another 20 or so and gave up, of which I now consider a little more than 80 to be good enough to get at least a 6/10 rating.

The latest addition to my Top List is The Specialists (7/10) and 39th place which is an exception in the selection process since I thought, by reading about it a few years ago it wouldn´t be worth watching, but I was wrong in that case. I doubt though there are many others that I have missed that might satisfy my taste.

My current SW Top 82 list can be found here : Bevisningen massvaccinationsstrategi och varningen till LVM - Spagetti-western ranking + location hunting -

Thanks for your input.

So we have roughly 400 real SWs, and then there are 150-200 other films. One quarter of the 400 real SWs are worth seeing, the rest are time wasters.

My opinion: You can’t really say that until you’ve seen this SW. I’ve had some positive experiences with SW that didn’t have a “good” reputation, most recently Little Rita of the West, which was very funny to watch. Give it a try!

The amount of what we consider as SWs must be over 500. Which are worth seeing and which are bores is a matter of taste.
To keep track of what I have watched and how i liked what I have watched I made an excel file with now 230 Spags (but I have watched over 300). Below a 4/10 rating films get more and more boring, but 200 of them are at least good enough to earn that 4/10, and about 100 are 6/10 or better, the quality watershed.

That’s exactly what I did—I made an Excel list. I’m up to number 387. However, I switched to a 100-point scale, which makes the order easier to follow. An 8/10 then corresponds to 75–84/100.

Ha ha, yes, and it’s common knowledge that donkeys like Fidani Spags …

There are actually at the moment 225 films in the complete list.
But I put those apart which got only one vote. As the list becomes pretty random in the lower ranks, I thought it is more clearly presented by that.

So we have 157 Spags which got at least two votes in the main list, and a 2nd list with another 68 SWs with only one vote.

Both got posted: Vote for Our Official Top 20 - #3401 by stanton

Will post my list soon.
Having so many lists is actually even better than having a simple vote with 20 pre-selected films, as this allows newcomers (and people looking for films they haven’t seen yet) to go by lists that match their taste.
