Here’s my announced list. It’s very rushed, and actually I’ve yet to finish one of the films in the list (my ranking is based on how good it’s been so far, so I will most likely change it soon). As it happens, I was stupid enough to promise I would be able to do my list before the 2022 update. So don’t take it too seriously, because it’s not well-thought out at all, but for now, here it is;
1.Once Upon a Time in the West
2.The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
3.For a Few Dollars More
4.The Big Gundown
5.A Fistful of Dollars
6.Companeros
7.Duck, you Sucker!
8.Death Rides a Horse
9.Face to Face
10.The Mercenary

14. Run Man Run

16. My Name is Nobody
17. Django

Don’t worry, it is all just fun, serious fun though …
If the not-finished film is better or worse than you thought, just post it, I will need a few days until I find the time to do the update.

So Sartana out and Run Man Run back in again. I’m glad I waited to update the Alt Top 20

What happened since the last update in the top 20?
Finally Run Man Run fell out (for now) of the top 20, probably for the first time since the voting started.
Apart from that FoD lost one place in favor of Django, as did My Name Is Nobody, which is now behind The Return of Ringo.
New in the top 50 is Dead Men Ride, for the first time. Quite interesting as this one did not get a single vote before 2010.
And The Ruthless Four is instead now out.
Well, that was a year ago, and Run Man Run is back in the top 20, mainly because Sartana lost some points.
And FoD and Django swapped their places back. And the constantly climbing Giu la testa made it now to # 11, and will maybe one day enter the top 10, and Cemetery Without Crosses is probably for the first time before Keoma.
196 lists now, the 200 is in sighting distance …

Thank you for these lists !
Taken together I guess very roughly not far from half of all SWs are listed above.
If we in an indefinite future would vote for our Top 30 or 40 or so instead (with no explicit demand for that many in a vote) the lower ranked but good rated SWs would get a more representative ranking.
That is if the whole voting and compiling process would allow that extra work
However the Alternative Top 20 fills that purpose rather well…

The idea was once there to get a top 50 from those who have watched at least 300 Spags, assuming they have watched by that every Spag of historic importance. Such a list might be interesting, but it would be a lot of work to compile it, and I somehow doubt that enough fans would like to do the thinking to compile such a list. But with say 50 voters it would mean something …

I think the toughest thing for me would be putting them in any meaningful order beyond say the top 30. After a while they are kind of interchangeable in terms of ranking. I’d be happy to do one though if it would be of interest

Yes, the first 10 are easy, the next 10 a bit more tricky, but then the differences are so small that the films become … yes, interchangeable.
But then I could at least vote for some personal favourites like They Call Me Hallelujah (easily Carnimeo’s best) or Go With God Gringo or 15 Scaffolds for the Killer.
The kind of lesser known Spags I prefer definitely to “classics” like Death Rides a Horse or Day of Anger, to name the extremes.

I remember a time, eons ago, when Sabata and Mannaja were really close to the twentieth position.
You’re decidedly against the trend on this one, on IMDb for example it is considered one of the worst.
I see among them Cry Onion, The Crazy Bunch and The Man Called Invincible, and that’s a good thing…

Really?
Worse than the sequel? Worse than his last 2?
Hard to believe, but yes it is has its dumb parts, but also the best stuff Carnimeo ever directed. The first scene is incredibly good, as good as the best scenes from Corbucci, and looks pretty similar. And it has one of the best SW scores.
And of course everyone likes one or two of those most of the others hate …

Here is my new Top 20:
Fistful of Dollars. 2) Django. 3) For a Few Dollars More. 4) The Great Silence. 5) Death Rides a Horse . 6) Bullet for the General. 7) Kill and Pray. 8) $10,000 for a Massacre 9) El Puro 10) The Dirty Outlaws. 11). A Minute to Pray, a Second to Die (uncut 119 minute version). 12) Stranger in Town 13). Johnny Yuma. 14) Blindman. 15) Boot Hill. 16) G, B, & the Ugly 17) Dead Men Ride. 18) Trade Your Pistol for a Coffin 19). Shoot Gringo, Shoot 20) I Want Him Dead
Some choices and omissions will appear eccentric. I plead guilty, but these remain the films I personally find most entertaining, or compelling.

What he said - beautifully put. I also plead insanity. Sometimes.
I tried to treat this as some kind of ranking, which may be the closest I’ll ever get to a hour with a medieval dentist.

Only 7 SWs from the Official Top 20, which means your list maybe qualifies for the 20 most deviating Top 20
Your list thus is closer to my Top 20 with 9 SWs on both of our lists. And I have My Name Is Pecos on 22 th position.
I think there should be an award for Most Deviant List, but am not sure I can really compete - I noticed one 2012 list that’s even further from the Official Top 20!
Nice that we overlap though. I find your longer lists send me in some great directions.
I wasn’t really trying to deviate - omitting GBU and OUATITW can look like gratuitous provocation, and in fact I’m deeply fond of all the films on the official list (with two exceptions, and they aren’t the above). It’s just that at present I’m finding the earlier Leones are the ones that pull me back.
Thank you! What you had to say about your selection criteria made total sense to me. The “compelling” part especially - my picks, in the end, were the ones that don’t leave me alone, and come to mind when I least expect it!
And yes, certainly the uncut 119 minute version of “A Minute to Pray …” - a film I find extremely compelling.
