[USA] Spaghetti DVD overview

In the next weeks or so I’ll post a list of American (‘Region1’) DVDs that are really worth buying. I’ll leave out everything that’s cut, full screen or whatever (or i’ll include them in a shitlist at the end)

I’ll categorize the DVDs in high - medium - low quality. High quality discs are top notch special editions, medium quality are widescreen and uncut but may lack extras or quality and low quality are okay discs but may be cut or have no extras at all etc.

HIGH QUALITY

Once Upon A Time in the West - Collector’s Edition

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly - Special Collector’s Edition

Django (2-disc)

Django

Run Man, Run

Django kill, if you live … shoot!

Mannaja

Once Upon A Time in Italy Box: A Bullet for the General, Companeros, Keoma, Texas Adios, Four of the Apocalypse

MEDIUM

The Great Silence

Ace High

LOW

Django / Django Strikes again (Anchor Bay)

under construction

I own all of the 16x9 DVD’s above, I would include these Wild East DVD’s:

Pistoleros (medium quality, probably the best it will ever be) and 16x9 anamorphic widescreen.

Ben and Charlie i do not own but supposedly it’s 16x9.

MGM:
The Sabata collection coming out oct 18th should be 16x9 anamorphic on all three films.
There are a few versions of My name is nobody around, (1 version may be 16x9 but i do not own it.)
The current fisful of dollars and For a few dollars more are both very poor.
The Leone SE’s coming out (hopefully this winter) will be worth getting.

Other:
Most versions of Day of anger / God’s gun / Mercenary are horrible
Most version of Trinity’s are horrible

I only buy and own 16x9 Spaghetti’s except for The Great Silence (which is also probably the best it’s going to get.
I am very insterested in finding 16x9 English versions of Faccia a Faccia (very good), El Mercenario (very Good), Hellbenders (I have never seen it), and Le Specialisti (pretty good).

We almost should list the U.S. Dvd’s by what company made them rather than quality.

yeah both. i think i’ll keep the good - medium - low scale and just add what company did them and i will put in links to the database entries too…

lots of work ahead

Quick questions:

Why is “The Great Silence” only a medium?

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly - Special Collector’s Edition: is this as good as the other versions (R2 etc)? DVDCompare seems to think it’s the best version:

http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=580

but I’ll trust you guys opinions.

Thanks in advance.

GBU is worldwide by MGM, and the DVDs are more or less identical with the RC1 having the edge because of the packaging and the italian mono track.

Great Silence only a medium category DVD because it hardly has any extras and the Quality is not that high as other releases. It is certainly not in the same leage as the GBU SE DVD

Sark45, Hellbenders is announced to be released by Anchor Bay next year. I hope this is actually true because it’s brilliant movie and I want to see it in good widescreen version and hopefully with some good extras. Other movies you mentioned are only available as a expensive japanese version (if you want them with english audio) and they’re region 2 dvd’s (ntsc). And the only available dvd version of the Specialist is also japanese version but it doesn’t have english audio or subtitles at all.

the hellbenders thing was confirmed to me personally by a nice girl from Anchor Bay

It’s great to see Anchor Bay getting back into SW’s. Hopefully they’ll have a few more in the pipeline.

I personally hope they make something like a Once Upon a Time in Italy box “part 2” or something.

Yes. That would be great. What should it contain? No Room To Die and A Pistol For Ringo for starters!

so where is hellbenders?

anchor bay promoted the DVD for a 2005 release and here it’s April 2006 and still the DVD has not been released? :-/

no idea. they have released take a hard ride… no word on hellbenders… i sure hope soon, although i dont have any money to buy either, especially considering wild east’s fast output pace these days

Wild East Productions, while not quite up to par with Anchor Bay or Blue Underground just yet, are putting together a pretty impressive catalogue. I’ve contacted them several times about putting together a box collection of their best titles. I think it would find distribution a lot easier than the individual titles (which are extremely obscure to the casual consumer), and help get their name out there.

By the way, this thread is a great idea and extremely helpful. Please keep updating it!

(And incidentally, www.dvd-basen.dk has a special Spaghetti Western section that is pretty useful. Until, of course, this database is at full steam. ;))

Is there a way to get a region 0 or 1 of Big Gundown?

Got it ;D

I got my region 0 big gundown on ebay from the seller DJANGO"S COFFIN it is a franco-cleef reconstruction.he did a nice job in my opinion, but then again im not one of those people who worry a lot about pristine picture quality. Also try exploited cinema or luminous video wurks.
Is there a way to get a region 0 or 1 of Big Gundown?
full steam? I am steaming already
just everyone help out and it’ll grow…

is it me or are Wild east slowing down a bit.
I hope the review copies Sebastian has are unreleased things we din’t know about yet!

no those are merely the last 3 that they released.

actually I worry more about Blue Underground

yeah, I hope a new batch of Blue Underground would show up soon… Sollimas’ pirate movie on DVD might be a funny thing to do! They seems to be lost in the italian crime movies…

is Take a Hard Ride worth looking at? I love Dragon Kelly as well as Lee Van Cleef, but I only read bad reviews of this!
