Top 10 albums of all time

To all my fellow music fans out there, how about a top 10 albums of all time. Could be of 1 genre or many. Be brave, be honest & more importantly, be ready to explain/defend your choices!

  1. Van der Graaf Generator: Pawn Hearts
  2. Pixies: Surfer Rosa
  3. Roxy Music: Roxy Music
  4. Peter Hammill: The Silent Corner & the Empty Stage
  5. King Crimson: Vrooom
  6. Pavement: Brighten the Corners
  7. Van der Graaf Generator: Godbluff
  8. Velvet Underground: The Velvet Underground and Nico
  9. Siouxsie & the Banshees: The Scream
  10. King Crimson: In the Court of the Crimson King
  11. Soft Machine: Third
  12. Pixies: Doolittle
  13. Songs: Ohia: The Lioness
14: The Mars Volta: Frances the Mute
    15: Portishead: Portishead
    16: The Beatles: "White Album"
    17: Hole: Live Through This
18: Stereolab: Transient Random Noise Bursts with Announcements
    19: Blur: Parklife
    20: Procol Harum: Home
    21: Beastie Boys: Ill Communication
    22: Sonic Youth: Evol
    23: The Pentangle: Cruel Sister

Not familiar with Van der Graaf Generator but Portishead, White Album, VU & Nico are in my running. Like Emperor Tomato Ketchup better. Hard to pick a single Blur album as their good songs are so scattered over a lot of albums. Good choices!

Never tried this, off the top of my (old) head

Poco: Pickin’ Up the Pieces
Moody Blues: In Search of the Lost Chord
Beatles: Abbey Road
Candy: Original Soundtrack
Rolling Stones: Sticky Fingers
Pink Floyd: The Wall
Enya: Shepherd Moons
Billie Holiday: The Ultimate Collection
King Crimson: In the Court of the Crimson King
Cranberries: Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We

I also like Blur’s Pavement influenced lo-fi albums blur and 13 very much. But of their Pop albums it’s clearly Parklife.

For half of the artists/bands on my list I could also have chosen another album.

The White album is maybe the best of the Beatles’ albums, but none of their 10 best songs is on it.

  29. Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed

  30. Stooges - Stooges
    & 1 for good luck
    Dave Brubeck - Take 5

That list was very hard to compile, when i tried to just list all of my fave albums i came up with list including 60 titles. I tried to narrow it as much as possible and here are 21 albums i just had to list [in alphabetical order, note that i decided to include soundtracks as well]:

Angelo Badalamenti "Twin Peaks"
At the Drive-In "Relationship of Command"
Camel "Mirage"
Ennio Morricone "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly"
Joy Division "Closer"
King Crimson "Red"
Leonard Cohen "Songs of Leonard Cohen"
Manic Street Preachers "The Holy Bible"
Marillion "Fugazi"
Mew "And the Glass Handed Kites"
Oingo Boingo "Good for Your Soul"
Pink Floyd "Animals"
Pink Floyd "The Dark Side of the Moon"
Pink Floyd "Wish You Were Here"
Porcupine Tree "Up the Downstair"
Radiohead "OK Computer"
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Blood Sugar Sex Magik"
Rush "Power Windows"
Tears for Fears "Songs from the Big Chair"
The Clash "London Calling"
The Cooper Temple Clause “Kick Up The Fire, And Let The Flames Break Loose”

No no no 23 is the new 10

You want me to add another two titles i guess? :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah 2 more out of the 60!

And hey, you really like Floyd’s Animals. A total bore for me who likes Wish You Were Here very much.

Excellent album… even if Muddy Waters hated it

A surprising entry in a top list, but still another excellent choice

I love it, some of the best Gilmour guitar parts on this one.
If i had to list two more i guess i would add those two because of memories they bring me:
Jane’s Addiction "Nothing’s shocking"
Interpol “Trun on the bright lights”

Why surprising?

Only because its not a band that I’d expect to appear on such a list. Definitely worthy though, a very unique & great album

Here’s 17 of my favorites, in no particular order

mogwai - Happy Songs for Happy People
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Smashing Pumpkins – Siamese Dream
Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow
Minutemen – Double Nickels On The Dime
Sonic Youth – Daydream Nation
Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables
Dinosaur Jr. - You’re Living All Over Me
Rage Against the Machine – self titled
Captain Beefheart – Trout Mask Replica
Marilyn Manson – AntiChrist Superstar
Father Yod and the Spirit of ’76 – Contraction
Howlin’ Wolf - Moanin’ in the Moonlight
The Doors – self titled
Mudhoney - Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge
Underworld - dubnobasswithmyheadman
Orbital - In Sides

The White album is maybe the best of the Beatles' albums, but none of their 10 best songs is on it.

Agreed, but some are close.
I knew I had to include one. You chose this one so I went for the later one, but any one between Rubber Soul thru Abbey Road are great for me.

Yes, they are all good.

One of the best is Magical Mysterey Tour even if it is not exactly an official album. And I think that the new Let It Be version makes out of their weakest LP (after 65) another winner.

Yessir! Ka-koo Kachoo
Haven’t heard the new Let It Be. I’ll probably just stick with my lp’s as they are still in reasonably good shape.
