The Last Western You Watched?
Support Your Local Sheriff
Another family viewing in my quest to brainwash the clan into becoming western fans. This one is harmless fun and has some genuinely funny moments. James Garner is always good value and it’s got Walter Brennan and Bruce Dern too for good measure.
So how is the brainwash going with the family then ?

Very well so far, I’m delighted to say.

I’m using a two pronged approach. First, getting them to watch light hearted westerns which are more likely to appeal to young girls. (Hence, Providence, McClintock, Support Your Local Sheriff etc) I will then ‘up the ante’ and introduce better quality westerns once their resistance levels are reduced. Second, I’m subliminally filling their heads with Spaghetti theme tunes by playing them constantly in the house. This second prong is working particularly well. I have recently witnessed my eldest girl humming the GBU theme to herself and my 2 youngest singing ‘A Gringo Like Me’ from Duello Nel Texas.
Of course, the Child welfare agency could be descending on me at any time charging me with emotional torture but I’m willing to risk it for the greater good.

Interesting approach, and keep up the good work !

Saw Return of Halleluja last night. I am not very fond of these Halleluja-movies and this one too won’t make my top-list but all in all it was pretty enjoyable. Better than many other of the slap-stick spaghetti westerns but not by very much. Recommended if you like this stuff.

Return emphasizes too much on the stupid slapstick comedy.

-Wow, what a great film, I’ll write something more on it’s own topic soon.

True.

Sabata

Yes I know that a lot of people consider the original movie somewhat of a classic. Didn’t catch me though so I wasn’t as ‘hurt’ by the sequel

Brescia: Cry of Deathhttp://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Carogne_si_nasce (dvd-r)
-One of the worst I’ve seen. Utterly boring, cheaply made and poorly directed film. Talky film with not much of action until the very end. Gordon Mitchell in the supporting role is the only good thing in it.

Received an American dvd of White Fang to the Rescue last week and decided to watch it this weekend. The screen quality and audio were as bad as I thought they would be, but the movie itself exceeded my expectations. It’s pretty rough for a kid friendly movie. Of course it has terribly cheesy moments of drama, but there’s also mild animal cruelty, fist fights, shooting and cleavage. White Fang fighting a bear was hilarious. Some big names in this one crank up the entertainment level: Maurizio Merli who took over Franco Nero’s job, Henry Silva as the local bad guy and Donal O’Brien as one of Silva’s moronic henchmen. Naturally the kid is annoying, but you have to accept that with a movie like this. White Fang was portrayed by one of the best actors of this production, some German shepherd. Apparantly they couldn’t find a (good enough) white wolf. I think Jack London’s works have seen worse transfers to the big screen, but it’s nothing special either. Just a mediocre movie that will probably do the trick for the average spaghetti western fan, due to the afore mentioned points of interest.
Yesterday I watched the Grand Duel (Wild East dvd) again. The transfer isn’t great, but it’s very decent. The movie starts out like your average spaghetti western. However, as soon as the Saxon brothers make their entrance in the flick (Marc Mazza shooting the old man in cold blood), it gets about a dozen times more interesting. Horst Frank is great in this one as the most intelligent of three brothers, having to deal with his idiot brothers - one an incompetent marshal and the other a gay psychopath- and of course Philip Vermeer and Sheriff Clayton. The murder plot was woven nicely into the movie. I think this movie has all the cliched elements of the spaghetti western fitted into one movie in a coherent way. The movie never gets boring and the cast shows a nice assembly of talent. I rated it 7/10 the first time and I think i’ll stick with that.

Zeglio: Relentless Fourhttp://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Quattro_inesorabili%2C_I (dvd-r)
-early sw with not much spaghetti feel. Starring Adam “Batman” West and Claudio Undari. Not that special film but worth watching.

JOHNNY WEST starring Dick Palmer.

Standard full screen print quality (pretty poor in bits) which never helps a Spaghetti, and sometimes has less serious ‘buddy’ style elements to, then switches to mean mode.

Director Gianfranco Parolini shows an early interest in gadgets, which were common place in his future films.

HONDO (1953, John Farrow, John Ford)

Nice, honest Wayne western with a good script, avoiding most macho clichés and sermonising most latter day Wayne movies suffered from.

The R2 special collector’s edition has a 1,33:1 aspect ratio but vibrant colours, little print damage and even a DD 5.1 soundtrack (which is fine, but don’t expect too much surround activity). The only problem is that the film was partly shot in 3-D and that those shots have a different colour palet (and some action directed straight to the camera).
Otherwise: great film.
They defenitely don’t make 'm like that anymore.

Definitely one of Wayne’s best I think. And the 3D stuff is only noticeable on occasion. As for the aspect ratio, I’m not sure it was ever shot in widescreen format but am happy to be educated on the subject.

1,33:1 is the correct aspect ratio. Widescreen became the usual standard from 1954 onwards.

I also would say that Hondo is a good and highly enjoyable one by Wayne, but not one of his best.

“Rio Grande” (1950)
-John Wayne

Part of John Ford’s Cavalry Trilogy. One of the greats.

Mollica: Born to Killhttp://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Nato_per_uccidere (dvd-r)
-Nice film. Gordon Mitchell is very good as a anti-hero. Great music and atmosphere. Recommended.

I saw “Töte Amigo - Quien Sabe?” yesterday. Maybe one of the best in spaghetti western I´ve seen. I expected a stronger soundtrack (Morricone&Bacalov),but it is not bad, reminded me a little bit of “Companeros” sometimes.

Welcome to the Forum, Amigo.
Saw you’re from Hamburg.
There are more guys from Germany around here, so you won’t feel lonely.
Of course, QUIéN SABE ? is an excellent western.
Don’t remember the soundtrack, though.
