Rather good American Western (been watching a lot of them lately). Seems to have been the inspiration for Harris’s Appaloosa. With Fonda and Quinn as lawmen for hire. Richard Widmark as a drunken Sheriff is quite good but of-course the more white hatted character to Fonda’s anti hero role.
I never got around to finishing it. Sort of lost interest but I did get pretty far into it. It seemed to me like a film that would have been made better during the sound era. Which of course it was.
But I think the simplicity of the western genre was better suited for silent films. So I think I’ll be seeing more soon. As it just so happens my Video store has a small selection of old silent westerns. Will see how it goes.
Just watched Django …Uuh sorry Shango with “Mr. Roll’n’Shoot” Anthony Steffen ;D
I liked the idea with the maniac confederate office who cannot accept the end of the war and together with his troop and mexican bandits he terrorizes a village. The beginning was creepy with Anthony Steffen imprisoned in a cage but don’t worry he soon can escape. I watched the Koch Media DVD which of course is a fine product with good quality.
Plot: IMDB
A gang of claim jumpers is infesting the territory, gaining ownership of undermanned mining operations through extortion…and leaving no live witnesses. But one victim, quick-drawing gambler Luke Cromwell, escapes. Meanwhille, Marshal Lightnin’ Tyrone is also after the gang; recovering from one raid, he meets femme fatale Opal Lacy, who may not be healthy for him to know. When Luke, now calling himself the Silver Kid, joins forces with Marshal Tyrone, the gang had better watch out …unless something drives a wedge between the new allies.
Phantom’s Review: I like Audie Murphy, he made some good movies, but this one is kind of mediocre. Certainly not a BAD movie, just…kind of forgettable.
2)“Money, Women and Guns” (1959)
-Jock Mahoney
Plot: IMDB
. Just after making a large gold discovery, an old prospector is ambushed and killed by three masked men but manages to kill two of his attackers before he dies. He also manages to scribble out a will, which is given to detective “Silver” Ward Hogan, who is hired to track down the legitimate heirs and to try to find the third murderer.
Phantom’s Review: This was a fun movie (and a great title) Plenty of action and a good story. The only thing that didn’t really work was the love story sub-plot. Mahoney and co-star Kim Hunter had no real chemistry between them. Other than that this was a fine western adventure.
turned out to be a nice lil film to go in the sartana series…wasnt sure i was going to like it after the whole putting out the lit dynamire with a canteen of water after throwing it in the air and shooting a hole in it…but it got better…solid entry…even without garko…could have done without the bread gun though…lol
Plot: IMDB
Shadrach Jones, ex-Texas State Policeman, has a ruthless determination to find and kill the man who shot his brother in the back and stole the money with which he was to buy a ranch for he and Shadrach. At the saloon-hotel ran by Adelaide, Shadrach is convinced that one of the cowhands on a cattle drive by Captain McKellar to Montana is the killer, and he takes the trail-herd boss job to identify the man. McKellar preaches to Jones that he should forget revenge and let the law of retribution take care of the killer. Shadrach’s hard driving of the men and his hunt for the killer makes him bitterly hated, and his retribution quest ends in a manner he has not anticipated.
Phantom’s Review: Fun little “B” movie. Plenty of action and a murder mystery to solve. Not a bad way to spend a lazy afternoon.
Continuing in my American Western kick, I decided to watch this highly acclaimed Ford Western. Great film! Well made, well shot, wonderful story, and a surprisingly competent action finale with Yakima Canutt doing things I couldn’t even dream of doing.
Not really a western but watched The Electric Horseman. About a guy who used to be a rodeo star and is now only doing commercials, goes on the run and steals a horse after he finds out the animal is being mistreated…
Pretty pointless overlong movie starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.
Having just seen Angel and the Badman, I can say pretty confidently it’s defiantly one of the worst Westerns I’ve seen. Half the time it seemed like an advert for Mormons and the ending was truly awful with a neat sidesteps that managed to stop the newly “converted” Wayne into killing someone. There are some nicely photographed cattle scenes and an interesting premise but neither make it worth watching and the trite romance verges on becoming a pastiche of itself. Avoid at all costs.
