I enjoy those old westerns although I’m not really a fan of the “singing cowboy” a la Gene Autry. I’m more of a Buster Crabbe, Jim Bannon(Red Ryder), Lash Larue, etc., fan. Let’s crank up the club!
I’m a fan of tose old westerns as well.
Tonight, I went for Taste of Vengeance.Pretty damn good. Great character developement hich made the characters more believable. Kinda lost the Spaghetti fell towards he end but all go stuff
The Great Silence…a great film indeed.
Watched some episodes of DEADWOOD. IMO a damned good TV Serie. Why the fuckin’ Hell they cancelled it after 3 seasons?
I’m not a singing cowboy fan either although I still watch Roy Rogers on occasion for pure nostalgia value and because I like Gabby Hayes so much. Normally though I prefer the others you mention along with Ken Maynard, Johnny Mack Brown, Bob Steel and the like.
Rewatched Sartana’s here trade your pistol for a coffin. Not on par with the classic Sartanas with Garko, but still a great one. The finale is pure class.
Agreed. Roy, Gabby, and Trigger have a class by themselves. They were Saturday morning TV when I was a kid.

-this one starts promising as the bad guys start to hunt Ivan Rassimov in the deseert, especially one of the bad guys is wonderful character, sweating, fat, corrupted sheriff. Reminded me a lot of Orson Welles in Touch of Evil. Too bad that this character is killed off during the 20 first minutes and the whole plot changes to Shane like gunfighter and the farmer family plot. Riccardo Garrone has nice role which is a mixture of comical character and Gilbert Roland type mystical gunfighter.[/quote]
Just watched this one as well - on the back of having raved about Garrone’s No Graves on Boot Hill recently. This isn’t as good, but still kept me entertained for an hour and a half as I transferred my VCO vid of it (as The Outlaw Rider) to disc.
Brother Bill pretty much nails it with his comments - Riccardo’s character is a good blend of light-hearted lothario crossed with Gilbert Roland (but with an extra dash of debonair English comedy ladies-man, Terry Thomas, I reckon).
This film maybe suffers a bit from trying to do too much. The murdering is sub-contracted down from Marlowe the Railway man, through to Logan and his gang, and then to a bunch of Mexican bandits. But it’s still ok.
Besides this there’s there’s a more personal feud that is ongoing betwixt Ivan Rassimov’s Johnny and Ken Wood, who’s great as the relentless, never-giving-up, cold-eyed bounty killer, Stack. There’s a bit of revenge for a murdered family, the obligatory barroom brawl, some good supporting characters (including a stereotypically highly-organised German as a blacksmith cum horse-dealer, and there’s a couple of old scrotes thrown in for good measure.
Weisser’s review is quite a bit off the mark as he tells us “…Johnny” (and here he’d have us believe he is played by Wood rather than by Rassimov) is recovering from a mysterious gunshot wound …" - well all I can say to Mr. Weisser is - maybe if you watched the film it wouldn’t be so mysterious! In respect of the family, Weisser gets it wrong yet again. Sally, played by Isabella Savona, is the daughter - not a widowed mother, and in this role as the love-struck pubescent, she shines as a pouty lipped lolita - all pigtails and heaving bosom - but will she get her man before Stack does? And will he give her that pearl necklace (honestly … you lot - he did buy her one after all ;D)? All in all, not a bad first effort from the man, and a good couple of ‘pain in the neck’ revenge killings to finish with!
Not a pain-in-the-neck sw though, so … 3.5 out of 5 from this fan.
Haha. Well, I DID say I was embarassed to admit it… ![]()
Because it was too expensive to make. Same thing with HBO’s “Rome” series… they make an incredible show, and can’t afford to keep making it.
I LOVe Deadwood! Great show. I have all three seasons. I haven’t watched any episodes for some time but I should soon. I thought that HBO said that they don’t cancel shows or something. Well, those liars have cancelled Carnivale (Great show!), Rome (same) and Deadwood.
I think Rome wasn’t necessarily intended to go on beyond these 2 seasons.
The reason for canceling Deadwood was simply a massive loss on quotes. And even HBO has to earn a few bucks with their shows.
true but … I dunno. I just really like those shows.
Last western I watched was Shoot, Gringo…Shoot!. Good Spaghetti Western. Really liked the music and why don’t they use the lyric song in the film? Ilike the tune with the lyrics. Even a different Corbucci makes a good movie. But why did he make all those comedy spaghs after? Inoticed they used some ofthe big band/caribbean sounding music from this film and Three Musketeers.
Note that the film is directed by Bruno Corbucci, not Sergio
Watched two spaghettis during the last few days:
BOOT HILL
Rewatch. Slightly better than I remembered. Great opening scene (cross-cutting between Hill, stalked outside the circus tent and the acrobats inside), good Woody Strode, silly baby doll, weak villain, and I found Hill’s character not very convincing: first he’s running from, then he’s looking for the baddies. I know he’s wounded first and Hill after all, so supposed to be unflinching, but still … A Review will be published on Fistful of Pasta.
DEATH SENTENCE
Finally.
Interesting, beautifully made, but doesn’t fulfill all its promises
Review to follow
It’s sad that Deadwood ended after three seasons.
Watched an other TV Western : Broken Trail with Robert Duvall. It’s not very SW like and reminded me somehow on Open Range. It’s quite different to Deadwood but I enjoyed it very much.
I liked Broken Trail too. Good story and very well made
I liked it too. Very well made indeed. Especially for a made for TV movie. I hated Comanche Moon though. The dialogue was TERRIBLE! Very cliched too.
Watched The Specialists.Great spaghetti western. Very fast gunplay. Filmed with the hero in weird positions which added a certain edge to the gunfights. Many have the hero on the ground blasting as fast as he can. Love how straight forward it is.
I saw Django the Last Killer and thought it was excellent, I think the two Eastman films are Wild Easts best double feature.
