The Last Movie You Watched? ver.2.0

I agree. Stanton expresses his opinions but he never insults other members or attacks their character. Aldo, on the other hand, has resorted to personal attacks and it’s sad to see on the forum.

Without a doubt, one of the best Bond films. Roger Moore made the role his own in this one. His introduction in Live and Let Die was excellent but for those who were used to Connery, he hadn’t yet managed to own the character. That completely changed with this one.

Moonraker, however, is one the worst Bond films for me. Such a shame considering it starts out so well but that space stuff was completely out of place in a Bond film. I would like to see a remake closer to the original novel someday.

Despite being silly SPY is one of the top Bonds. It is the late Sir Roger’s personal favourite and I see why.
And MOONRAKER? Well you nailed it, started out well and went down hill. The original novel plot of a rocket being launched at London could be modernised in this age of terrorism.
The SPY WHO LOVED ME theme tune Nobody does it better is a fan fare to Roger Moore.

The man is just frustrated I suspect and I don’t blame him with what the world is going through right now.

I know where you are coming from Andy. for the majority we don’t know what is happening in our personal lives. We don’t know if something bad has happened Aldo.
As example I had to evacuate the house last night cause of a gas build up.
I just feel frustrated and bad feelings should not be vented in name calling on the forum. It is just causes bad feelings nobody wants. Aldo’s reaction was a bit OTT in my opinion but Stanton’s last remark sounded a bit of a snub. Doesn’t let Aldo off the hook. Rudeness was displayed by both parties in my opinion.

I also believe it is just Stanton’s manner of talking. He is direct and straight to the point in his opinions and reviews. Even when they are baffling.
We have strong and interesting personalities in Stanton and Aldo.
Anyway let’s draw a line in the sand on it. Still if anyone has a beef to dish out do it in private. As a community let’s keep it together. :+1:

I don’t always agree with @stanton (sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t, and no I don’t get his rating system), but I find his strong opinions allways interesting and worth considering (Could he have a point? Did I misjust the movie?). I haven’t seen Ben Hur in more than two or maybe even three decades (I have rewatched the chariot race from time to time) and his rejection of the movie makes me want to revisit it. I remember it as an entertaining, if superficial piece of Hollywood film making - albeit with a ridiculous ending - but I might be wrong.

I prefer EL CID to BEN HUR. I find it less superficial Hollywood. Despite Charlton Heston playing a Spaniard. If I can accept Sean doing it I can accept Charlton doing it!!

@stanton’s weird rating system is utterly demented  and he’s definitely a cantankerous old sod (or is it that his rating system is cantankerous and he’s a demented old sod?) BUT he’s as knowledgeable as they come with regard to European cinema and I find myself in agreement with his tastes in movies far more often than not. He’s definitely not a troll, in fact tbh @aldo as someone who knows neither of you personally but knows the SWDB personas the pair of you present on here very well, I’d say you’re both very similar (that’s meant as a compliment to you both btw, even as it maybe recognises your shared… let’s not say “intractability”, let’s say “enthusiasm” and “strength of opinion”). You’re like Spock and McCoy (and of course in that analogy @Admin is like Kirk, @Phil_H is like Sulu and @AvatarDK is like Uhura :slightly_smiling_face:). So boldly go and kiss and make up, you pair of tarts. :+1:

Who knew that someone not liking Robocop would cause such commotion?

Top Secret! 1984

Until recently I’ve never heard of this Zucker/Abrahams’ parody so I would guess it is not that known as their other childs - but who knows, maybe it differs by country. This one deals mainly with WW2 and spy movies. Can’t really say what I would think about it if I’d seen it alongside with the other comedies of similar approach (that means as a teenager) - I mean, stuff like Naked gun/Hot shots is still watchable, but I certainly wouldn’t praise it like back in those days. And it is similar with this one. Lot of stuff seems somewhat weird or cringy on the other hand there’s still a lot to enjoy. Some scenes could be hilarious if thought through more and done right (spies disguised as a cow) and some aim more accurately. There’s one particular scene towards the end shot in a whole under the water and that is a must watch (especially for us, who love westerns). 6/10

Definitely not, only one was rude.

And which remark was a snub?
That he judged a film by only 5 minutes? Well that was nothing more than a statement with no hidden intention.

Btw you did delete one comment about that, why did you delete that?

Ha ha, no we are definitely not.

He is very different from me, which is ok, and even if I always knew that he does not like what I write here (he seems to hate half of the world anyway), I have actually not real an idea why he went through the roof in that case here, for these few imo hamless remarks.

And anyway, and to repeat myself, everything I write here and elsewhere is just a subjective opinion of me, it actually can’t be anything else than subjective, as there ain’t no objectivity in art.
So if I find Robocop totally boring, than it is just a fact, but only one which applies for me, and I know that I’m in the minority here, so what’s the problem?
I’m not offended if other people despise films I like, on the contrary I think such is refreshing.

I would add The Producers and High Anxiety. His later films are indeed not that funny anymore.

Hi.

“Well, you haven’t watched the remake, so you don’t know how it is …”

I found the remark rude or I should say condescending, even though you probably didn’t mean it that way. That remark could be interpreted as a snub.
I deleted the previous remark Stanton because I thought it sounded like I was justifying Aldo’s response whole heartedly. And that wasn’t my intention.

I was actually totally surprised by his response , all in all it seemed to me just normal discussion about movies to that point, nothing out of the ordinary.

Anyway this incident is a good example of a “Mountain being made out of a mole hill.”
But if I have been a pain in the arse Stanton I’m sorry.

No you wasn’t, don’t worry.

Well, actually not for me.
As I said it was only meant as a statement, and if someone else had said that to me, even in a heated debate, and that wasn’t one for me up to that point, I had only answered something like “that’s true”.

That is fair enough for me Stanton, I would probably have replied in a similar manner.
“You don’t know how it is,” where I live it is like saying you don’t have a clue. Minus the expletives. Which is how Aldo took it.

 That’s exactly what aldo would say, I reckon! You’re like peas in a pod. George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. :grinning:

Bear in mind also that Stanton is offering his opinion on these English-language sections of the forum in a second language. Sometimes, the English of our many non-English-speaking contributors, whilst flawless, can also lack a touch of nuance here and there, and come across as a bit cold as a result. I promise you, if I tried to make any point whatsoever in Deutsch, it would come across as very fucking bizarre indeed! As I’ve always said: Wenn es um Spaghetti Western geht, bestellt mein Taxifahrer den Fischsalat! :slightly_smiling_face:

Anyway, shall we have a go at getting back on track, gentlemen? Danke! :+1:

You are completely right Asa and I was trying to explain the lack of nuance without making myself sound condescending or make terribly stereotypical comments regarding languages.
Any how I am not critical of use of a foreign language, I couldn’t do it on here!
Anyway I wouldn’t want to be in a cab when the driver’s been eating fish salad!!
