The Last Movie You Watched? ver.2.0

Well, you haven’t watched the remake, so you don’t know how it is …

I ought to know better by now than attempt a reasonable conversation with you.

This ‘Know it all’ attitude you have makes you sound like a smart-ass teenager contradicting and condescending for your own pissy amusement.

Really I don’t give two fucks about your ‘marking system’ or your taste in films … nor is it your reason for being on this site - you are an attention seeking, energy zapping troll.

And the SD award of the 2020 goes to…

I find stanton’s movie ratings hilarious (at least some of them), no need for shootouts. But @stanton I would really like to know how would you rate Robocop 3, which is abysmal experience to watch. (Around 2 or 3/10 in my book.)

’SHUTTER ISLAND’ (2010)

In 1954, a U.S. Marshal investigates the disappearance of a murderer who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane.

Directed by Martin Scorsese, and starring Leonard DiCaprio, in what I think is one of his very best performances, the film is a psychological roller-coaster ride from start to finish. It is not an easy watch, but easy isn’t always an option we get when viewing a complex work of art.

I could easily watch this film a second, third, fourth, and fifth time…it’s one of those films that confounds, astounds, and reveals its secrets layer by tension-filled layer…

Aww fuck, now I’ve got to watch it. That sucks. Will probably watch Robocop 2 en route just to alleviate the pain to some extent, I’ve heard the second installment isn’t so bad.

It is worth watching just to see ROBO versus android ninja Outomo.

Very much so, Ali. I never used to have much time for DiCaprio, but the years have proved me wrong. In ‘Shutter Island’, he is exceptional in the main part, ably assisted by a superb cast including Sir Ben Kingsley, Mark Ruffalo, the late Max Von Sydow, and Ted Levine.
A great story, a great cast, great direction, and more than enough plot twists to compete with Agatha Christie.

Perhaps slightly reminiscent of the more recent ‘Stonehearst Asylum’, which also starred Sir Ben Kingsley…?

Spot on!!
I could see Hitchcock making this film if someone had given him the script circa 1965. I love a good psycho drama. I think SHUTTER ISLAND harkened back to a bygone era. I liked it even more because it was nothing like any other film made by ‘Lil Martin’.

Sorry Aldo but that is out of line and not in the spirit of this forum.

Stanton has strong opinions and he is entitled to them. I may or may not agree with all of them but that is not the point. We’re here to discuss stuff and differing views make it more interesting. I for one have often questioned my own take on a film as a result of reading Stanton’s views. I don’t always change my opinion, in fact I rarely do, but that probably says more about me than him. The point is we all disagree on stuff but the reason I’m still on this forum (it’s the only one I frequent anywhere) is because we don’t descend to abuse or name calling.

But beyond that, your remarks are just uncalled for. Stanton has been a member here for a very long time and I can state for certainty that he is definitely not a troll. Believe me, we’ve had a few and he ain’t one.

Well I disagree, strongly.

The level of arrogance displayed and the seeming inability to join in and actually adhere to ‘the spirit of this forum’, is exactly what I’m referring to.

This comes up time and again about us all having differing opinions which should be respected - I have no problem whatsoever with that ideal. I do however have a problem with dismissive arrogant retorts, which are also contrary to what you’re saying.

Also, I’d like to say that longevity is not a reason or excuse for carte blanche behavior.

So I used the word ‘Troll’, and that’s my opinion of what’s going on here - disruptive, rude, arrogant and attention seeking.

And you don’t see that it is actually you who is acting like this now?

I’m responding to Stanton’s comments … so how is that arrogant?

THE SPY WHO LOVED ME. The late great Sir Roger’s favorite Bond. After another viewing my opinion wavers.
It comes across as the silliest film in the franchise.

Moonraker makes more sense. They’re essentially the same story only Moonraker - in it’s plotting and in the setup of Drax’s organisation - makes sense.

TSWLM: How does Stromberg plan on settling under the sea when he’s nuked the surface that would contaminate and destroy the ecosystem?

At least Drax thought his plan through. The only thing daffy about Drax is how he got that space station in orbit without anyone seeing it. At least they have the cloaking device mentioned in the script.

The humour levels in TSWLM and MOONRAKER reach the series zenith of daftness consistently (everything with Jaws in both apart his first scene is a joke).
THE SPY WHO LOVED ME villain is killed of in a cold and personal fashion by Bond that doesn’t fit with the tone of the rest of the film.

Absolutely not but that’s not what I meant and not what I said. Trolls don’t last long here and the fact that Stanton has been around so long suggests to me that he isn’t one. Having strong opinions doesn’t make you a troll. At least not in my book.

So I guess this is where my distinction sits.
Saying a film is “totally boring” is clearly an opinion even if stated as a fact. And, critically, it is a statement directed at the film.

Saying “you are an attention seeking, energy zapping troll” is an insult and directed at the person not their argument. It may be your opinion but it’s directed at the person and that’s different.

The first statement may cause disagreement but the second can only cause offense and that’s why I said I thought you were out of line.

2/10 for that, at least it made me chuckle …

Robocop 1987

I haven’t seen it in a very long time similarly as other verhoevens and ratings oscillating from absolute trash to regular trashy scifi to cult classic made me curious to which group of extremists I would belong. Or maybe it would be total average for me. But as the film started I was hooked and stayed until the end. I would even say a groundbreaking scifi picture for its time and very well made. Lot better than the sequels including sterile remake/restart from 2014. I also like the idea of using commercials throughout the movie - probably first time ever. Few sfx ought to be outdated even back then (fall of the villain from skyscraper in the end, a shot of ED launching a rocket) but otherwise whole movie looks visually fantastic. There’s one scene near the end I wouldn’t mind someone cut out from the movie and that is Robo destroying ED with that fancy sniper rifle Boeddicker brought on him in a first place. The scene looks and feels like someone has been adding too much chedar into his burgers and forecasts what will come in the next installments. 8/10
