The Great Silence / Il grande silenzio (Sergio Corbucci, 1968)

On the Japanese disc to Shoot Gringo Shoot ! there is a trailer to The Great Silence in the following ratio:

Iā€™m just hopping in here without reading most of the earlier posts in this thread. Am I to ever expect a 1:85 cleaner release of this?

That french dvd looks greatā€¦

Sure does, but once again: it has no English audio, only French + Italian (+ French subs, which might help, French is much easier to read than to understand)

Sounds like a good idea for a projectā€¦

That sounds like a good idea, I have the North American DVD, pretty bad video and audio and I donā€™t believe itā€™s 16x9, but itā€™s such an enjoyable film it doesnā€™t really bother me. However, if I could get one that looks like the French release, I would get that in a heartbeat.

But has it italian subs, because that would be even easier for me, as i know spanish. But french is a language that i can ā€œreadā€, partly at least, after learning spanish. But french people speaking is a whole other thing.
Still need to get this one on DVD, but at least i already saw it in a cinema once. In german though

I have a question. Did Klaus Kinski dub himself for the English release?

I just watched the English scenes available on youtube. I donā€™t think this is Kinskiā€™s own voice.

I have the Region 1 DVD, not the best quality but still very enjoyable. I actually really like the English dubbing. Whoever dubbed Kinski did a good job I think.

ā€œā€¦but Iā€™m not losing my temper, of that Iā€™m sure.ā€

I do not mind the english dub.

I watched this movie a week agoā€¦and had it sink in a bit. Cant say Iā€™m thrilled, however. I found the acting of the main character to be rather weak and unconvincing (I was actually not that sad when he died). His personage lacked depth and credibility, and felt like a cheap version of the stereotypical silent heroes which Clint typecasted so well (although this one obviously didnā€™t even had a few lines in stark voice to draw)

The high level of violence is not as well executed as in for example Django. Then thereā€™s other elements which made it not live up to its reputation for me - the filmwork is sloppy at times, unprofessional even (for example when the lens condenses at one moment due to temperature differences). Maybe the rough camerawork, incorrect use of color filters, zooming / out of focus bits, and the unrealistic lighting (inside) add atmosphere for some, but for me it just appeared poorly executed.

I will only briefly comment on the storyline - since I had a hard time to follow it. Itā€™s not plainly confusing, neither stereotypical in an iconic fashion. The movie felt like the separate scenes were put together in the end by someone not as talented, or there was a general lack of footage to choose from resulting in the current sequence of events.

Kinkiā€™s role saves the day for the movie in my view, but still as a whole it just feels very low-budget with average acting, average story and average execution - with one excellent actor to make it above-average as a whole. Maybe the snow-theme also did not help - it does change the atmosphere I so got used to with westerns, I guess. Morricones music is in parts good, but in many occasions just very standard and not that dissimilar from ā€˜typicalā€™ 50ā€™s or 60ā€™s movies without making it a homage, however.

Iā€™ll probably throw up some fuss, since I see the movie is quite popular here - but it was my first major disappointment after watching a ton of highly ranked movies (Dollar trilogy, Django, even My name isā€¦ etc).

However if I remain critical, the movie is just not put together in the same high quality manner as many others that are rated as high as this. Too add to the misery I also found the dubbing to be poorly done to the point of being disturbing - while usually I have grown quite tolerant to a bit of desync by now

Always a good idea to ā€œthrow up some fussā€. The movie is indeed quite popular amongst SW fans, but that doesnā€™t mean that everybody has to hail it. And at least everyone has his share of ā€œclassicsā€ he for whatever reasons does not like.

Interesting views on the film, even if I see it mostly completely different.

Yeah Iā€™m not a big fan of TGS either but that already has been well documented on this board. Its not that I donā€™t think its a good movie, Iā€™m just not a fan. We are in the minority though.

defocus & CDM, you & me the devil make 3. I, also agree with you on this movie. Do I like it, yes. Is it all others hail it to be, no for me. It was one of my first posts here stating so. It has grown for me since but is still low on my top 20 list. The lack of good video quality at times does deter from me enjoying this movie as others do. We are in the minority but that minority it seems is growing. I do hail Corbucci for going against the grain though.

Even though the film isnā€™t my cup of tea I still gave it a favorable review.
