Spagvemberfest 2019

Hmm, must have been something to do with “…” in the name causing it. I noticed the same problem with films like “…E alla fine lo chiamarono Jerusalem implacabile” and “…E così divennero i tre supermen del West”. @Admin??

SPAGVEMBERFEST 2019: DAY 11
Hm. From an unexpected little run of okay(ish, all things considered) pictures, I’m now taking on one of the “comedy” spags - or rather, a mediocre facsimile of another, better “comedy” spag. Yup, it’s Now They Call Him Sacramento (Balcázar, 1972), aka For Copyright Reasons They Definitely Don’t Call Him and His Mate ‘Trinity and Bambino’, Even Though It’s Bloody Obvious What’s Happening Here. Probably.

I’ve got a bad feeling about this one.

The Belle Starr Story (Wertmuller / 1968)

image

Another unopened Wild East and another film I hadn’t watched for many years. Last time I saw it was on one of those cheapo box sets last.caress is currently labouring through. This time the picture quality was much better. Sadly, that wasn’t nearly enough to overcome the god-awfulness of the film. It’s always clear that this one was cobbled together with unconnected footage but the voiceover narration and flashback heavy nature of it makes the whole thing tedious in the extreme.

Not one I’ll be going back to any time soon. Don’t be tempted last.caress. Life’s too short.

I’ll qoute myself from the film’s thread (2018):

Last night another woman’s take on spaghetti western; The Bell Starr Story . I watched it for the first time in a very bad copy during Spagvemberfest, and last night for the first time in good picture quality. And, ahem…, what a film.

Yup. That was shit.

Likely, but it used to work before… annoying. Can’t really look into it much right now because I am travelling all month

Had to pause Spagvember today to help my dad with some stuff around the house. Resuming the challenge tomorrow.

  1. Forgotten Pistolero - Every spagh deserves a second chance (except for Fat Brothers Of Trinity), sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn’t. This is the latter case. It certainly suffers from “itcanbedoneamigo” syndrome. The opening scene is great than it slowly transforms into this tedious telenovelish melodrama and picks up some tempo in the end. The final duel is superb, as if Baldi made the effort once again, the sparse gunplay inbetween is mostly directed pretty sloppy for my taste. I prefer other Leonard Mann’s westerns to this: Vengeance Trail and Unholy Four. 5/10

12. One Damned Day at Dawn … Django meets Sartana (1970)

PNG

My second Fidani this Spagvember. As the Wild East currently sells for $79.95, I thought I was going to watch it in Italian. Then I found an 82 min English audio version on the Sartana The Complete Saga box that I had forgotten about. Good thing I didn’t throw that away. A Lallo Gori score, some nice camera work and a couple of good scenes - for me - keeps this one above the middle mark.

SPAGVEMBERFEST 2019: DAY 12
I’m watching Blood For a Silver Dollar (Ferroni, 1965) today and it could go either way. On the one hand it’s a fairly well received picture, without exactly blowing anyone’s minds. On the other hand, I’ve only had it on for five minutes and some gingham-clad love interest has wailed “Gyaaary! GYAAAAAAAARY!” way too many times for my liking already. Hm.

  1. Te Deum (Castellari)
About 70 % of the movie is quite alright demented crazy comedy spagh, but then comes the finale, which takes place in a spa. The whole segment is a prolonged mass water brawl and one has to see it on his/her own eyes to believe that something like this can happen. Endurance test in its purest sense. Was even Castellari on the set or they just let Jack Palance, Lionel Stander, Eduardo Fajardo and others improvise? No rating. I refuse.

Italians in the 70’s: “Those saloon fights are so outdated! Spa on the other hand, that’s something new, so innovative.”

And preceded by a fight in a saleroom. They were certainly trying hard.

Find a Place to Die (Carnimeo / 1968)

image

Hadn’t watched my old VCI release of this in many years so it seemed to fit this year’s Spagvemberfest theme for me. I remembered this film quite fondly and found I do still like it although it is not without it’s flaws. The Mexican banit of Chato is bigged up as being some nightmarish figure but when he arrives he’s just an ordinary crook with bad hair who gets polished off in no time. The VCI release is not very good either; with picture quality pretty bad when watched on a relatively modern telly.

A bit slow in places. A bit uneven in places. But overall a pretty decent mid tier Spag and well worth a better release.

Kill Them All and Come Back Alone (Castellari / 1968)

Another Wild East revisit and this time it’s non-stop Crash, Bang, Kablooey!
I checked back over my old review here and my feelings still pretty much stand.

It’s still better than Enzo’s next western, ‘Onion Colt’ ! though they’re both torturous

I have to say, I prefer Onion Colt. It just doesn’t have that spa scene in. Other than that, comedy wise it is probably on the same level, but with better soundtrack, amazing locations (oil towers), bikers and neat soundtrack - the finale with the accompanied music is just so better than that spa crap in Te Deum.

In case some of you would want to pass on this gem, I rather give you a taste of what you would miss - Jack Palance overpowering two baddies by forcing them to suck his “titties”.

13. Reach You Bastard! (1971)

reach%20you%20bastard

This Spagvember I set out to watch only films I haven’t seen before. And I haven’t seen this FILM before. But I’ve seen most of the stuff in it, as it is recycled from other films (ahead of his time, this Fidani guy). A couple of duels are new though, and the last shootout, I think? And a new fistfight between Benito Pacifico and … Benito Pacifico! Yes, Benito plays a double role as Paco and Manuel Sanchez, even in a fistfight between the two brothers!

Spent a dreary afternoon watching the action packed Anthony Steffen Western W Django

A simple story told at a brisk pace that takes viewers from one set piece to another. I had a very nice time with it.
