Scalps (Bruno Mattei, Claudio Fragasso, 1986)

But Soldier Blue doesn’t have a Rambo ripoff!

Watched this piece of redsploitation tonight. I’m not sure if it was me, or the film, but I just had a hard time paying attention for some reason. Some good scenes and of course more gore than pretty much any spaghet, but I expected more from Mattei & Fragasso in terms of continuous watchability. It wasn’t totally bad though, and I can imagine that I’ll enjoy it much more on some future viewing. I must admit the action scenes were nicely executed and the highlights of the film. It just took a bit too long to get to them.

When I first watched this film, I couldn’t help but laugh at how much of the script was lifted from Soldier Blue. Everyone should watch Soldier Blue and Scalps back to back. It’s hilarious! Mattei also used some of the audio from Soldier Blue and A Man Called Horse in both Apache Kid and Scalps.

The Suevia DVD is excellent quality. One of the things I do admire about Scalps and Apache Kid is that they managed to make them look like 1970s films. The film stock used looked straight out of the 60s-70s. I really wish filmmakers would still use that 60s/70s look for western films today. I can’t get into westerns shot on digital at all.

Yes you sum things up re the film stock. When I first viewed Scalps thought it was a mistake the film had been filmed in the 80’s.

Once again thanks to @Pumaman I am finally seeing this one (just like Bianco Apache, on the French BluRays).

I have to say I thought this wasn’t half as bad as expected. It’s certainly a bit more old schooley spaghetti westernish than the other in atmosphere, and a bit sleazier by a mile or two. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still not the greatest movie, but it has some merit. Mapi Galan (who runs a yoga retreat on Ibiza today) adds some eye candy (and gets to be a John Rambo style badass, too) to this at times rather rowdy flick that is sleazy in dialogue, violence and chauvinism… it was probably made more for the video store audience in mind. Having said that, the movie knows how to play with the genre, from stolen soundtrack bits to our familiar locations, quite decent camerawork and a typical storyline. Call it a down and dirty midnight type flick that hasn’t aged too well. With expectations adjusted, it’s a fair effort. And it has certain parallels to Hannie Caulder I think, too. The French BluRay is pretty solid. In sum, a way better experience than expected.

Just watched. Was better than I thought it would be. A lot of reused music though. the two leads are good, and its better produced than I had imagined.

definitely get those vibes.

Right? I don’t get the hate, to be honest. And it’s not nearly as sleazy as I thought, based on its Reputation

It’s been years since I watched it so I can’t honestly remember what it was I disliked, but I definitely remember thinking it was awful.

Updated this movie’s page to the new layout. Most of all we need better, high quality posters for this. Can someone help? Let us know if other items need correcting or if you can supply reviews, links, facts, info and reviews.

The HD versions have invasive color correction and remove the blue filter. Night scenes now day scenes. Happens all the time… doesn’t anyone watch the movie to double check?
