Return of Sabata / È tornato Sabata … hai chiuso un’altra volta! (Gianfranco Parolini, 1971)

I gave it two stars , only for the presence of LVC.

It’s not a patch on the first movie.

Ha ha. Good point. This could well explain where all the money went. Somewhere in the west there is a very rich wig maker!

So that’s were Connery went before he became double oo ever again

I think Joe, Monco and Blondie are three different characters
It’s not a real trilogy, the word dollar isn’t in the title of the third one and the feel of the three movies is quite different

May not be or could be…

I find the characters style and motivations similar though in all the films.

I’ve always agreed with this although I do believe Blondie acts just like Manco and Joe once he acquires the Poncho at the end. If this was a trilogy GBU would be a prequel.

Cigar Joe has a very interesting theory about the three seperate characters.
I tend to use this theory to try to explain to people that Eastwood is not the same character.

I like RETURN OF SABATA. The first time I viewed it I hated it. But repeated viewings will help you understand the plot a little more (which is usually the main complaint about the movie).
The opening scene is brilliant and is very Mario Bava esq. with the multi colored lighting and so forth.
Then the movie becomes plot heavy but there is still Van Cleef’s hammy performance to keep it running.
Towards the end we finally get some action (some of these scenes surpass the action in the first Sabata!) such as the confrontation with Mclintock’s men and the siege at his mansion.

I pretty much enjoy every sw that Parolini that i’ve seen ,apart from GODS GUN but last week i taped this in widescreen off tv so i’m gonna give this another try.I’m surprised by people who enjoy the first SABATA but dislike RETURN OF.Even if it is a bit messy styalistically its more of the same, has the same characters and LVC in arguably his best role outside of Leone.

Not a classic, but very enjoyable.

I read somewhere that in Fistful the character was a hired gun, in FAFDM a genuine bounty killer, and in GBU he was sort of a con man more than a bounty hunter or killer, which is quite true!

I think there is a better chance that Joe and Manco is the same guy. But Blondie is a different guy because the events of GBU take place about 15-20 years before FFD and FFDM, and Eastwood doesnt look any younger.

I admit that Sabata returns was pretty fun in spots, but overall it stinks. The sabata character himself seems to be a different guy, as he is much more talkative. ALot of people like the first scene with the circus show but I think it was awkward, and whats with the guy who uses a hacky sack as a weapon? haha

That stems from the made for tv prologue scene which was made during the film’s television airing in the 70’s (or was it 80’s?).
Joe doesn’t start off as a hired gun in the movie.

Some nice sceens but overall it was for me a dissapointment. I wished there would be more action scenes in that one. William Berger is missing and it isn’t as crazy (or funny) as it should be. Ok Lee is cool but isn’t he in every movie cool? At least he talks too much in Return of Sabata.
The first scene is pretty well made and also the final shootout. The photography is good and I didn’t had the feeling to see a B-Movie. In all three Sabata’s (or two Sabata’s and one Indio Black) I had the feeling Parolini had more Budget as usual.
I had to smile about the name of the villain McIntock. Reminded me on the John Wayne Movie McLintock! in which John Wayne is a rich cattle baron named McLintock.

I’m going to watch this one in the weekend. The first Sabata was a masterpiece and one of my absolute favourites, while Adios was nice but Yul Brunner didn’t seem to fit with the ‘spaghetti style’ of the western. With LvC on this one things will be great again, hopefully.

Don’t get your hopes up too high amigo. I love the original Sabata too but this one really didn’t match up in my opinion. Hope you like it better than I did.

You will have the lovely pleasure of LVC sporting a super 70’s rug :D.

An added bonus indeed

By rereading this thread it seems I’m the only one who likes this film, the only one who says this film is as good as the 1st Sabata.

The strong disliking of Sabata Returns is still one of the great mysteries in SW judging. It’s impossible for me to see why this film should be considered as much weaker than the other 2 Sabata’s. Not similar good ok, but inferior???
Reminds me that even the God’s Gun catastrophe got some favourable mentions.

Shit, what’s wrong with me? :’( :o :-\ 8)

I saw this in cinema when first released, a few centuries go, when men had rugs, women had tails and dinosaurs weren’t born yet

I never saw the thing again and wonder if it’s really as bad as I remember
I still know how desillusioned I was when leaving the theatre, I just couldn’t understand how a Lee van Cleef movie could be this dull

So ION: if you still watch it after all this, let me know what you make of it

I wonder how SD feels about this film

Surely a cult classic loved by milli… , well, many.
SD judges any film only by their actors. With LvC it can’t fail.

Hehe, after all these i may watch it even tonight! I’m very curious about it, damn i want to see more new killer gimmicks in Sabata’s arsenal

Don’t expect too much. The other two Sabatas (or one Sabata and one Indio Black) Movies are much better. The beginning and the final shootout are the best scenes of Sabata Returns. Between ::slight_smile: ::slight_smile: ::slight_smile: ::slight_smile:
The Gimmicks in the Sartana Movies are also more fun than in this one.
