Red Blood, Yellow Gold / Professionisti per un massacro (Nando Cicero, 1967)

The recently identified Bruno Ukmar in one of his few credited roles in a western. He has a nice part as Gerard Herter’s sidekick, Sergeant Brent, here a little later in the movie than the previous pic.

It’s not a great film, but the photography is lush and beautiful.

Just watched this one for the second time and enjoyed it. 3/5 from me

I must say that I think this is one of the better spags in the The Dirty Dozen-fashion. 3/5 from me as well.

Just watched this SW for the first time - somehow I missed it or it was not available to purchase. It is on YouTube.
Anyway, it was enjoyable, even if it is not a top SW. Good cast and nice locations in rambla lanujar.

I remember not really enjoying it. Maybe I’ll have to give it another shot sometime.

Never seen this one but I’ve had it on my to-watch list for a while. Should give it a go if it’s on YouTube.

This was one of the first 30 or so SW’s I watched…I believe under the title “Payment in Blood”… this was about ten years ago but remembering the movie didn’t live up to the title. Never really cared to give it another go for some reason but probably should revisit.

Payment in Blood is a different film, directed by Enzo Castellari and much better than this, imo.

Oh wow, you’re right! I think I saw this film too though, need to rewatch both now

Just came to me why I got them confused, they were a double bill on the Wild East DVD. Didn’t care for either really so sold the DVD. Still would like to rewatch both but got other more important ones to rewatch first.

Rewatching it involuntarily, and I have to say, it does have its qualities but overall it’s just boring as hell. Half way through I have to force myself not to do chores or take a nap… and when I hope it’s over, its still 30min to go… can’t help but find the movie extremely tedious

Yes … unfortunately it looks good, here and there, but all that competitive testosterone is exhausting to watch … George Hilton’s face must have been sore after every take, he forces that fake smile in every shot !

I just did the same thing the other day. Completely agree.

Just watched this - the German Explosive Media/Plaion Blu Ray. The print was a Spanish one with Spanish opening and closing credits. Italian opening credits available as an extra - these had extra cast members and existing cast members in different order. Running time about 92m30s (our cover page states this runs 91m).

I rated it ‘2’ which seems to be the consensus as I thought it was a bit of a narrative mess. Not as good as Any Gun Can Play. It looked to be as if it had been heavily censored but when I checked out the Italian censor site it seemed that hardly anything had been cut so all of the holes must be the producer’s. I thought the whole thing got bogged down when they got to the Mexican town with lots of padding.

  • George Martin’s haircut and ‘browned’ appearance
  • Martin has a fight with a henchman who strips to his waist specifically for this purpose so a long build-up but the editor cuts away from this fight soon after it starts and the next time we see Martin the opponent is dead over his horse. What was that about?
  • A purposeless subplot involving Primero and one of Lloyd’s henchman whom he captures and keeps taunting but the man refuses to talk and is buried up to his neck in the sand whereupon Primero gets bored and throws a knife at him (but when we see the last shot of the victim there is no knife in his head!). About 5m of this timewasting.
  • That scene in which Primero kills the ugly guy in the big pot was weird. Presumably he had known him for years but just shot him on a whim. We don’t see the man’s wife afterwards. I thought this sequence was timewasting as well.
  • The woman character appears and then disappears from the film about 10m later and isn’t seen again. I didn’t know where she had gone until the Lt explained it at the end. Why didn’t they tell her from the start that they hadn’t killed her family? That would have saved her messing up their trap for Lloyd.
What happened to ‘Mama’? Was she supposed to have been killed in the fire or what?
Likewise, the camera kept cutting away from the violence. not for example, showing the corpses after some of the explosions. No sight of Primero’s corpse for example.
  • A real bad cut at the end when our heroes drive off the wagon with the gold. The Confederates have vanished when we see the long shot although in the previous shot they still hadn’t received their weapons from the Mexicans.
