Well I remember having read that Michael Beck said that “Warriors” (Walther Hill, 1979) opened a lot of dors for him, but that “Xanadu” (Robert Greenwald, 1980) closed them again.
Watched this one a couple of days ago. The year is 2024. WW IV is just over. The film focuses on an idiot who can communicate telepathically with a dog. The dog is way smarter than he is. Anyway, he needs the dog to find chicks and the dog needs him to find food. I won’t spoil the rest, see for yourselves. But it’s oddball enough to come recommended.

Well, it’s been far too long since I’ve visited this site but here I am now! So, I see that the “high-brow” PA fans have arrived, recommending things like The Time Machine, Planet of the Apes, etc. What are they talking about?! It’s all about the crappy, trashy, fun PA movies, don’t you know?!
I kid, I know. I like 'em all, really.
Anyway, thanks for the link, Lindberg.
Anyone going to check out “Doomsday” when it comes out later this month? Looks pretty fun to me…

I was just kidding, I like 'em all! Time Machine and Planet of the Apes are both great. I suppose it’s just that I don’t think of them right off when I think of PA cinema…

Doomsday is Neil (“Dog Soldiers,” “The Descent”) Marshall’s new film. It looks like a crazy mix of “Escape from New York,” “Mad Max” and “28 Days Later.” The idea is that Ireland (I think) has been sealed off (much like New York in Carpenter’s film) after a virus has destoryed it. Now, years later, the authorities believe that a cure for the virus is somewhere inside the country, so Rona Mitra (“The Practice,” “Boston Legal,” “Nip/Tuck,” etc) leads a small military group into the country to find the cure. They find many Mad Max/Escape from New York-type gangs and much violence ensues.
Looks fairly neat…
Happy to hear that Flynn!
I also had difficulty recollecting many of the 1980s/1990s PA Films as I am a 1960s/1970s fan.
But I got there in the end and many 1980s PA Films like STRYKER 83/CYBORG 89 I enjoy also.
YVETTE MIMIEUX :-* :-* Star Of THE TIME MACHINE 1960
Thanks for the picture, SD!
I will have MORE YVETTE MIMIEUX Lovely Photos and PA Photos soon I Hope. ![]()
Reporting back on Doomsday. The verdict: incredibly entertaining. VERY much a tribute to Escape from New York and the Mad Max films. Hell, even the font of the titles is the same font that Carpenter used in Escape. I say, if you like PA films (especially the trashier ones), check this out. You’ll probably like it.

Thanks for the info
Sounds like it might be worth checking out then. Originally i was a bit wary after reading your earlier post as i’ve seen Dog Soldiers and Descent and have to say i didn’t like either. The comment about this one being more like the trashier PA’s does make it seem quite promising though
Yeah, it’s quite gory and very, very over-the-top. Lots of great character actors in supporting roles as well (Bob Hoskins, Alexander Siddig, Adrian Lester, etc, etc.)
Thanks for the positive response. I plan on seeing it soon.
You’re welcome! It’s a fun movie. There seems to be a fair amount of negativity on the 'net about the film, mostly centered around how it’s not “realistic.” This puzzles me, as the film never presents itself as a realistic film to begin with. On the contrary, it’s gleefully over-the-top (buckets of blood, heads flying, people being cooked alive and eaten, quite a lot of exploding cars in the chase scene, etc, etc.) How anyone would think that this film is supposed to present what could actually happen in “the real world” is beyond me. Work yourself up into an early 80s trashy PA mindset, turn off the higher fuctions of your brain, sit back in your chair and enjoy…
That actually cracks me up - thinking this movie would be realistic? that’s great. They must be the same people who thought the Dawn of the Dead remake was more realistic than the original.
Yes! You’re probably right. Another thing that seems to be getting some people all up in arms is the fact that Doomsday has a woman (the delightful yet brooding Rhona Mitra) in the “Snake Pliscan” type role. Some people just can’t accept this…
Just watched Castellari’s “The new barbarians”. Not a good movie, but wachable and never loses its pace. The bad news is it has got Giovanni Frezza
But you must admit, he’s not as annoying in this as he is in THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY. ![]()
He was annoying in this one as well. Did they think that making him a mechanic and let him fight alongside Giancarlo Prete and Fred Williamson in the final fight is a good idea. I was hoping someone would kill him ![]()
Forgot to mention that this movie contains one of the strangest scenes ever - Giancarlo Prete gets butt-raped by George Eastman! The strange editing in this scene and electronic score makes it even stranger. Has to be seen to be believed
