While i definitely think the 70's was the last truly great decade, there have been plenty of great films since then. It's hard to see the forest for the trees with current films, but i'm certain it has always been this way with both movies and music. We all have our favorite periods, but we are not subjected to all the crap from these 'golden ages' as we are in current times. The cream from the past rises to the top and the rest is easily forgotten.
As far as what current films will reach 'classic' status, a critic friend of mine is constantly saying that it is impossible to say what films will stand the test of time, and i tend to agree with him, though it is fun to speculate.
Wasn’t this made in 1994? Anyhow, it’s already reguarded as a classic.
The eighties spelt the begining of the “modern” period (i. e. the cinema hasn’t really changed since then). While some good movies came out, like “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, “Back to the Future” and “Chariots of Fire”, most of them were released at the begining of the eighties. on the whole, most of them have now become very dated. I agree with Spaghetti Monkey that the seventies were the last great decade, and, as I said in an earlier post, bad movies have always been made (“Plan 9 from outer Space” was made in the fifties!), but the good ones were just so much better than the okayish ones released today.
Yes and Yes.
I agree the 70’s still had some great period pieces but you have to remember that horror in the 70’s had already shifted to contemporary settings with the success of the Exorcist. That was the final nail for Hammer films but there was very little gothic horror after 1973. The 70s also saw the advent of the summer blockbuster (Jaws, Star Wars) while the 60’s did see the dawn of the franchise (Planet of the Apes). The 80’s went for more product than previous decades it seems - almost all the horror was a franchise in that decade - even the comedies went that way as well - Revenge of the Nerds.
Yes, I see what you mean. The seeds were set, but it took till the eighties to grow into a tree.
Shiver!
yep… the 80s was all about greed (like in Wall Street) and the movie industry was no different.
I love movies from every decade from the 20’s until the current. I can find something enjoyable in a lot of different genres and styles. Hell I even love Revenge of the Nerds (first one only).
Yes, I can too. It is just that in the past few years the number of modern movies I have seen that I really enjoyed is getting smaller and smaller.
it is bound to happen - I am the same way - I like/love maybe 4-6 movies a year now but I also don’t see a ton of current movies anymore - the rising cost of the cinema ($10+ per ticket), the lack of time to get to the cinema, and the lack of quality (Catwoman, Battlefield Earth, or Gothika anyone?) makes it harder to spend 2 hours in a cinema with jerky kids and people on cell phones.
I remember seeing a trailer for this in the cinema - that alone deserved a Razzie.
same here - I am not a Berry fan so it looked doubly awful to me.
OK she looks quite nice, but so what?! Pretty looks don’t count. Otherwise some playboy movies could be listed here as the future classics.
agreed and I don’t find her that attractive either.
Don’t say that to my brother, Frank! She’s his absolute dreamgirl no.1!
to each his own. I can see why guys love her - I don’t see anything hot about her…
I think, you love her as well, but I suspect your wife is sitting behind you ;D
haha… no she’s at work. I find Berry’s antics annoying - she’s a bit of a whacko and that’s annoying to me.
Hmm… that’s a bit nebulous.
I bet your wife reads all of your posts!
nah she has better things to do than read my posts here. ![]()
She reads the posts in the other forum.
