Kung Fu-films

Do you have a scan of the cover? The Chinese disc bears the original title of HEROES OF THE EAST. Celestial Pictures only handled the restorations, while IVL handled the DVD releases. I have both the hong kong IVL disc and the US dragon dynasty disc from the Weinsteins. The Hong Kong disc has only english subtitles while the legit US release has both dub and sub. The SHAOLIN CHALLENGES NINJA title was a made up name applied to the old Vista VHS tape that was available here in the US back in the late 80ā€™s. The title was released theatrically as CHALLENGE OF THE NINJA internationally. Nobody dies in the movie. Liu Chia Liang directed a lot of movies where nobody died in them. There are bootlegs a plenty of Shaw releases from Red Sun/Panmedia. The few Iā€™ve seen have the absolute worst syncing jobs. The guy didnā€™t even care and apparently, the ā€œfansā€ didnā€™t care either as they swarmed on those crappy duped discs.

Actually youā€™re correct - it is titled Heroes of the East. It is the HK version.

oh, okay. Thanks, Talby. Still, the recent US disc has the untampered audio. Some of the HK discs had newly redone audio to make the films seem more ā€œnewā€ and give people with 5.1 systems a reason to have them. The tampering is similar to what happened with the Leone movies a few years back, only here, itā€™s worse.

Talby, have you seen Liuā€™s first role in Chang Chehā€™s classic, SHAOLIN MARTIAL ARTS (1974)? Great film, great fights, great drama. Itā€™s one of my all time favorites.

Is Shaolin Martial Arts known by another title? I probably have it.

I live in the States as well. I have a sizable collection of the IVL releases. Man theyā€™re solid. So glad the owner of Celestial is an American or Brit (forget which) as he had the English Subs on all the releases.

My collection is focused around Gordon Liu, Ti Lung/David Chiang, and the Venoms. I have a few others but I concentrated on those three primarily.

I got a little over 400 of them including various other releases around the world. SHAOLIN MARTIAL ARTS is only known under that title apart from its Chinese translated title, HUNG FIST & WING CHUN. It stars Alexander Fu Sheng and Chi Kuan Chun. Fu Sheng was one of the most popular HK stars till his death in a car wreck in 1983. You probably know of him Iā€™m sure considering your mention of the other actors above.

I donā€™t think I have Shaolin Martial Arts and yes I certainly know of Fu Sheng. I am not a huge fan of him but he has been in some of my favorite kung fu movies including his Shaolin Temple and his last Invincible Pole Fighter aka 8 Diagram Pole Fighter.

Interestingly, both this and WITS OF THE BRATS (which Fu was a co-director) were in production as early as 1981. His best movie is without doubt, DISCIPLES OF SHAOLIN. Itā€™s a remake of Chang Chehā€™s own blockbuster THE BOXER FROM SHANTUNG (1972). DISCIPLES became a massive success, too, surpassing BOXER which made Chen Kuan Tai a star overnight.

Have you seen the Ti Lung wuxia film Clans of Intrigue? My first time seeing it was at a filmfest in NYC about 5 years ago. I wasnā€™t supposed to see it either but glad I did. It is one of my favorite off the wall movies.

Yes, I have it. The sequel is much better, IMO. The name of the sequel is LEGEND OF THE BAT. Did the version you saw in NYC have the lesbian scene cut from the DVD release? The bootleg DVD also has the scene present.

I think my favorite Ti Lung wuxia is SWORDSMAN & THE ENCHANTRESS.

Other Shaw wuxia he did that I like are MAGIC BLADE and THE SENTIMENTAL SWORDSMAN series. MAGIC BLADE had a sequel, tooā€“PURSUIT OF VENGEANCE. His character also turns up in a cameo in DEATH DUEL.

I got stacks of original posters, lobby sets, B/W still sets, promotional magazines from the 70ā€™s and 80ā€™s for the Shaw flicks. Hereā€™s some postersā€¦

Chinese food is also nice

Iā€™m not good with photoshop programs so this is the best I could do with melding the image from two parts as my scanner is smaller than the lobby sets I have. I have the complete set of this one, one of the most anticipated releases, but sadly, it didnā€™t get released on dvd by IVL. This one is called TO KILL A MASTERMIND (1979)ā€¦

I think outside the real Chinese food, my favorite dish is Steak Kai Kew. ;D

sweet postersā€¦

I have three Shaw posters hanging up - sorry no photos

Damn, FIVE ELEMENT NINJAS is my all time favorite shaw brothers movie. I can quote the dubbed version from start to finish. Seen it an embarrassing number of times. Is it the HK original or the US release poster? I had a chance to buy the US one but passed on it as I only like the HK originals.

I saw the dubbed US version once and I own the HK releaseā€¦

and Kid with the Golden Arm is one of my favorite chop socky moviesā€¦ I waited a long time for the HK release of it.

This is a great gore horror wuxia action exploitation flickā€¦

the biggest Shaw production ever, THE 14 AMAZONSā€¦

This is a nifty wuxia starring Ti Lung and Lo Mang. I have both the HK and thai posters. This is the thai versionā€¦
