Italian Crime Films

I know my Blu Ray player won’t recognize PAL but my DVD players (which are cheaper and decidedly generic) don’t seem to have any problems, thankfully.

Watched Faster last night, not only was it a really good film it uses “Goodbye My Friend” from Street Law during the opening credits.

Watched The Italian Connection and i liked it. Good action film, Mario Adorf is really good in this, also the rest of the cast does a great job. 6/10

Is Convoy Busters any good? Anyone seen it?

Yeah I liked it, its very slow paced though.

I’ll skip it for the time being then!. Thanks!

What ones have you seen so far Chameleon?

So far i’ve seen Contraband, and from the Di Leo collection The Italian Connection, both great films. Got to find time to watch the rest of Di Leo’s collection, and hopefully soon :-\

Both good films!

And what about Revolver? It was good in your opinion?
I found soundtrack stunning, “Un ami” song is simply great, probably my favorite song ever.
And good cast…
I’d like to buy it but I don’t know if it’s good.

I think there’s quite mixed opinions about Revolver. I like it myself but it doesn’t have as much action as most film in the genre. Soundtrack is one of my favorites and Oliver Reed is awesome in the lead role.

That’s alright for me. I don’t need action to be entertained. Thanks for your opinions, I’ll buy this one then.

Agreed, I prefer atmosphere.

Manhunt in the City.

Henry Silva’s daughter is killed by some punks, so he decides to take care of things himself. Not as much action as other Lenzi crime films from the period, but still a top notch crime film in my view. Silva is great in this part which he is allowed to show a bit more depth than usual.

Ahh! Finally found time to watch two more DiLeo crime films.

CALIBER-9, Not what I expected, there was more talk than action to my liking, it started good then it bogged down some. Mario A. a crazy bastard here, imo was over the top and annoying with is performace. Gastone is good as the small-time gansgter and the rest of the cast is ok. I must admit, i did fall asleep a little in the middle, will have to rewatch it again to fully grasp the twisted plot. ???

THE BOSS Excellent crime film! This is more of my cup of tea, Henry Silva is great in this, great beginning with a bomb attack in the cinema, lots af action, double crosses, nudity etc. just the way i like it. This has become my favorite euro-crime film so far. Great stuff! 9/10

I must have watched over 30 or so eurocrime or polzioteschi movies and still have a few unwatched. these are my top 10 so far in NO particular order.

  1. Violent Rome - The first Maurizio Merli movie and the first in the Comissioner betti series, great storyline and excellent supporting roles by Ray Lovelock and Richard Conte, available on a German DVD, with english dub.

  2. Violent Naples - 2nd and probably best in the Comissioner Betti films, superb action throughout, brutal, bloody and relentless, co-starring John Saxon, great direction by Umberto lenzi and classic Franco Micalizzi score too! Alpha digital copy is a decent print, with english dub track (John Saxon dubs his own voice on the english track) seek it out if you can still get it, also available on pop flix 5 movies on 2 discs set “Mafia Kingpin” collection.

  3. A Special cop in action - 3rd and final movie in the Betti series, not as good as the first 2 movies but still great, has the best car chase of the series and Franco Micalizzi’s score here is amazing!! later re-usd by Tarantino in Death proof, sadly unavailable on official DVD but there are good DVD-R copies you can get from places online.

  4. Rome armed to the teeth - 1st and best in a 2 film series with Maurizio Merli playing Inspector Tanzi this time though is basically the same character as Betti!, Directed by Umberto Lenzi, this along with Violent Naples is the best movie they made together, Tomas Milian does a great turn here and steals the show as “The Hunchback” a character he would later play again in Lenzi’s “La Banda Del Gobbo” Another brutal and action packed movie and of course another top notch Franco Micalizzi score. Alpha digitals release is decent.

  5. The Cynic the rat and the fist - 2nd and final movie for Merli in the Tanzi series, not as good as RATTT but decent nonetheless, not as action packed or brutal either but has probably the better storyline, again Directed by umberto lenzi, Micalizzi’s score here is decent but far from his best. Alpha Digital release is good but does have occasional audio dropout, will do for now.

  6. Street Law - Enzo G Castelarri’s best eurocrime movie, great performance by Franco Nero, again, very brutal and violent. Some have called this a Death Wish rip off, though it does share certain similarities it’s actually a very different movie to that. Blu Undergrounds release has excellent transfer and english dub ( Nero as usual dubs his own voice on the english track) along with interviews with Nero and Castelarri, TOP NOTCH!

  7. The Big Racket - Castelarri’s 2nd best Polizioteschi, Fabio Testi stars in this and is a brutal hard hitting movie from beginning to end, the rape scene in particular is very nasty, Blue Undergrounds release is again great with superb transfer and english dub, has a good Castelarri commentary too!

  8. Manhunt aka The Italian Connection - The 2nd in Fernando Dileo’s Mileau trilogy and my personal favourite, Henry Silva and Woody Strode will get most of the attention but it’s Mario Adorf who steals the show in an inspired performance! Raro video have now released this on Blu Ray and it looks great! both italian language and english dubs inc ( Both Silva and Strode dub their own voices on the english track) multiple extra feeatures make this a no brainer!

9 The Boss - 3rd and final film in Dileo’s Mileau trilogy, Henry Silva plays a hitman for the mob in this movie which has many twists and turns and some great action, co-stars eurocrime regular Richard Conte and one of the mafia bosses, Raro’s Blu Ray print looks great with the usual italian and english audio tracks ( Silva and Conte dub their own voices in the english track)

  1. Almost Human - Tomas Milians best performance by far! ( and his own personal favourite) as the ruthless criminal Guilio Sacchi who kidnaps a wealthy industrialists daughter for ransom, superb and stark direction from Umberto lenzi in his best turn behind the camera, Co-starring Ray Lovelock and Henry Silva as the cop on his trail, This was out on the No Shame label in the U.S with a great transfer and fantastic special features, still available but expensive to picK up, The Shamless label in the UK released this last year with the same print and audio but minus some of the features, the UK release though does have better box art.

Just falling outside the top 10 are - “The Violent Professionals” Sergio Martino’s classic starring Luc merenda and Richard Conte, some of the car chase footage here would go on to be re-used partially in 2 later films! The only release in the UK or US for this ( that i know of) is the UK Vipco release which has since not gone out of business, though you can still pick copies up sometimes. It has a decent non anamorphic widescreen print but no extra’s.

“Free hand for a tough cop” aka il trucido el sbriro - Tomas Milian plays Monezza a character he would play in 3 movies altogther and helps Claudio Casanelli’s inspector track a gang of criminals headed by Henry Silva! Another good Umberto lenzi helmed effort with some funny exchanges and great action sequences, also blostred by a great funky Bruno Canfora score - Not available on Ofiicial DVD in the UK/US but is out on DVD in Italy but has no English subs or audio, DVDR’s of the movie can be found online in good prints with english dub.
