Italian Crime Films

What’s the running time on the Koch disc, Dorado?

I don’t have the Koch disc, the reason being the lack of english options.
I have it on the 23rd century label.

According to amazon.de the running time is 101 min.

That’s the length of the US version, it’s a boot of the VHS release.

Like any good Danish schoolboy you of course had German classes, Dorado, so the Italian dub and German subtitles should be no problem

Like Dorado, says its 101 mins. Check the full confirmed specs here:

www.ofdb.de is the site of choice when talking of German dvd (and vhs) releases. And also foreign for that matter.

This is my favourite Italian crime movie so far by the way. It’s more subtle than the Merli-ones but the atmosphere is through the roof !!

Franco Nero and Martin Balsam give super performances in this great crime film from Damiani involving corruption in Italy circa 1970’s. Well worth seeking out.
Thats one of the big ones I still need to see…

My top 10 at the moment would be

Milano Calibre 9
The Cynic the Rat and the Fist
Munhunt
Violent Naples
Rome Armed to the Teeth
Ricco the Mean Machine
The New Godfathers
The Last Round
Violent Rome
Day of the Cobra
The New Godfathers
I thought this was quite awful. I liked even Brescia’s Bloody Avenger more.

I only had german for two years in school and that is 23-24 years ago now so I’m affraid my german isn’t worth much.

I just watched “Live like a cop, die like a man” from Ruggero Deodato.

Its one of the more violent films in the genre with a lot of explicit violent and blood. With a better plot it might have been one of the best films in the genre.
But compared agains the best films in the genre its to superficial.
Overall Its a good film though and definitely a must buy for genre fans.

By the way the cover on the Raro Video disc says that the film is in 1.33:1 ratio (fullscreen)
Thankfully this is wrong its actually in widescreen, its looks something like 1.66:1 or 1.78:1 to me.
I just watched “Live like a cop, die like a man” from Ruggero Deodato.
Yeah, one of my favorites. The motorbike chase in the beginning is stunning. I like the way Deodato uses Lovelock’s music in this film.

Agreed the music by Lovelock in this film is great.

I wonder if the soundtrack can be bought somewhere?

Link to the them song by Ray Lovelock.

I really liked detail that went into New Godfathers, it has a realistic feel to it. And the very Italian score was pretty epic (apart from that song that plays during the final car chase). The 3 leading men were great as well I thought.

This movie is so incredibly gay, it’s hilarious. Two cops living together, hahaha. Sharing women, sharing a bike. Definitely a fun movie, but not one to take seriously.

Turkish crime films that are in the spirit of the Italian style.

Kaplanlar/The Tigers - an over the top ultra violent crime film with Cunyet Arkin. The dispatching of humanity is an art form to the brutal characters of this film.
The film is from ‘85 but has the appearance of a 70’s film.
Idamlik/The Hanging Man - another Cunyet Arkin film that is a solid crime film with
large doses of violence.Directed by the legendary director Cetin Inanc who has some
1st class crime films to his credit. Kaplanlar,Destan,Kelepce are a few.
Yalan/The Lie from the 70’s.A sleazy crime/giallo film with Erol Tas as the murdering, psycho. The opening credits show 2 names then it cuts to the film.Tas’ name isn’t one of them.Tas a murdering, psycho is on the loose with a detective on his trail.Tas assaults & murders the cops sister who is a portrayed as a pre-teen which sets the detective out for revenge.
If you have seen Cellat from Onar you will enjoy the above films. When Onar releases
Kadin Dusani/Woman Despiser(Hater) don’t miss this giallo ace.

I saw the Sergio Sollima film Revolver and wasnt too impressed compared to his Sw’s it seemed a bit misguided at times. Still it had some great scenes and a pretty good ending…

I’m a big Revolver fan - a film that gives no quarter. Duro as the Italians would say. Excellent performances from the leads as well.

Great concepts, just not so great execution alot…

Just viewed From Corleone to Brooklyn.

A cop is taking a witness from Italy to the U.S but things do not go smooth. Reminded me of The Gauntlet by Eastwood at times, and although not the best Lenzi crime film of the 70’s it is still not bad. Lacks a little pace at times when compared to some of the other Lenzi ones, but fans of Maurizio Merli will probably enjoy.

I thought this one was awesome. A nice departure from the usual Merli film. The story is nicely put together and the ambiguous ending hints at more trouble ahead. A good send off for Lenzi’s last crime flick.

I just saw Street Law. I liked it. I’ve read alot of reviews saying that this is a Death Wish clone but its actually a completely different movie from Death Wish. I thought Nero overracted a bit but overall I thought it was an excellent film, with good direction from the Man with bigger arms than Bronson, Castellari.

This is just the second Eurocrime film that I’ve seen.
