I Just Bought … (Non-SW Shopping Diary)

Never watched Torso, but I sure hope something’s left of Suzy’s torso after meeting the man with the saw. Brrrr …

The ABCs of Death (various directors, 2012). My further ravings on the movie HEREhttp://letterboxd.com/lastcaress1972/film/the-abcs-of-death/. Some real quality in there mixed in with some utter tripe unfit for broadcast. The good stuff’s really good though, and at £8 I thought why not?

Some Russian flicks:

The Ascent (1977)

October (1928)
Man with a Movie Camera (1929)

I decided to watch a Merenda movie, since I had some friends over for a nice get-together, so I bought A Man Called Magnum, and it arrived yesterday.

Same as the last time I saw it, awesomely great, with Merenda being super sly, with that wicked smirk, gunning down thugs.

Also, possibly one of the best chases involving a train since the French Connection.
I had the NoShame copy, so I tried with all my heart to listen to the English dub, but we all bust out laughing at the voices.
All in all a great little movie.

Two for a tenner out of Tesco? Lovely.

In the Horror Films thread, members are discussing living near filming locations, well I have one too that I endlessly like to tell people about: I live about a fifteen minute drive away from where Hot Fuzz was shot, the “Sandford” of the film being in reality Wells, the smallest city in England. I actually know a fair few people who were extras in the movie and can be spotted pretty easily.

Oh, bloody hell! ;D Living in “wonderful” Pitsea, Essex, I am NEVER going to have a tale like this or the others being mentioned in the Horror thread. My horrible grey urban agglomeration seems to be the furthest point in the universe from anything remotely interesting. On another forum (a football forum, no less) a thread started up about truly great takeaway restaurants, and it occurred to me that not only could I not put forward any of my local Chinese or Indian eateries (they all taste identical so I assumed none were outstanding) but that as a result, I doubt I’ve ever even had an outstanding takeaway meal. Everyone else was chipping in with these great sounding little independent places and I was thinking, “hm, there was that “Big Tasty” burger I ate in McDonald’s once, that was quite nice, can I post that?” Depressing.

As to the Hot Fuzz location: didn’t you want to get your face in there, John? A quick cameo as a “crusty juggler” or similar?

Alas, I wasn’t around during the actual shooting, but I do remember seeing the crew arriving and setting up etc, etc.

I’ve just got this Japanese masterpiece:

I recently won a Greek tape of the full uncut version (or so I’ve been told) of Angel’s leap, with Gordon Mitchell and Santa Berger.
Also managed to get some more Noshame titles, being Double game and Gambling City ;D.

New on DVD:

New on Blu-Ray (it’s not a new release, it’s just new to me):

And on blu-ray, replacing old DVDs:

There are some really good purchases there, and I can personally vouch for the fantastic quality of The Godfather Trilogy Blu-ray boxset; The Deer Hunter packaging looks superb, as Studio Canal releases so often are.

Christmas Vacation is always one I come back since seeing at the cinema.

I sorta like this one too, an entertaining, mindless comedy.

It’s one of my Christmas staples. Silly, but a firm part of the festivities, you know? Like the tree decorations or the gaudy Santa doll that does a little dance and sings Jingle Bells when we press his belt buckle. Christmas Vacation, Elf, The Muppet Christmas Carol and of course It’s a Wonderful Life. Those are mine. Mrs.caress insists on Miracle on 34th Street (the Richard Attenborough one) and Bad Santa. Each year we have to fit those six films into the Christmas Eve/Christmas Day/Boxing Day area.

Here in the States, Christmas Vacation is an almost universal holiday favorite. Everyone loves it, and its always on at Christmas time

When I viewed at the cinema upon its release there were screaming kids running around the cinema, whilst there parents were attempting to bring more children into the world. Not the best viewing experience that  , but still managed to like the film.

My Christmas movie’s are odd ones, though I love them for either their ideas, or characters, such as the case with Silent Night Deadly Night, and This Park Is Mine.
Other Christmas movies I usually see are The Muppet Christmas Carol, ever since I was 5 I loved this film, and the 1955 classic The Ladykillers.

New DVD:

Not exactly expecting the greatest movie ever here, but I’m led to understand that, despite the “2”, this is basically (almost) another remake of the 1985 camp classic rather than a sequel to the remake from 2011. No actual connection to the 2011 movie, just the same character names (NOT the same characters) and the same basic blueprint of a plot. Still, I’ve always been fond of the Fright Night franchise, and the vampire Gerri Dandridge (not “Jerry” anymore. No. “Gerri”) is this time round played by the unbelievably sexy Jaime Murray. A definite upgrade on Colin “Eyebrows” Farrell from the last film.

Never seen an episode of this. Blind purchase. I’m told it’s very good indeed and it certainly looks like something I might enjoy. So, we’ll see.

New Blu-Ray:

New Blu-Ray:

Wasn’t going to go for this until it dipped into a lower price bracket but, sod it. “Extended Action Cut” trumpets the box, maybe it’ll add some scenes that leave other scenes not sticking out as sorely as they were in the theatrical cut.
