I Just Bought … (Non-SW Shopping Diary)

This has always been one of my favourite ITC Cult TV series from yesteryear, so grabbing it now from ‘Amazon UK’, while it’s available.

Also:
A John Williams soundtrack that I’ve been missing for a while…

I’m a few months late in seeing your post. But I have to say, Deliverance is still one of the best book to film adaptations ever. I love how John Boorman shot long takes without constant cuts and close-ups during big dialogue sequences. I think it’s perfectly cast and acted.

If you like your comedy ‘Blacker than a gorilla’s goolies’ , I can strongly recommend this one - I’d seen it a couple of times before, but picked it up in a 4 for a £1 deal yesterday.

Go in blind as I did and you’ll be shocked and delighted  8/10

That is definitely an Albert Steptoe quote…referring - if I remember correctly - to home-made Christmas puddings (Christmas Special, 1973).

I knew you would appreciate the ‘Steptoe’ reference  I spent most of the holiday period going through the series - 60 years after, it’s still light years ahead of any of today’s comedy shows.

I’ve only ever been able to see a few episodes of this show but the ones I did see were just great. The U.S. remake, Sanford and Son with legendary comedian Redd Foxx, was a must watch when I was growing up. It was the highlight of my father’s television viewing for the week.

This side of ‘the pond’, love for the original version is so strong, that I’ve never sought out ‘Sanford and Son’ … but thanks to youtube, I may give it a go, but it will probably suffer by comparison. Maybe I’ll become a convert!

You might end up being disappointed. The remake of anything seldom lives up to the original.

That is true, but if I go in with low expectations it maybe enjoyable on it’s own level - The original series is one of those rare things in a comedy, where there’s real emotional content without being mawkish or preachy … plus the two actors are so exceptionally good, that they really ruined their careers by accidently typecasting themselves. So, there is a kind of life imitating art, aspect that heightens the drama and comedic elements more now than at the time of it’s initial broadcast. I know it’s a bit of a cliche, but ‘lightning in a bottle’ is the phrase that comes to mind when I think of this series.

Found this in a charity shop for a couple of pounds. I was working the day that it was on TV all those years ago, so a great opportunity now to travel back almost 40 years to that momentous day in 1985…

Three new pre-orders:

BH 1

One of my favorite John Wayne films, and his last, is surprisingly getting a LE release from Arrow.

Some new Hammer and some upgrades:

Some new South Korean cinema.

I found The Swordsman at a thrift store for 50 cents. Anyone craving some all out, unmitigated action, gore, and violence really needs to see The Villainess

And, finally, some more thrift store pick ups including an unexpected Giallo find. $5.00 for the lot.

Some excellent films there, LG. I’ve always liked ‘The Shootist’ - a poignant one for the ‘Duke’ to go out on; while ‘Hammer’ and ‘Universal’ horror are essential viewing… :+1:
