I Just Bought … (Non-SW Shopping Diary)

“I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass…and I am all out of bubblegum.”

-Roddy Piper They Live-

My favorite corny yet badass line in history.

It was weird when I saw They Live first time because this line was familiar to me but from Duke Nuke’em 3D game.

I have heard that it had its origins even prior to They Live. People have said that it came from some early 70s film though I have never found out what that film was.

Interesting, I thought that it was something Roddy Piper invented himself during his wrestling shows.

I think this film is the origins of that quote: “Five on the Black Hand Side”

Nice work, @Ulukai ! I was going to start a search later myself but you saved me the trouble.

Finally decided to pull the trigger on this one

Not sure if it’ll arrive by Halloween, but I’m happy to add this title to my Barbara Steele collection

Some new additions for Halloween:

While not officially part of Hammer’s so called “Karnstein Trilogy”, the Karnstein family is still included. I’ve never seen this one so I am looking forward to giving it a watch.

Another offering from Hammer, this one an upgrade.

The next one comes with a bit of an interesting story. I was in the airport in Las Vegas in 199? when the legendary Richard “Jaws” Kiel himself sat down next to me and began, much to my surprise, to carry on polite conversation. Soon, he was recognized by a passing John Karlen who joined us. While I never talked to him about this film, I did get to talk to him a bit about his time as Willie Loomis (and other characters) on the legendary Dark Shadows. The pair began swapping stories and we were soon surrounded by about twenty people who were all just content to listen to the actors swap tales. Eventually, I had to leave for my flight but they still had an enthralled crowd at the time I left.

(On this same trip I also saw 70 something or so 5’ 9" [allegedly] Tony Curtis who had a 20 something year old six foot tall model on his arm.)

Anyway, I saw this one years ago and thought it was time to give it a re-watch.

I also had to get some old Japanese horror.

And finally some cheap British sexploitation horror to complete my Halloween viewing.

I never really consider myself a horror fan, but I seem to have seen and enjoyed quite a lot of it … the first 3 films, I know you will enjoy … you may even be beguiled by Delphine Seyrig !

Some BDs I’ve just got from ‘CEX’, which I’m putting aside to watch as premieres at Christmas…

Plus: Believe it or not, I’ve never seen any of the ‘Fast and the Furious’ films, so I picked up the original (from 2001) for £1… just to take it out for test-drive…

I’ve just pre-ordered the latest Hercule Poirot film from ‘Amazon UK’, due out on 4th December…By all accounts, it’s a very good offering from actor/director, Kenneth Branagh…

Also, I’ve just bought some more BD premieres to watch at Christmas…

Lastly: I picked these up for a mere £0.99 each yesterday…

I like a good bargain! Well done.

BTW … I don’t think ‘Brimstone’ will give you much of a ‘Christmassy’ glow ! LOL

Perhaps not, amigo…but the festive glass of ‘Ruby Port’ that accompanies it certainly will!! :wine_glass:

Some more BD’s…

Plus: I’ve also updated my old ‘Cross of Iron’ BD, for a new 4k restored one, once again released by Studio Canal as part of their ‘Vintage Classics’ series.

The new release (pic above) has a far superior pic quality to the old one (see pic below); and this time has an audio commentary by Mike Siegel, plus hundreds of behind the scenes photos from the film. The colour palate is far more appealing to the eye, and detail has been significantly enhanced. The older ‘Studio Canal’ version had a yellowish tinge to it, which I was never very comfortable with.

This 1977 Sam Peckinpah film has certainly grown on me since I first bought it on Bluray, earlier this year. This new restored version looks great, sounds great, and has hours of supplements to savour…

One last thing I should add is how much I love the soundtrack, by Ernest Gold. It perfectly accompanies the action on screen, and epitomises the utter futility of war…

Watched Cross of Iron a few weeks ago for the first time with my friend who loves military history. We were both screaming with joy when Coburn mows down that Nazi with his PPSH.
