Go with God, Gringo / Vayas con Dios, gringo (Edoardo Mulargia, 1966)

Ok. The name of the title we have now been resolved.
But what about the film. Please keep a few opinions. ::slight_smile:

I think this is a pretty unknown film.

The least known are often the best.

This is an OK lower tier Spaghetti but nothing more in my opinion. Aldo Berti plays a nice baddie who is killed off far too soon but the rest of the film only exhibits the occasional moment of promise. Nowhere near one of Mulargia’s best for me.

It’s not great, but I like this one. And there’s a much better quality torrent at CG.

Took me a while to get to this movie (don’t know why), but finally watched it:

I re-watched this one lately, thanks to the new Tijuana version in pretty good picture quality.

I still think that the first 55 min are very good, very atmospheric and well directed. But then, after the Berti part is finished, the film does not really know hot to proceed further, how to bring the stagecoach-escapee story and the background story of the first scene together. The scene with the attack on the stagecoach is surprisingly silly and a not welcome shift in tone. After that Mulargia returns to the revenge part with an conventional ending which is not bad, but also far from the level of the first hour.

Mulargia had a natural talent for westerns, but I also got the notion that he wasn’t very interested in his films. He made them as they came. Vayas con dios would have benefited here and there from a bigger budget, but he main problem is that Mulargia most likely did not work enough to make it work. I still give it with some sympathy 7/10

Well, readers have two different opinions like this. Not a bad thing.

For me it’s only a 5/10. Some likable things in it though. I think Non aspettare Django, Spara worked a bit better.
Yes, this scene with the Mexicans attacking the stagecoach. you wonder what they were thinking of (the film makers that is)

I thought that whole scene on the hacienda was very strong.

You mean the scene with Carmen?

This is probably my second favourite from Mulargia.

Mine too.

I just watched Vaya Con Dios on Youtube with Spanish audio but I blaim the (idiotic) lockdowns there for not being in shape of understanding enough , in spite of having an apartment there (I am better at reading Spanish).

But this SW seemed rather good, especially some of the music by Felice Di Stefano who also composed the nice music in Ramon The Mexican. And in both films there is some good Spanish type music during a dance performance. The opening music is also very good even if it is a near Morricone “rip off”.
I will probably buy a DVD-R with English subtitles to learn more of the story details. I guess it could turn out to be a 6/10 rated SW (at least?) .

I think this is a lovely little gem of the genre. There’s some very cool scenes in it that feels 100% inspired, like in the beginning when the drunk is being shot over a stolen bottle of whiskey, very long and tense - a nod to Leone for sure!
