[Germany] Plaion Pictures (Koch Media - Koch Films)

I remember paying about £40 odd for my Arrow sets, so I can’t really argue with a tenner a film considering that’s the standard I always paid for a wild east dvd anyway. I do think they take the mick with some of these mediabooks and slipcover releases though. I do remember when you could buy cheap westerns at HMV.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what the next release will be from Plaion… hopefully something that’s never had a release.

With SWs it’s also very rare that they are released by the rights holders themselves (like major studios). So we have to rely on boutique labels that besides restoration work, printing, pressing, artwork, packaging, and possibly producing their own bonus material have to pay licence fees for everything on these discs.

I’m no expert, but licensing might even be the
biggest single factor in that calculation? Your Warmers, Universals, and Paramounts don’t have to pay that, and they usually sell their discs at €10-15 when they first come out, too.

That said, I don’t support the rip-off labels that charge €35 for a sloppy release of one film in artificially expensive packaging with a booklet full of Wikipedia texts. I buy those second hand as well, if at all.

And, most of these labels will have sales eventually. So, if you’re patient you rarely have to pay the full price.

Fingers crossed they give us a double dose of the Western all’Arrabiata series :crossed_fingers:

It happened, the first ALL’ARRABBIATA which is no longer available at the Plaion shop is Death Rides a Horse.

just in time for a new announcement later tonight  I’ll be on the live stream and summarizing the learnings here in the forums (chat ideally)

Nice! I will follow the stream but I don’t understand much of what they are saying.

that’s why I’ll do you the service and drop the important facts in the chat :))

So to summarize:

  • they mentioned some hiccups with their western series due to problems with masters (I don’t get why they just re-arrange and release one that’s ready to go, like just releaseing exactly what Eureka did with Run Man Run, no need to reinvent the wheel), which is the reason for delays (and I assume the reason no next title is confirmed here)

  • side note: they are continuing their US western series with Missouri (not news but still good to know)

  • they are now confirming Django 4K UltraHD BluRay, which was teased last time. Due out late this year as a 5 disc edition (five!) with tons of extras and quality never before available in Germany (I assume this also applies to restorations of the German audio). It will include the “Django and Django” documentary.

  • Plaion is doing their own 4K restoration of another spaghetti western not named here. And there’s work going on on another 4K restoration of a spaghetti western together with two other european labels.

Those square boxes with original artwork look very nice (except the FSK rating label).

They will probably become collectors items.

Are the 4K restorations gonna be used for 4K UHD releases or just regular blu?

Five discs? - Wow! I’m hoping Plaion does something similar with Django like what they did with Cemetery Without Crosses, mainly in including English subtitles for the Italian audio. I’m definitely intrigued with this announcement, but I’m also imagining the price tag they’ll put on it :exploding_head:

Here’s a little video I did ranking Plaion’s Western All’Arrabiata series so far, minus Django Shoots First and The Tramplers

Unfortunately the announcement yesterday was disappointing, Django in 4K was actually already known, surprisingly only the scope of the release on 5 discs, which of course will then also have its price. Unfortunately no new title in the Allarabiatta series was announced, a first release in this series would have been my favourite. What will the other two 4K SW be? I’m speculating on the two Dollar films :cowboy_hat_face:
Because they are well-known and will sell well.

That is a shame no new All’Arrabbiata title(s) announcements at the moment, but I guess we have to trust Plaion knows what it’s doing (even when the bigwigs sound thick-headed )

That said, I’m kind of dubious they’d go with Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More as every company and their stepmother’s grandmother has put them out on DVD, Blu-Ray, and now 4K; all they’d really be doing is oversaturating the market at that point. Even popular titles can lose their luster if you go overboard on releasing them.

I’m hoping Plaion has picked two that have only seen DVD releases previously.

well it’s really only KLSC in the US and Divisa in Spain that have put them out on 4K so far outside of Italy, and the last official releases in Germany are over 10 years old by now…
